Without going over the top with panic, it seems it's a bit of a fluff article that has been taken from comments made by Jones.  Nothing from his manager or himself for that matter.  He hasn't even put off talks - just that he will take his time.

I'm not panicking.. I promise...

Posturing/waiting for the CBA as any player of his age & ilk should be advised to do.

With his brother at the club, he won't be going anywhere.

This is the new way things are done now.

Im not worrying about it anymore as it happens every fricken season.

No point worrying about shitz u can't control.

Its all a business.

With the CBA, more are going to put off, or they will get a deal like Sidebottom did.

I think a lot of players will be doing this in 2016 because of the new TV rights.

Doesn't bother me either way.

He frustrates me.

Would love to sign Cale Hooker as a free agent then trade McDonald out.

That's a very unlikely result but we can dream.

Interesting comments so far. He definitely seems to be one of those players who divides opinion. I must admit, I find it a little hard to warm to him, but it shouldn't be too hard if he keeps playing like he did the first half of last year.

Should the AFL drop the mandatory rule that requires every club to take a minimum three picks in the national draft so that Hawthorn can fit in all these players holding out on contract renewals so they can get to a premiership contender club?

We we may have to increase their player list numbers as well, why should Gen Z players be denied ultimate success?

Start grooming Frost in the backline. While McDonald is a good defender every thing else he does frustrates the hell out of me and yesterday was no different.

Or his brother, for that matter.

Can't say this worries me. As mentioned above, a bit of a fluff article. I can't see him leaving given his brother is at the club too.

Can't believe those who are sitting on the fence with this.

He's 22 (?) years old and has already done jobs on some of the best forwards in the game. Is a running machine, powerfully built and takes the game on albeit with the 'frequently odd' mistake.

If we lose him I'll be extremely [censored]-off.

absolutely

quality gorilla-minder, very much required

At best he's a competent rebounding KPD, at his very worst he's a rich man's Zac Dawson. ^_^

Keep.

He's gone.

Off to Freo as well?

I reckon you'll see Tmac and Jesse Sign on if we improve, and possibly both go if we don't, it's a pretty simple equation really.

McDonald's signature doesn't worry me at all - fully expect him to sign.

He's a gun CHB and would walk into any back six in the league; we're lucky to have him.

I reckon we'll see them re sign on anyway, as we are on the up.  it won't depend on ladder posi. it will depend on players improvement & team harmony,  at this stage anyway.

Hooker is too old for us now 'Dee', will be turning 29 the year he resumes playing...doesn't fit the list profile.

If we are looking at top 4 with a shot at it next year then maybe, but I would also hold onto McDonald.

You can't be serious.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.
