True- but his first two games were exceptional, he gain two rising star nominations in his first two years... It looked like a master stroke!

He sucked me in- I thought we'd landed a star!

If you analyse lists and drafting it seems that only a few players each year can become regulars of their club. There simply is not enough room for more than 22 each week. Given that each club has a core of players who make up their side each week, the stronger clubs probably have less room for new players than the weaker clubs whose sides are clearly not as good and have more holes.

Therefore if a club like us drafts and trades in 8 new players in a year it would be reasonable to assume that only say half being 4 might become regulars at best. Therefore the other half or say 4 players could end up being judged as drafting or trading failures.

Logically therefore in every trading or drafting group there would have to be what many of us would describe as failures.

It might be more down to timing, injuries and other factors that also play a part in some players being seen as failures.

Good point, especially the one about injuries.

I know that we've bagged Prendergast mercilessly and some of his selections were hopeless but look at our early draft picks of 2008/9. Blease, Strauss and Trengove all had leg/foot fractures, Tapscott and Gysberts had problems getting right physically, Max had a second ACL and Fitzy was diagnosed a diabetic. On top of that, Scully had problems with a knee that hindered his second season before he was eventually stolen from under our noses by the AFL to serve as a (giggle, giggle) marketing tool for its new franchise in the Sydney wastelands.

Strangely enough, the AFL article really didn't go into this and I wonder how its dream team might have gone had it been afflicted by injuries and thrown into a losing culture where hard work wasn't a priority?

This bit is such cringworthy to read by BP..

"There was a bit of pressure with No.11 and expectation that we would go tall with that pick because it was seen as a pretty big need," he said. "Gysberts probably wasn't really rated that highly in the industry, and maybe a lot of people were surprised at the time.

"He didn't have a great under-18s carnival but when you looked at his skill set, I honestly believed that he has the potential to be the equal of Jack and Tom.

Then why the FK would you use pick 11 on him!? if he wasn't so highly rated then surely they could have waited till pick 18 or 2nd rounder aswell.!

That is just downright disgraceful and negligent in your duties and a cop out if you ask me. We were paying a guy and his only job was to be thorough in his search for talent! Can we sue him or what?

I wish :S But it was our fault that we hired him in the first place :S

FMD!! Why did I sit here and read this thread?

Boredom! Should be opening a nice bottle and spending it with your better half, if you have one?

i can appreciate why Denham and Pat Smith just got stuck right into the Demons when i read quotes like that.

BP should leave the country. Just go

Wasted all those picks. Followed up with Lucas Cook

I think we're being a bit hard on BP. According to this quote, he said, "I honestly believed that he has the potential to be the equal of Jack and Tom". As it turns out, he wasn't as far wrong as we thought. Scully hasn't set the world on fire and there was discussion about trading Trengove for pick 12 which is almost "equal" to pick 11.

Phantom drafts I've read didn't have Gysberts being drafted until the mid 20's. Unbelievable we took him at 11 when could've picked a half decent tall like Carlisle or Black. Sigh.....

Carlisle would have been a nightmare pick for our club.

If we got him it wouldve been terrible trying to post on threads such as "play him chf or chb.

Where will we play Dunn, tommy mac and garland .These conundrums would never cease if we got Carlisle.

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last
