  2. If he was fit and healthy all year there would have been a far greater chance that we would be playing finals.

  3. Saty - I'm no fan of the Hogan bashing that's going on these days, but let's be realistic. If you watch the shirt pull from Bews it barely lasts a second and Hogan falls over as if he's been shot. It's not a good look. As LH said earlier, had he been doing the team thing he could have laid the shepherd and allowed Jeffy to goal.

  5. Lol, embarrassing for a power forward to be playing for free kicks like this. This sums up my frustrations with him, he just needs to focus on doing the basics, leading, chasing, tackling. Needs to play a team game, it appears like all the media talk about him being the next big thing got to him as it did with Stringer.

  6. Richmond now get the fun job of trying to find 5 quality assistant coaches, get them on the same page as Dimma and get them to build a rapport with the players in time for pre season, with the huge potential Dimma gets sacked half way through next year and they all get moved on anyways.

  7. We're not going to attract a very good ruckman who is prepared to spend all his time at Casey waiting for a Max injury. Jake Spencer is the best you can get for this role. If we recruit a ruckman he needs to be a forward-ruck who can play alongside Max.

  8. We can still make the finals if 3 teams above us all have some Essendon type drug [censored] go down.

  9. Hunt, like most young footballers, probably wouldn't give a stuff. He would be just thrilled, that he has got games, played well and is being loved by the Dees fans, as well as being noticed by the more astute footy people in the AFL. I don't include the Rising Star judges in that last category.

  10. What a great performance by Christian (relatively speaking). He is one of the few today who stood up and close to our best. Showed his class all day and worked hard - 7 tackles. Mighty effort after being ill for so long and losing so much weight. 2017 will be his year and with him we have some chance of making finals (today notwithstanding). Without him...? Can't believe that people keep putting his name up for trade!

  11. I very much hope that he signs with Richmond. I'm convinced the entire club is some sort of long-term psychological study on the human capacity for self-delusion.

  12. Inside Football player ratings are a good guide as to a player's year and consistency. Daniel Rioli played 18 games and rated 5 or above 5 times. He rated above 5 once when he received a 7. Six times he had the inglorious achievement of scoring a 2 out of 10. His average rating was 3.5. Jayden Hunt played 19 games and rated 5 or above 15 times. He rated above 5 twelve times. Five times he rated 7 or above, including an 8. He scored a 2 once. His average rating was 5.5. You be the judge.

  14. Have you even watched him play? Last year when he was able to string games together, he became one of our most influential & damaging players. Missing games due to illness is not the same as being injury riddled. I'm mystified how you jokers don't see that.

  16. So the AFL have been caught almost literally burying a body. Their excuse: "Good timing! We were just digging up this body ... to take to the coroner ... valuable evidence ... Thank god, the criminals might now be brought to justice." Meanwhile at AFL house, Mark Evans receives the secret code and starts warming up the shredders.

  22. Geelong are always good with the outfits. Mitch Clark is going to rock up dressed as an AFL player this year which will be a hoot. Can't wait to see what Terls brings to the table. Trengove was planning on going as Usain Bolt But that idea was quickly shut down by H. Pedo apparently will be coming dressed as Cardinal Pell.

  25. Had a look at his 29 games and 2014 - 12 games, 5 of which were as a sub 2015 - 10 games as a defender, 3 of which were the last of the season coming back from hamstring injuries. 2016 - 7 games the last few of which he played under duress from illness. So he has played about 20 full games, fully fit. So if would be fair to say he hasn't had much of run at it to show what he can do. But there is a lot to get excited about. In addition to his silky skills the things that have stood out for me: Coolness under pressure eg the winning goal vs Ess in 2014. Roos said he was the guy he would always love to have the ball in those circumstances. So come to the crunch he is the guy who will deliver a goal when we most need it eg after the siren in a GF. He is equal to Jack Watts with his footy IQ. We don't have many of those. He can certainly find space which enables him to make the right decision nearly every time. Nearly always hits targets. Brings others into the game. Plays the role he is given and follows instructions. Can kick goals. He may not look fast as all his games have in a game plan that was defence focused and we had a shutdown/limit the scoreboard damage style. I think he will relish the 'take the game on' offensive game we now play and his speed of foot, hand and brain will make him a real asset. This is an edited version of Plapp's review 2 weeks ago: '...He played an inside mid role and spent some time forward...but the one thing that I was really pleased about his game on the weekend was his ability to fulfill and play his role. But when he got the ball in his hand, he really hurt the opposition and always seemed to manufacture an inside 50 or help set up a goal. Every time he touched the ball was huge for us on the weekend.' Sorry to be a bit long-winded, just wanted to put his 3 years in context. Understand why people have doubts but for mine he has shown enough brilliance to predict he will be a key factor in getting us into the finals in 2017.

