  1. The bigger clubs are advantaged money-wise. More blockbusters, more free-to-air prime-time games and therefore greater exposure for their sponsors. And that happens every single season. All the clubs aren't on an equal footing to begin with with the compromised draw. Reverse all that for the next 25 years and we're all squared off.

  2. Never a better time to be thankful we got rid of the pokies. Patting ourselves on the back whilst we profit from addicts during a recession is hardly what a football should be. We’ll find the money elsewhere.

  6. We need guys who are prepared to run both ways.

  7. Not fussed on who gets a game. Just want players that are prepared to put in 110% and the midfield guys to finally realise you HAVE to run both ways. Nearly all our Mids just like to win the ball in middle/forward and are not prepared to gut run back to assist defence. Reason why WC Mids kicked goals and ours didn't. Our boys just trot along in middle of ground and play with no accountability. Look at some past footage and 3 or 4 of our players trotting around centre all by themselves when oppo have the ball. This is not good enough.

  9. How do you know the money hasn't already been used. And having an asset that doesn't produce money on a short term basis is still better then having no asset. Not sure if you've looked at the cash rate lately but cash isn't king

  10. Ok so I’m officially not allowed to attend games anymore. A leading health figure has suggested the AFL could tell fans to keep booing and shouting to a minimum if they’re allowed into matches later this year. There are hopes spectators will be permitted into stadiums for late-season games and finals, if the coronavirus pandemic continues to ease around Australia. However Catherine Bennett, chair of epidemiology at Deakin University, told Nine the league may need to restrict fan behaviour. “I would think they may have to include as a recommendation – given it will be hard to maintain 1.5 metre between groups anyway – that shouting, hooting may have to be eased, given this will increase the spread from one person,” she said. “One of the COVID-19 transmission concerns is increased spread when people speak loudly, sing, and therefore cheering along their team.”

  13. Imagine if Collingwood or Richmond or Hawthorn players did the same? The other guys in the team wouldn’t put up with it.

  14. Yep i never understood this whole scenario. i hate Poker Machines BUT they are not illegal, anyone over 18 can thump money into them. the AFL obviously went hard on Clubs to do it, but where was the Compensation for it? Meanwhile Betting Apps are shoved down our throats every 3 minutes The whole thing is ludicrous

  15. the system works well for the AFL and for about ten of the 18 clubs. Unfortunately it wont change.

  20. I only briefly watched the video but there was no mention of what the board are doing outside of AFL activities. Its a very valid question what did they do with the sale of the pokies. Income producing assets are not always easy to replace and if they didnt rrplace the pokies then the board has left the MFC exposed financially. Now it is more complicated than one asset. But it's still a vaild question. The MFC sold the pokies licence under PJs watch for morality reasons. What did they do with the money? Have they left the MFC exposed? What is their financial plan apart from expecting AFL handouts?

  21. Of course we have a cash flow problem. Everything has stopped. this is not the year to perform badly though. Next year will be brutal in terms of cash, everyone will be needing it. we need to look good this year. We have to become a good investment or the Club will die
    3 points
  22. I refer you to the opening post.... If what you're saying is true then why would the club release a video on cashflow issues? In all seriousness, do you actually have nothing to add of value or are stupid one liners void of any fact or substance a demonland tradition? An asset that produces income regardless of its morality is more valuable than cash to pay debt.

  24. Correct. Love to have Penndles, Cotchin or Hodge in there letting these show ponies know exactly what is required. Only then will Clarry and his mates become elite players. Nothing less.

  25. Perhaps if the AFL could trial moving walkways on the wings this year, like they have in airports. Our players could move up and down rapidly and with less fatigue.

  26. So what? MFC sells off our licenses and the machines don't disappear. It just means instead of the money going to us it goes into Bruce Mathiesons or Wesfarmers hands. If people are stupid enough to put money into computers designed to steal it from them who are we to complain? If the government makes illegal I wouldn't complain. But while they are legal I see no issues profiting from them.

  27. Didn't quite know where to put this one, I've been watching the replay against the Hawks in 2003 throughout the afternoon interspersed by wrangling kids. Jeez, it took me back to being 23 and my adoration of Neitz. It's fascinating to me, reflecting how, literally E.V.E.R.Y T.I.M.E the ball was kicked in to our forward line when you watched it on TV, there was Neitz, like a [censored] colossus, either standing his ground, smashing packs, merely impacting in subtle ways because of his aura/reputation, taking 2 opposition backman etc etc. Essentially, watching the replay, I recognised the joyous anticipation of what couldn't be seen, left or right of screen when the ball was kicked from the centre square. Some good years back then eh!

