BILLY Stretch's ability to push from end-to-end and transition quickly between attack and defence made him the standout during Melbourne's main training session at Maroochydore Sports Complex on Tuesday afternoon. http://www.afl.com.au/news/2018-01-30/billy-stretch-the-standout-in-match-simulation-drills6 points

Some pics from club website: http://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/2018-01-30/photo-gallery-monday-january-29 Love these two pics (with my imagined dialogue) Hogan tauntingly to Clarry: Come and get me! Clarrie has the last laugh, somewhat sheepishly: Take that!4 points

I tuned in to SEN today at 3.24pm and got 6 minutes of adverts....Riveting stuff. I have set the dial to listening to podcasts and audio books until the football season starts again3 points

Just returned from a trip to the states and went to 2 NFL games. One was the Oakland Raiders last home game, and the other the New Orleans Saints for wildcard weekend. Both games were awesome and the atmospheres were far better than any other sporting event I’ve been to. Definitely not just a TV game for mine and like most USA sports they keep you entertained during the downtime.3 points

Interesting. Made me have a quick look at Zurich's sponsorships. While I haven't found a list I came across this story which claims that Zurich's US division was one of the 122 biggest sponsors in the US in 2015. It's in the group within that 122 which spends the least (US$15-20 million per annum), and being alphabetical, you have to scroll right to the end to find their name, but I draw comfort from them at least being considered to be a "big sponsor". Reiterates that it's a great get for us.3 points

The triangle are in question is a massive space. It’s close to 5000 square meters. If a facility were to be built it will be at least 6-7 levels high plus a roof top area for entertaining. Even if you were to utilize 70% of the area it would still constitute 21000 square meters of commercial space. That would make it the largest operation in the afl. The only thing it wouldn’t have is an indoor gymnasium big enough to do football drills etc3 points

Well CF Orr Stakes huh, here we go. Two of my fav horses here in Tosen Stardom and Voodoo Lad. Tosen has placed over the distance 1400m and begins his journey to The Doncaster 1600 and The Queen Elizabeth 2000 both at Randwick in April. Voodoo Lad, 19 placings from 24 starts (10.7.2) has good form over this distance including a few wins. More will develop as we head toward the race in a week and a half.2 points

Thanks to Macca for the suggestion. Thanks to Demonland for the thread title change. Cheers guys.2 points

Yes, well done @Wadda We Sing and to those who you contacted. We'll get to 100 pages before you know it ... especially with the best bet/tipping comp being in operation. I reckon a good number of regular contributors would be 8 - 12. The more the merrier really. We may not get to that number but we've now got a few things in place to attract some more punters. Had a sneak peek at the first big Group 1 of the Autumn (Details - The C F Orr Stakes) and there's any number of familiar names entered. It's a really good field.2 points

If Billy can step up and play a Gaff like role (that's his go) for us this season then that will be a huge bonus and a key component in how far we can go.2 points

Ha ha ha! Playing cricket we would change the tea break time for the Caulfield Cup. 22 flanneled fools and an umpire hovering around the Sanyo transistor. Back in those days everyone had a bet.2 points

Yeah, we were blessed to live through that era. A lot of the grounds are still there, i hope they revisit it again. I played Lawn Bowls for many years on a Saturday, and would dash inside to watch some of the bigger races, much to the horror of my teammates and opposition!2 points

Back in the day when I was a W & P punter I'd sometimes go 10 the Win & 20 the Place (that sort of ratio) ... 'Ace High likes to lead and we know it boxes on extremely well. And the Caulfield straight isn't overly long. Needs a decent barrier draw, all the same.2 points

I agree Macca. Dans part owner likes to bet on horses first-up ( with a lot of success mind you) but he only backs them when they have won first-up in previous preps. It's his little strategy, problem is, he only tells me about his winners after the fact. I've followed this a few times without success. Tempted to have a little flutter on 'Ace High', currently $26 with Tab.2 points

