You better hope like hell West Coast win that one, because Freo are no longer a direct threat to our chances of getting the number 1 pick.

If West Coast win we'll certainly finish last, even if we do beat them in Round 20.

eagles will lose. I think what they did against the saints is what they are capable of doing every week, there list hasn't had that much of a change and winning against the saints was a test to see where they are at.

I am all for Freo winning this one. Helps us secure a better pick in the second round, and I am all for that!!

WC will tank it. They are already a game and % ahead of us as it is. freo winning is a bigger plus for us than WC winning.

*sigh* I can't believe we're all cheering on a team to win so as we finish last. I mean really, it's quite depressing when you think about it.

Nonetheless, carn the Eagles!

Im all for the draft...but it is stupid that as soon as your team is out of finals contention you are torn between wanting wins and losses. There seems no real logical way to fix that though

solution = lottery system for bottom 4 clubs

Lottery for bottom 8 teams. Bottom team gets most chances of winning 1st pick, 9th placed team has least chance. Top 8 go in order of ladder position.

You have 5,000 or so balls in a machine, each ball with numbers 9-16, representing ladder position. 3,000 or so of the balls have the number 16, 1,000 have 15, 400 have 14 and you get less and less the higher up the ladder you get until 9.

And there will still be perceived to be tanking in order to get a higher number of balls.

It happens in the NBA. The Celtics were said to be tanking 2 years ago to position themselves the best chance at getting Greg Oden, instead they get pick 4( i think), pull off a couple of great trades and win the championship, and Oden goes to Portland and misses the season with an injury. So go figure.

Why do people want to finish last, id be happy with Watts or Naita, try and win, no one wants to be the shittest team.... do you?

Not just the no 1 pick at stake here, but the highest possible second round pick. If West Coast win, both Freo and WC would just need to win one each (they both have a realistic shot at winning one of their last four) to rule themselves out of a priority pick. We could be looking at 1, 17 and 18 if Freo and WC finish ahead of us on 5+ wins. That would be (draftwise) extremely advantageous to the Demons going forward.

i think the most advantageous thing aobut it all is the first pick in the PSD. it allows you to hold any club over a barrel for any player. more important than the difference between picks 1 and 2 i believe.

Good to see someones paying attention to the real issues. If we have PSD #1..we dont have to sacrifice any second ..or such round picks in trades for anyone we want out of PSD.. Gives us a very much better situation. Stikes me strange ( and yet not ) that so few grasp this.

Put simply..it makes our life easier :)

But if West Coast finish last, why would they sign a guy who has already stated that he wants to come to Melbourne, and would probably only sign a one year contract with them anyway, when they so desperately need to build their team.

I don't see Dean Cox going anywhere soon either

We won't win two more games for the season. So three picks in the top 20 is pretty much a lock. If only we had lost to the Bulldogs last year.

Picks 1,2, 17

Can any supporter come up to me and say they would have rather us beat the Dogs in 07?

I'm sure some of the winning culture berks will tell you that win meant everything to them

Lord... I'm not having this argument again.

Yeah that would be nice, but id rather not be chucked in the same lot as carlton. We will come last this year, theres no point cheering on other teams to ensure it. Poor support. Picks 4, 14 + 21 last year and pick 1, 17, 18 this year is quite a handy base to build on dont you think?

Just want to say guys that this wasn't inspired by whqat was written in Sat' sun, I didn't read it till Sunday night.

Just hopefull that we get as many young kids drafted in the next few years as we possibly can.

This is great,as we can now build a premiership winning team of passionate people who will finally take us all the way.

Why would any Demons advocate a lottery - at the moment? Hawthorn, StKilda, Footscray, Richmond and especially Carlton clean up big time courtesy of priority picks, yet we have fans who want to change the status quo so that we, potentially, miss out.

With the new teams next year, we will be best served by winning less than four again. That way we will at least guarantee ourselves a shot at the number one*, rather than having to wait for the new teams to rake the draft of all the top talent. I don't want to be rubbish, but I'd take being rubbish and getting extra talent, to being next-to-rubbish and missing out.

*At this point it is inconclusive as to who is to get next year's first pick - the new team, or a team in line for a No.1 priority pick because they got 4 or less wins in 2008 and 2009.

I'm not worried about if we take Watts or Rich, either will do, but my point is not sharing priority picks with too many teams.

You see I believe that it not only is about getting the best player we need, but also creating a talent gap to overtake the likes of carlton.

GAMEDAY: Rd 10 vs West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium. A win and a percentage boost will keep the Dees in top four contention whilst a loss will cast doubt on the Dees flag credentials and bring them back to the pack fighting for a spot in the 8 as we fast approach the halfway point of the season.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak
