The Paul Wheatley Appreciation Thread.

I’m not getting carried away with one win (no matter how good that last half was), but this bloke is unfairly maligned by too many of our supporters. Every week he does the job the coach asks of him. He isn’t a superstar, but he is a very honest player. Yesterday he was simply superb for four quarters. He put’s his body over the ball and ran extremely hard. The stats don't genuinely reflect his contribution. I know either Miller or McLean will probably get the three votes from yesterday, but at least for me Wheaters was right there with them.

Agree, he was fantastic yesterday, and has been probably our most consistent player this year. Would be up there in B&F. His foot was deadly accurate yesterday and he tried very hard. Very surprised so many people want him delisted at the end of every season.

I hate undue sugar-coating... as much as undue criticism...

But this is fair. Wheatley has been playing like a mature player. Leading. I always saw he and Ward as having similar effects on our games, being a bit invisible. But Wheatley has been very solid, and has been doing it week-in-week-out.

Yep Wheaters was great Yesterday, and that's the standard he must be every week if we are too rise. He wears number 31. What an honour that would be. Make it stick Paul-it's up to you

I think Wheatley has had a great couple of weeks.

I thought he was nearly the only one to hold his head up at half time.

Im not a fan because I think he has snuck under the radar that has targeted travis yze green and godders.

He has been ineffectual and compromising.

Im a fan of good skills and hard work and thats what he is showing. His long kicking to the wing was on display for the second week in a row..

I hope he keeps it up.

He has gone from lost hope to a maybe for mine. If he plays to my lost expectations this year it will be due to the coach.

Nuhh. Ive just read this crap.

Hes no good and wont make it.

Just a few years ago Wheatley had a great year but the following year he started getting injured again and has continued to sustain injuries since then. If he can manage his body and get through a season or two I would expect him to get right up there in our B&F he has a lot of talent and will surprise a lot of you.

Love the bloke.

I find it funny when ever we get a set shot from out side 50 he's ALWAYS hanging around. He never used to get attention

But yesterday every time he did hang around the 50 the freo boys were right on it. Shows have getting a reputation. Good on him love him

Awesome tackle in the last btw.

Absolutely agree with this thread. A perfect example is to look at the votes for demonland player of the week for this round. Hardly a vote. He was tremendous and has been most of the year. Yesterday he took it up a notch with great run from defence and more importantly excellent pin point passes (BY FOOT) over a long distance. I also loved his reaction when he came into the rooms after the game - he was pumped. To quote him "Go Demons!". He puts the club first and it is no wonder the players love him. I would almost consider him as part of the leadership group. My only reluctance is that he is injury prone.

Guest unstable punt
never had a problem with him. wreckon he would be a force around goals. :)

if you do it again do you reckon you could spell reckon properly? l was just reading the stats and he had 22 possessions and only played 67% of the game

just could not control the aggression in Donald - the breaking of a Richmond reserves players jaw on Punt Road, well...

and Rod Keogh, lacked a yard of pace but won two gardiner medals and became a solid player for the Saints....

although the game at Victoria park where we beat the filth, well that was fair... we had no chance of finals but we could do some damage and it cost the filth a second chance from memory!! jakovich, stynes, mahoney, brett lovett, sean wight, chopper lovell etc... how i love watching that replay now and again!!

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int

    POSTGAME: Rd 24 vs Collingwood

The Dees played insipid, error riddled & uninspiring footy all night and in a lightning delayed match they eventually succumbed to Collingwood by 46 points at the MCG in the final game of the year. Thank God this season is finally over. Bring on 2025.
