  1. Can someone ask him if he thinks Goodwin and Mahoney are the right guys?

  2. One of the most important things to do to beat Richmond in the last few years is to work out how to score against their defensive zone. It used to be Rance and then became Grimes who would almost always be the deepest defender and would read the play to drop back a good kick behind to stop teams getting out the back. They'd then rely on Broad, Astbury, Vlastuin etc to compete on the wings/half back. With excellent pressure up the ground they'd force long kicks to Grimes often standing by himself for easy marks or letting him come forward and have easy one on one wins due to better positioning. The Hawks did a great job of combating this when they played a couple of weeks ago. I thought I'd present a few examples of how they worked him around. 1. Burgoyne was playing full forward and he positioned himself perfectly to play off Grimes and get used in the play. In this first instance from a stoppage just back of the wing he pushes up and wide away from Grimes whilst the rest of the Hawks forwards and up the ground and towards the corridor. Grimes attempts to stay deep a good kick from the play as he likes to be. Wingard takes the short kick and Burgoyne can then run the ball and kick long away from Grimes - with an assist from a hard charging Scully - to Gunston who draws a free and goals. 2. From a centre bounce that is hacked forward Burgoyne comes up to get involved in play, but as soon as he gets the ball he thinks Grimes will be back where he left him and looks boundary side. The Tigers defender makes a good spoil and surprisingly the Hawks actually had a good lead from the square as Grimes was caught in no mans land, but more often than not the smart play of instinctively ignoring the long bomb will be the right move. 3. In this next example after the Tigers win a centre clearance but turn it over the Hawks forwards push hard to the wing. The Hawks rebound breaks the lines so the Tigers defenders then leave their opponents to press up much like our defenders do. Burgoyne realises this and this time instead of coming up he drops back away from Grimes in to clear space (see second image), then it's an easy kick to the pocket for a shot on goal. The other thing the Hawks did very well was both Burgoyne and later in the quarter Gunston drag Grimes up to forward line stoppages leaving other Tigers as the deeper defenders. That helped create goals because other defenders were unable to intercept mark or clean spoil and the Hawks beat out Stack in a one on one and forced a holding the ball from him. Adjusting our game plan to take away Grimes' influence and beat the Tigers zone will be crucial to winning. I'd suggest Melksham with a dose of Fritsch as the right match ups. Clever forwards who can get to the right spaces and then use the ball once they get it. The other forwards need to be aware of how to position around the match ups and how to take advantage of how the Tigers play.

  3. I think Clarko is probably referring to list possibilities - truth is, with our list, we should be making finals.

  7. I'd take it with a grain of salt Bobby, he also said Geelong weren't that good after they gave the Hawks a hiding at the cattery just a few weeks ago.

  8. Both travelled in an Uber then Sidebottom travelled to a covid unauthorised Collingwood staff member. sidebottom-dunn-in-covid-hot-water-after-drinks-with-howe On the basis of Spargo got two weeks as he was the senior player Sidebottom should also get two weeks. However: "...it's believed rigorous negotiations continue between the AFL and Collingwood". No prizes for guessing if some 'mitigating' circumstances are discovered. But Sidebottom is vice-captain. He should get extra simply on the basis of poor leadership.

  9. Thank you. Happy with the outcome. We asked all the questions we wanted. If people aren't happy that we didn't dig hard enough well all I can say is they can start their own podcast.

  12. This. We appreciate Glen's time and the club's willingness to allow guests on our podcast and we're not going to badger our guests. We will be asking pertinent questions but we're not going hold Glen's feet to the fire.

  13. Can I just call this out? @Demonland and others go to significant effort to run the podcast and to get someone as important as Bartlett as a guest. This isn't a hard-hitting investigative piece of journalism, it's an online forum. How about, if you want to ask the club a question, you do it, and otherwise don't [censored] and moan about questions possibly not being asked of Bartlett tonight.

  15. Weideman needs to hold his marks when he gets two hands to the ball and clunk them. And then kick straight. Not only will this be the difference in him becoming a genuine AFL player, but it has the potential to completely transform our side. Until he does this consistently, he will not be in our best 22 players. That's not to say Weideman should not be picked for structural and/or development reasons, because he has certainly shown potential. Weideman won't get a better opportunity than at MFC given how desperately we need a key forward to stand up. He should look at how Casboult is playing for Carlton. I think the shorter games have also meant that the need for a second ruckman is reduced. Also TMac and Tomlinson are both able to play a large percentage of the game. These factors have brought a rethink about how the team needs to be structured.

  16. 100% agree with this, though I wouldn't bring Jones back mainly because I think we are making too many changes week to week. Oscar should have one role, lock down the oppositions best key tall. This week it will be Tom Lynch. This then allows May to take Reiwoldt and Lever to be the sweeper and intercept marker. I would drop Smith for him, but no slight on Smith it is just better for team balance. Weideman to come in for Melksham who is way out of form atm. TMac to roam more up on the wings and CHF, Weid to play out of the goal square and 2nd ruck. I'd give Vanders and Hannan another week, but depending on form obviously Bennell and Jones are possibilities to come in.