  26. Just thought I would pass on a bit of banter that I heard over here in Adelaide on the 5aa sports show this afternoon... Regular segment on a Monday arvo where old man Cornesy joins Mark Bickley and Stephen Rowe and have a p155 and moan about how much Victoria hates SA footy and how both local teams went on the weekend.... blah....blah....blah... But at the end of the show Cornesy was saying that Simon Goodwin has apparently made contact with his old mate Scott Thompson and asked him if he'd be keen for a 1 year playing contract for 2017 with a view to moving into a coaching position in 2018.... Has apparently been offered a low ball 1 year deal to stay a fruit loop We lost the bloke for the best years of his career obviously but wondering what peoples thoughts are on the possibility of a reunion... Cornes did go on to say that his family is settled in Adelaide but all three blokes agreed that it would be a fantastic career move and a win for Melbourne ...

  30. I've done the stats - youngest team for 12 rounds of the year and least experienced for 10. Next youngest Brisbane, who were 7 for both. Just sacked their coach. Yet some are still worried by the youngest team in the comp finishing the last 2 weeks badly. They're more interested in the fade-out than a win against Hawthorn, who don't lose the close ones And it wouldn't surprise me if some of those posters in the preseason couldn't see 10 wins coming.

  31. I am a big fan of people who have been to the big dance (ie got themselves a senior coaching gig), been rejected and reflected on their own performance and then come back with some humility. He seems to me someone that would be significantly better the next time round as a coach (or assistant). Yes from me,

  32. In terms of the first handful of games my preference would be in this order: Round 1 - Richmond (H) Round 2 - Richmond (A) Round 3 - Richmond (H) Round 4 - Richmond (A) Round 5 - Richmond (H) Round 6 - Richmond (A)

  33. Logical and strategic decisions, as made by football clubs, can be mutually exclusive. Seem to remember one club sacking the CEO but ended up sacking the coach the following day instead.

  34. Neither would be better. The footy gods will hopefully deliver them both to Richmond for the laughs.

  35. Oliver played 13 games and rated five or more 8 times. He rated above 5 seven times. Five times he rated 7. His average rating was 5.4.

  36. As a comparison to show how good Hunt's year was, Callum Mills, who is favourite to take out the award, played 20 games and rated 5 or above 18 times. He rated above 5 nine times. Four times he rated 7 or above, including two 8's. His average rating was 5.6 to Hunt's 5.5. One will win the award and the other didn't get a nomination.

  37. I anticipate the following statement soon from the AFL overlords: "A full investigation in this case is not required as there was no scheduled drug test on the morning in question. We see no reason to punish Lachie. The avoiding of a theoretical drug test is manifestly different to the avoiding of an actual drug test. It works in a similar way to our equalisation policy." Or something equally convoluted and contrived.

  38. Absolutely correct Bub, although I thought the loss against Carlton was far worse in a lot of ways. But against the Cats, we were never going to win agains a side which was finals bound and looking for a top 4 finish. Clearly any hope we had of playing in September vaporised the week before against Carlton, so the guys just switched off. That said, for Roos' last game as coach, you would have hoped they would have flown the flag.............. just a little?

  41. Watch as absolutely nothing comes from this. The "cleaners" at AFL HQ will be working in overdrive to shred every document, sweep every rug and delete every file tonight. God forbid their precious little concession-riddled pet has an ounce of controversy associated with it.

  42. 2 or 3 seasons ago yes. Now, no. At the end of his career. Has really slowed up over recent years and time has caught up with his body, injury wise. His kicking lacks penetration. Now, just a slower version of Nathan Jones.

  43. Robbed. Even in this round, the winner who hardly played any other good games during the season, had only 17 disposals, two less than Hunt who played in a team that was badly beaten. There's no justice.

  45. I watched Casey at Box Hill today - the ground is a 10 minute walk away - and stood next to the Casey interchange. It was fascinating, haven't heard such swearing since yesterday via my teenage daughter, but what stood out was Chris Dawes, in the trenches, encouraging, phoning messages to Coach Plapp, taking the forwards in the 3 quarter time huddle and 'coaching' them. The players took notice. His involvement was inspirational. The guy who stood next to me was a huge Dawes fan, asked me why I was and I replied that when he plays - and he's often put his hand up to play while not 100% - he is always there to provide a huge contest. He then told me how his niece had suffered horrific injuries in a car accident, about how Chris Dawes visited her, how he was still keen to bear witness to her recovery. If the guy wants to stay a Demon, fer crissake, offer him a reasonable deal to provide some much needed experience to what is still one of the youngest lists in the AFL.

  46. Get some perspective: it was a success. Very young players playing in winning Melbourne sides, a huge percentage increase, a very young list in comparison to other clubs. Relax, the next few years will be good.
