  1. Just listening to Angus's mum on ABC Grandstand. What a terrific person. Raised 4 boys, 3 to elite level sport and with them all out of the nest has taken in Luke J, Kossie and Trent Rivers into their home. An inspiration.

  2. I'd imagine they'll be training at Casey for the next few weeks so as to limit contact with the general public.

  4. So, a slap with a wet lettuce leaf. Where's the disincentive for other clubs not to do it (apart from the virus, of course)?

  5. I think it all depends on the caliber of players you have at your disposal. If we have Gawn and then Jackson becomes a star then you play both no matter what and build your game plan around that. If you don't have any great backup ruck option then you need to come up with your preferred structure. The risk is you lose your ruck man early in a game and then are left with an inferior ruck the whole game. I would like to see our coaching team focus on playing to our strengths as opposed to trying to do what everyone else is doing.

  6. Thats probably the most accurate rundown of our team i have heard for years. Identified every one of the issues that have been talked about repeatedly on this site, then talked about the upside to our list. First time i have heard someone who actually watches our games and knows the players. Good interview.

  7. Had a similar day on Saturday Wadda but backed a few winners today to make up for it. And I'm with you with regards to Russian Camelot ... looks a real good stayer in the making. If not already. There were a number of impressive winners at Caulfield on Saturday ... had backed a few of them previously and probably should have stuck with them. News Girl, Shot of Irish & Oasis Girl especially! But I was on So Si Bon at least ... oh the irony!

  8. The Daniher era 98-06 should have resulted in a flag. 2000 Essendon were too strong but 04 we were on top & lost the last 4 games to finish outside the top 4 .. just seem it was always a bridge too far for them.

  9. All teams need good people to help out when youngsters are brought into a club. Mother (and father?) Brayshaw certainly fit that bill. All of their boys seem like genuinely nice fellas, and that is a direct reflection on the parents. It is a very good thing that they have opened their doors to our new generation of players. Thank you Brayshaws....

  10. AFL training will resume from Wednesday morning, Victorian premier Daniel Andrews has confirmed. Speaking today, Andrews gave the green light to gatherings of up to 10 people from 11:59PM on Tuesday night.

  11. you could see it coming that the coach would take the fall. So much for player responsibility... hard to believe that one of them didn't say... hey is this okay ???

  13. I am also of the boomer generation. but suffered a lot in younger years from bullying and becoming a doormat. With this, I do not have this want to be better than everyone else, but rather, the best i can do. Maybe, this is a part of community mindedness. the notion that we cannot survive without one another... hence the team... concept. My parents were not the most confident people, but were warm and friendly to all. An empathetic way of being. My uncles and aunties were not of the, I'm just so good brigade. So, I guess I am a product of this inbuilt genetics, to some degree. Kindness to a fault, to the vulnerable and down trodden. Cynical of the wannabees. I think struggle in early life is a very good character building way of life. Teaching some very good lessons, in forming the persons character. Having things too easy growing up, IMO, breeds a contemptuous style in many. . # I see a comparison in all of this, in the Mfc in some ways, and the wider perception of us, as a club. .

  15. No. 37. Round 18 1979 v Essendon at MCG Perhaps one of the greatest turnaround in form in VFL/AFL history. In round 17, the Dees were obliterated by Fitzroy. A record 190 point loss (238-48). I was there at VFL Park and it was dark times. I remember leaving the ground (as a 12 year old) in stunned silence. I didn’t dare speak to my dad. It was ugly. It started to rain as we got in the car to drive home and I felt sick in the stomach. My team the mighty Demons had had a record VFL loss and were empty. 1979 had started with Ditterich back and recruited fabulous Phil Carmen. But Carmen left in controversy mid year and it was falling apart. I went the next week to the G but was not expecting much to be honest. We were playing Essendon who were in the 5 and about the same quality as the Lions. Ditterich was coach and I remember him saying it would be different with him back in the team. How right he was? By half time, it was game on. We were a few goals up and the forward line of young Robert Walters and Steven Smith were on fire. The Dees were unstoppable as Walters kicked 9 goals. Three more goals than the whole team kicked the prior week. Smith was a typical tall agile CHF and was a beautiful kick. The team had been suddenly reborn as Greg Wells ( definitely one of the best Demon players I’ve seen) , Robbie Flower and Ditterich lifted the rest of the group. Laurie Fowler and Ray Biffin (brought out of retirement) held the backline together. Glenn Elliott, who moved from the Saints together with his brother Robert, starred. They carried the Dees to a stirring victory. Some red and blue spirit was restored. As we did, my late father and I ventured back to the Malvern Vale Hotel post game. I enjoyed my raspberry-soft-drink and I think Dad enjoyed a more few amber refreshments than usual. Melbourne 21.8.134 defeated Essendon 16.9.105 by 29 points.

  19. Yes agree. It’s definitely a good summary of where the club is at. It’s all the usual topics that us Demons fanatics talk about. Spoiler alert - forward conversions are poor (need to convert from inside 50s dominance) - defence suffers on transition from mid/forward line turnovers - injury free run needed, especially for Lever and May (they forgot to mention Jetta only played a handful of games in 2019) - Supporters hope and faith needs to be rewarded - Goodwin has a long term contract but if 2020 is poor like 2019, he’d be under pressure - youth to propel themselves up to A graders (Oliver, Petracca, Brayshaw) - Jack Viney could be placed for a year to showcase his awesome ability - recruitment of Langdon and Tomlinson is a big plus - Tom McDonald could rebound and be critical to kicking enough goals - big question marks over Sam Weideman (very important year) - Jackson and Pickett are super exciting young talent - Bailey Fritsch is developed into a very handy midsized forward and Dees need to get him signed up to prevent other clubs - Jones future as he is now not an automatic selection (could this be his last year?) I think they should have covered off the reliance on New Captain Max Gawn.

