With Langdon and Tomlinson we increase our running power, Langdon has far greater speed but picking up a couple of two way running types clears a big void in our game last season. Greater run and spread opens up many options across the ground10 points

Short update from Scott Lucas (Langdon's manager): Lucas said Melbourne and Fremantle have had "really good dialogue" about a trade for the Dockers wingman. "If the deadline was this Friday it would all get done, but when it's next Wednesday you work to that date. "To get a deal done opens up a heap of other deals. "I think there's an understanding of getting it done and I think expectations from both sides are quite close."9 points

Agreed. For his size he is very light footed and athletic. People comparing him to Jones and Lewis on the wing have NO idea. He is also an elite mark, and how often were we coming out of the backline this season with literally nobody to kick to (except Gawn vs. 19 opponents)? We lost Hogan who played so well roaming up the ground and taking marks as a link up man. Tomlinson really fills that gap and will allow us to transition the ball more purposefully up forward.9 points

Spoke extremely well on both trade radio and SEN. We've got yourself a fantastic individual who will add a lot not only on field but more importantly off field.9 points

When we get Lever, May and now Tomlinson on the park together they'll add a bonus of mature hard footy smarts and grunt that will help our young team step back up in 2020. If the footy god smile on us an VDB, KK and Smith recover we shall be a beast to deal with. Getting excited about 2020. ?8 points

Amazing that there’s even any question if pick 22 is “fair”. Established AFL quality in exchange for a lottery ticket. It’s the noest of brainers ever for me. At least we’ve learned from the Melksham and Hibberd trades and aren’t screaming “overs!!!”8 points

Obviously it depends on the talent in the draft pool, but generally speaking I would expect a superior footballer than Papley at pick 3. He's a good player, no doubt, but he's no star. He wouldn't even be classified as a great player IMO. Early picks give you the chance to grab a star or at least a player you hope will be in your top 6-8 players. Of course drafting is a risk, but if you don't take risks and you trade away pick 3 for good solid citizens like Papley you rob yourself of a prime opportunity to add elite talent to your list. The general consensus on the Langdon trade is an early second round pick and I'd take Langdon over Papley.7 points

And that was the key factor in our early losses that had us 1-4 and backs against the wall. Unclear whether work rate and structural issues contributed, but there was no doubt we were run off our feet and struggled to cope physically with the load in those losses to Port, Geelong, Essendon and St Kilda. We actually did improve a fair bit after that point and lost two games (WCE and Crows) that we should have easily won. I've got no doubt those two losses, in particular the Crows one (which was perhaps the most I've seen a team dominate a game without winning), just shattered our belief and confidence and we never recovered. Had we won those two games it would've been 4 wins from the past 5 and, while we were not at the level of 2018, we may have gone on to win 2-3 more games and finish with 10 or so wins.7 points

The last time we recruited a player from a losing grand finalist we made the prelim the following year. Get behind him, welcome Adam.6 points

“I love playing on the wing. Obviously you can get pigeonholed on the fat-side wing but Goody has specified being around the ball at the stoppages as well. “I’m a big body and I love being around the ball and using my frame. “That’s exactly what he spoke about when he caught up. It’s one of the reasons why I’m really keen to come to the club.” ?6 points

Exactly right PSD. Add two elite endurance runners who can provide switching options offensively and gut run defensively to cover opposition switches and tic tac options. Combine with a list that comes back six weeks earlier, has fewer surgeries and players in rehab and gets a high percentage of sessions under their belt and get the miles in the legs. Equals a completely different team able to prevent easy opposition ball movement and transition and run out quarters and games.6 points

Gee fancy a top side like GWS letting Tomlinson 'struggle' through 144 games and 4 final series for them?6 points

Just do the stupid deal and get it done. Don’t drag it out. That’s why the trade period needs to go from Mon-Fri.5 points