  19. In a post match interview Clarkson expressed his concern for the serious deterioration of AFL football as a spectacle. He cited the Melbourne V Geelong halftime scoreline of just 2 goals apiece. He said this was not acceptable from TWO TEAMS THAT HE BELIEVES WILL PLAY FINALS THIS YEAR. Obviously he has more faith in our Demons than many of our posters here. Is he speaking as an ex Melbourne player or is his opinion based on true belief in our latent potential? Remember he is an astute and highly respected and successful coach. Your thoughts please.

  20. Havent seen the segment but I am getting flashbacks to when Paul Roos was analyzing our list in the media before the jungle drums started beating about him coming to the Demons. I know a lot of people may not want Ross Lyon as coach for whatever reasons, but I would take him any day of the week.. We have the talent we just need the coach.

  21. Interesting I watched the game again to look at our ball movement and we do seem to have a problem seeing the best loose man option down back and obviously up forward. I thought one of our problems for years is players who don’t present as an option forward of the ball carrier and I believe it is still not perfect. However watching the replay we often had players running into space but were ignored by the ball carrier who then kicked down the line. I noticed Lockhart repeatedly running into space to be an option only to be ignored by the carriers. Is it that hard to see free options at ground level? It’s too long since I played and back then you just kicked it forward so I can’t remember. Reminds me of when we used to see Jack Watts alone on the half forward line yelling out for the ball only to see Maloney or Jones bomb it long to a contest. Things don’t change much.

  23. Exactly. Clarko is a politician and a smart tactician.

  24. Clarko built his team with the shrewd and cunning trade to get a high first round pick for a bunny player in the early 00s (was it to draft Hodge) and then had the guts to select both Franklin and Roughead in the same draft and build a team around them. Remember it took years and it was only the catties stumble and fumble in the 2008 GF that they should never have lost that set the dorks on their way. The threepeat took over 10 years to arrive. There is no quick answer. It takes time. A coach needs to pick, choose and coach his team for success.

  25. Insanity = Doing the same things over and over again and expecting a different result. Platitudes = So, after the loss last week I watched our coach give his post match interview and noted the following quote : Godwin "Clearly we were inefficient forward off centre....We have got a lot of things to work on, especially forward of centre" Question "People might say, because it's a bit of a familiar story for a while, do you revisit the method?" Yeah we have revisited it (connection in the forward line) a few times" I thought to myself - I have heard this before, so re watched most of his interviews from round 1 2018 to the present (sad i know) Godwin quotes from post match interviews: Round 1, 2018 - "we've got some work to do inside forward fifty...64 (forward) entries is a lot and you should win games when you get 64 entries" (we lost) Round 14, 2018 - Question "you dominated the inside fifties" Godwin "our efficiency inside fifty wasn't the best tonight (we lost again) Round 18, 2018 = "we didn't connect well forward of centre, its a bit of a tale of our games this year where we struggled to connect...inside fifty. Round 2, 2019 - "we need to connect better forward of centre" "Round 5, 2019 - "were not connecting with the ball forward of centre" Round 6, 2019 - "We got beaten forward of centre to often......we couldn't connect with our handball or kicking (inside fifty)" Round 18, 2019 - "were trying to find an avenue to goal....we had enough opportunities today" Round 22, 2019 - "our in efficiency (inside fifty) is making us look worse" Godwin quotes over the last 2 years - featured in most post game interviews: "we played a pretty good football team tonight/today" "I understand that the fans are frustrated and deserve better" "We are going to work really hard to get ourselves out of this position" "Ive/we have full confidence in this set of players" "Im not interested in the past" (maybe thats why he learns nothing from it?) What else did I learn? I doubt we have played the same 6 players in the forward fifty for more than a few weeks in a row. Just about everyone and his dog has played in our forward line. Seems to me that until we solve this issue we are doomed to dwell at the bottom of the ladder.

I will listen later tonight or tomorrow. Yes I know what tonight is and I will be keen to see if hard questions are asked. I still stay with my statement that MFC members are too polite.

  32. leading metres gained for us last game??!? the notion of shifting him around from the role we brought him in as a free agent to play is one i don't understand at all it's like those suggesting we play may forward...why? by that logic o mac has to come in as a key defender; i'd rather may take that role and we find someone else who can play as a tall up forward...and i'd say no (at this stage) to smith or lever being the choices there as that trio need time to work out how to play together; it's been two games i can completely understand the calls for weideman or brown (or jackson) to come in to play as an additional tall forward, but i don't think it's time to throw the baby out with the bathwater when we're three games into the season, and only (an interrupted) two since resumption

  33. We had a moment the weekend before last when everyone else was playing - and we weren’t. I simply cannot imagine not having the Dees to look forward to. No matter how misguided, under performing or mismanaged the masses on this forum feel about us. Once we are gone, we will never, ever, be coming back. Worth thinking about.