  20. Must say that was what I was thinking but tbh not sure that hanging around in a park is even allowed these days. So many rules in so many States and countries it's impossible to keep up with the finer nuances.

  23. No.38 1983 Round 15 v Carlton at Princes Park I certainly remember this day, even though I was only 16 at the time. At Dees had recruited Moore and Templeton at the start of 1983. We had a promising 1982 (8th place) and we were hoping to climb further up the ladder and further test the top teams. We couldn’t seem to match them for four quarters. On this day, we headed to Carlton to play the reigning premiers (in fact Blues had won 3 premierships in 4 years 79,81&82). They were a powerhouse. After a tough close win over the bulldogs in round 14, we were without Robbie Flower and Peter Moore both injured. Our season was 6 wins 8 losses and we needed to beat a top 5 side. The Blues were in 6th place and we had only just lost to them earlier in the year. The first half was even but we were a goal up. Then we surged and despite some questionable Blues tactics, we shot clear by a few goals at 3/4 time. We continued in the last to win by 39 points. I was proud to be a Demons supporter. We had coped sh&$)t for years and now had a team that had some respect. The coaching return of Barassi was starting to show some dividends. We won after strong games from Alan Johnson (a fantastic recruit) Gerard Healy (an absolute star), Stephen Icke (who could play CHF or CHB) and Brian Wilson (an absolute engine in the centre). A young Glen McLean (a ruckman who was also agile around the ground) was having a great year and huge upside. Rodney Wright and Alan Jarrott has come from North as well and were steady and tough. Giles and Stephen Smith controlled the defence. Gilesy was one of my favourites. He was like Sean Wight. Always gave 100% to every contest. Kelvin Templeton at full forward was proving to be a very good addition if he could stay healthy. I do recall when he kicked a goal halfway through the last quarter to give us a 5 goal lead. I was thinking that’s truly money well spent. I think I might have screamed “Go Demons!!” loudly as well Melbourne 15.16.106 defeated Carlton 9.13.67

  24. the second ruck died years ago. It always is a player that can play another position and who can relief ruck. The real debate is over the first ruck who cannot impact upon general play. It is apparent that the round the ground skills are valued well in excess of the ruck skills.

  25. Oddly, one of my favorite plays from the Ox came near the end of his career when he lived up to the nickname. He faced two tacklers, ran through the middle and they grabbed at him from either side. His size and momentum carried him through and they swung around behind him, crashed into each other and dropped like stunned mullets. Classic slapstick football.

  29. Such mixed feelings watching those highlights. He easily could have been our best ever. I forgot how good he was through traffic too. I had the privilege of being part of some workshops focussed on water and first nations people last year. I met Liam's Aunty and Uncle. The Walpiri elders have a sacred waterhole in the desert. When the conditions are right (they can tell from how the hawks and eagles are gliding), they burn the bush which creates the clouds to bring the rain. Pretty amazing. Anyways, they said that Liam was going really well these days and back playing his footy and loving it. So good to hear. Does anyone up that way get to still see him play?

  30. Jeez MFC have been stiff with some really freakish and sometimes unstoppable players, imagine if the ox, jurrah and jakavich played mostly full careers. Nearly brings me to tears. fmd

  31. Agreed. Cale mentioned a number of interesting points about facilities (e.g. junction oval), player development, support staff, complacency and others, which gives a fairly honest overview of us at the time.

  34. Can understand the cynicism.. after years of "training the house down stories" one has to wonder. Then again these stories are for the masses and not for the aficionados that inhabit this wonderful forum. Now if they had a story about how May had been studying the left footed kicking philosophy of Euripides we could have a serious discussion. When a good man is hurt, all who would be called good must suffer with him.

  35. May has been telling us how ready he is since he joined the club. May needs to shut up and prove it on the field. I am not sure why he gets asked anything. Just because we paid too much for him does not make his opinion worth more than any player. When footy gets back to a full season and we make the finals, I doubt May will be in the team. He was too old and over rated when we got him and he is yet to prove he has been worth the trouble and expense.

  36. Steven May will be 29 years before the start of next season. So far the Club has got 9 games out of him. As events have transpired, not a great return on investment.

  37. Watching that Id forgotten what a powerful and accurate kick he was...this on top of all his other extraordinary attributes. I agree with previous posters. After Robbie he's the best Ive seen play for the dees. Could do it all.

  38. Thanks again that was fantastic to watch. if only we had a couple like him now. those that did not see him play before his recos just would not believe how the ball followed him or how hard he hit packs and the heights he got to flying over players he was “special”. To quote a well known commentator

  39. He was a sensation before his 3 knee reconstructions. One of the saddest curses to hit MFC. His eventual return and win in the 1999 B&F plus 2000 grand final was a testament to his determination and talent.

  41. This is why the VFL is endangered. For reasons that are beyond me VFL form rarely converts to AFL form. At best it delivers an injured best 22 player a few weeks of match practice before rejoining the main team. This can be done reasonably well by an alternative training program at far lesser cost. Finally the AFL has largely killed off the community spirit aspect of the VFL competition. It has always been a pleasure going along to the standalone clubs and seeing their supporters passion for their club but in the main they are a mature declining group. Long live the Burra Burger !!