Well I played cricket for over 30 years (on a Sat arvo) so I never used to have the opportunity to go to the Spring Carnival. During the winter I was either playing footy on a Saturday or I went and watched the Demons play on a Saturday - so the races missed out then too. The transistor ruled! (the tranny) That all changed when I stopped playing cricket and when the Demons started playing predominantly on Sunday's (from when Joe Gutnick was Pres?) ... which happened at the same time. So I've got used to having my Saturday arvo's free for the races. Making up for lost time so to speak. But I'm with you though Wadda - footy every week on a Saturday with all the scores from the other grounds was great. I'm glad I lived in that era. You'd go and see a band afterwards whilst Sunday's was nearly always playing golf with a hangover!2 points

I still think Saturday arvo is the best time for footy, but thats just me! Yes i really like that aspect to, as i often dont have a clue as to what race a horse had to go to prior and what it leads onto. Its a really great resource. Ive had a bit of a mixed bag over the years. There was time there when Caulfield was nearly impossible to pick. It seems to be a bit better these days. I guess ive had my best results at Flemington, but as i used to live in Elwood, i still consider Caulfield my local.2 points

'Ace High' has been entered for the Expressway Stakes at Rosehill on Saturday ... 1200m only though so it might be a bit short. However, it often pays to keep a lookout for these class horses dropping back in distance ... the horse has been ridden forward for a lot of its races.2 points

Well that's the crux of it D77 ... Saturday afternoon AFL is often filled with ordinary match-ups and there's no AFL on free-to-air Saturday afternoons anyway. Because of that, people look for other things to do or watch. Rugby League & Super Rugby avoids Saturday afternoons so what's left? The Thoroughbreds or local sport.2 points

WOW!! The DL censor got me!! -- and butter wouldn't melt in my mouth! Thought I was using a perfectly acceptable term for a cat! (Starts with "P" and ends with "Y".) Oh, my, what have they done to the English language??!!! Mind you, I guess those of us old enough to remember the Pommie sitcom "Are you Being Served" would recall deal old Mrs Slocumbe getting into hot water for using that term for her cat, with the obvious other interpretation applied to that word by the male members of the staff...2 points

something on the value of sponsoring sports - and presumably, by extension, sporting clubs - here: https://mumbrella.com.au/starting-figure-value-sponsoring-sports-495992 interesting theory: Researchers are starting to build the case for sports sponsorship, showing it increases employee morale, for example. My colleagues and I created the Sponsorship Power Index, to try to track sponsorship objectives such as sales and brand awareness. We have proven that factors like the length of the sponsorship, the brand fit with the event, and the amount spent on “activation” (advertising the sponsorship) correlate with sponsorship success.2 points

Who will listen to radio coverage of the Super Bowl? Bizarre decision.2 points

Love the NFL. No idea what Whateley's knowledge of the game is but the calling is easier than the special comments, it is usually an ex player/coach doing that and they talk through what happened and how. If they have some one decent with him it could work, if not it will fail massively.2 points

Gerard whately is going to call the Superbowl for SEN. US football is easily the second the best sport in the world running a very close second to Australian football and that's probably just down to my own biases. It is the most strategic game bar none and there is an infinite number of things to dissect and talk about. Not sure the average Australian audience/SEN listener will care though.2 points

Flemington has produced the best luck for me over the years Macca. It's my favourite track in general. I'm enjoying that link, i missed it the first time for some reason. You've also made me look at our fixture again, only 2 Saturday afternoons? Looks like Saturdays are taken up by "A Day at the Races."2 points

Hutchy doesn't do PC. He does vendettas. Also collecting trophies. He got Whately and Daisy as trophies to put on his media mantelpiece for everyone to admire. Entirely possible as for some weird reason, Dwayne seems to be highly regarded within the industry.2 points

Fascinating read here about Israel's attempts over the years to assassinate Yasir Arafat, an extract from a forthcoming book about the history of Israeli intelligence agencies and their targeted killings. What stands out is the moral tussle between senior military / intelligence / government figures, and the lengths to which some of them were prepared to go to, to get rid of the PLO leader, and how they were thwarted by others who thought the collateral damage (such as shooting down a commercial plane) was too high a price to pay. Really looking forward to the book as the article reads like a thriller and seems to be meticulously researched, with multiple sources giving their perspective on how each event unfolded.1 point

Don't disagree with you but for every billionaire there will be people who, through no fault of their own, be crushed by the system. Unfortunately there is no perfect system or to be completely accurate, good system that doesn't have inherent flaws when trying to balance competing needs.1 point