  28. No it won't change DJ ... in a general sense the compromised draw is based on how many supporters a club has and by default, how many of those eyes will tune into prime-time TV. It's a commercial decision but ultimately, it disadvantages the smaller clubs (specifically the 4 smaller Victorian clubs) It hasn't helped that we've been a poorly performed team for decades and there is a correlation there but the Saints, Doggies & North have copped it even when they've performed well. Same deal for us prior to 2007. So any compensation handed out to disadvantaged clubs is fully deserved (if parity is sought)

  30. Yeah I know, it is simplistic. And I think most of us hope we even get another 5 year period to have that crack. I Just feel like we're in this 'one foot in front of the other phase' for the moment. Like most businesses just trying to survive and come out the other end and then try to build it back up again. Still so much uncertainty though.

  31. I don't want to be too negative here, but I haven't posted for a while, because to be honest, after how we performed in Round 1 off the back of 2019, I've been quite happy to see no football for a while. However, I think we can put out one of the best 'on paper sides' in the competition, certainly top 8 worthy. But where the negativity comes in for me is that not only does our talent drop away steeply after the best 22 (ie very little good depth), our coach who is ironically all about systems, hasn't fixed our systems that could enable plodders to be plug and plays in a well-oiled system. Without a decent system, it doesn't really matter how many good individual players we may have out there. I reckon Goodwin's goose is cooked unfortunately.

  32. I think you'll find he has moved on, even if you haven't! Just be sure to do it with your mouth closed. Oh! I'm going to be rich! All I need to do is invent a facemask design that amplifies sound instead of muffling it. The future of football crowds!

  34. Really highlights how important on field success is going to be over the next 5-6 years. some of that pain can be mitigated by extra revenue from deep finals pushes, especially this season if crowds do return for the latter part of the season. I feel like this puts Goodwin under the pump, if he's got a full list to pick from there really isn't much excuse for the team not to go pretty well

  37. The idea appears to be that he won’t be quite ready for the restart but without a VFL competition, that means another week or two of training. I wonder however, if he continues to impress at training and the AFL allows two extra interchange players, whether he might be given a limited run against Carlton.

  38. Melbourne trailed by a point when the siren sounded but Tony Anderson’s goal put the side in front at the main break. From there, the Demons asserted their domination scoring 5.9.39 to a single goal in the third quarter before they coasted home for a comfortable immediately ended any speculation about the result by kicking five goals to one to lead by 42 point victory to securely place them in the top four. 39. The downturn could have also been supplemented by the Government handouts Australia is enjoying at the moment. You're point on non producing at the moment is a stupid as your attempt to pretend you know what you're talking about. Where is the revenue coming from? Or are we expecting cash to magically appear from the AFL every year? I haven't looked in to the financial situation of the MFC all I have seen is a video saying we are having cash flow ïssues And being told by astute posters that selling cash producing assets is a great idea. The board are responsible for their decisions they are the custodians of the club and it's future. Lets hope they have a bit more insight than the proverbial demonland poster

  40. True. From PJ onwards said success on the field will bring success off (under good management). We are a footy club first and need to win and be successful on the field year on year.

  41. And do you know if it has been used or the resulting investment can't be accessed quickly? Yeah, those pokies would be real handy in the long term if the club folded soon, NOT! It's a moot point, they're gone. Move on.

And of course they grow on trees Not!!!! The other thing I have noticed about him is that NONCHALANT Rob Flower Yze effect of floating across a pack to take a mark. I would HATE to see him go..... a rare treasure in a pit in a somewhat empty trove!! KEEP !!

  49. The 1964 season moved into May ... Round 3, 1964 Melbourne vs Carlton Saturday, 2 May Venue: MCG Attendance: 45,494 B Crompton Massey L Mann HB Anderson Roet Leahy C Dixon H Mann Watson HF Groom Lord Kenneally F Barassi Bourke Townsend Foll Tas Johnson Wise Rov Emselle 19/20 Vagg Williams The Demons had been unconvincing in their opening two rounds and, despite their Round 2 win over North Melbourne, the selectors reacted by dropping three players in Matthews, Miller and Robbie and relegating Vagg and Williams to the bench. Future test cricketer Graeme Watson who passed away in April, 2020 was selected for his first game. It was not a game for forwards with skipper Ron Barassi, the only player to fire up front all day. He kicked two goals himself but his strong play set up many scoring opportunities for others in the team’s 46 point victory as the visitors struggled. At the final break, they had only one goal on the board. Evergreen stalwart Don Williams who came onto the ground in the second quarter replacing Tony Anderson (broken nose) and Dr. Brian Roet were Melbourne's best on the day. The team finished one man short after Brian Dixon (shoulder) and Barassi (cramp) left the field late in the last term.