Tomlinson: I’m super excited. I caught up with Goody a few times + the characteristics of the footy club really aligned with me. We’ve spoken about playing a consistent role next year + really getting some continuity in my footy. Tomlinson: A lot of people talk about talent, but it doesn’t mean much if you don’t work hard. I’m looking forward to working really hard with this group, getting stuck into a big pre-season. Tomlinson: I scratched the surface in 2018 in terms of my form - I performed a lot better than I did this year. I think I’ve got a lot more to give + I can’t wait to get stuck in. Tomlinson: It’s been an emotional time, having only finished playing a couple of weeks ago. I thank GWS for everything over the past eight years, but I’m very excited to be here. Tomlinson on his off-season: I think I start in six weeks, so it’ll be straight back into it. I’ll get things sorted in Sydney, before resetting + getting ready for pre-season. I can’t wait.5 points

I don't know why people are saying Tomlinson is slow. He's not lightning quick, but he certainly isn't slow.5 points

Yet that's where he's played for a team that has played finals 4 years in a row, including the GF this year...5 points

Our team just got that little bit better. No draft picks involved, and not massive coin. Hasnt played a game for us yet, but im gonna go out on a limb and call it a win in advance. Welcome to MFC Basil Tomlinson5 points

He’s kicked 120 goals in 4 seasons after being taken as a rookie and will only get better. We have a serious lack of small forwards and one of the worst forward lines in the game. I think Papley would address our deficiencies very well.5 points

You keep saying this, except he plays on a wing. That's his best position. Here is his possession heat map for 2019. The one showing the hotspots on the wings, a bit in the centre, the defensive flanks and dropping back to full back (but never going near CHB), and occasionally drifting forward on the flanks? That's Tomlinson.5 points

Viney 3rd in the B&F is a solid indication of how the team went in 2019. He had a very average year. He is a tough unit, i admire that, but his skills were very average I don’t know why he is Captain, i hear him on the Demon Podcast and he is just a big kid. That is fine, but i think we can do better in the Leadership Department. He needed to lift the team in 2019 and i didn’t see it interesting 2020 coming up5 points

Rare athleticism has to be given a little more leeway. We lack X factor so I hope he can get fit and create some excitement.4 points

Agree. Draft picks are over rated. Posters saying flat out no to Pick 3 for Papley are effectively guaranteeing for example that Caleb Serong will be a far better player. Risky business!4 points
-
Which is why I don't want to part with it. I'm not sold on splitting the pick either to land a Papley.4 points

I think the colour would represent time spent in that part of the ground? Obviously players don't have possession of the ball all the time, and the map would indicate more time was spent on or near centre wing, in the middle when the ball is on the other side, or drifting to half forward or half back.4 points
-
I think we got Tomlinson so we can use him in a similar style to that of Vandenberg was when fit. and Hogan and TMac at times as well. not a true outside winger in the old sense, but a big body utility type used in and around the contest, with the ability to work into space and take a mark around the ground.4 points

Looking back at Mahoney's interview last friday, and taking my MFC goggles off, I think Mahoney was ambushed by the question. He wasn't expecting it and ended up floundering through it. I think he meant that we weren't looking at any more coaches because we may have already decided on them and are just filling in the minor details before we announce the signings.4 points

He and his management have played it very well, will have an increased offer from the Pies with triggers for a 3rd year if he stays fit. I'm glad we didn't go desperate and up the offer to 4 years. Something will have to give at Collingwood next year4 points
-
Anyway, I personally think this is a very good pick up. Perfect age at 26 years of old so will hopefully start to see the best of what he has to offer. A few need to reserve judgement, I remember Jake Melksham copped it worse when we picked him up and he has been a very handy team player for our club. Another thing no one has mentioned is that he was pick 10 in the 2011 national draft. So it's another 1st rounder that we have added to our list? Besides GWS and GC is this the most of any other team?4 points

Welcome aboard Adam, good to have a two way runner on board whose marking will assist with connection in transition and whose back up ruckwork has him as a Pedersen upgrade in terms of endurance4 points
