Got along to training this morning. I believe the whole list was present save for Mitch King. Arrived to see a "sore / tightness" group jogging slow laps comprising Viney, Kent, Salem, Vince, Terlich IIRC. The rehab group consisted of JKH (hammy strapped) and Jeffy doing some quick hands handballing. Jeffy later proceeded to walk a couple of laps and then disappear. Not self evident that he'll be playing this week but perhaps just giving the ankle maximum rest. Pencil must have been lurking there too somewhere as I saw him later on in the session walking around the boundary. Oscar McDonald didn't participate in training and just jogged a few laps. Training consisted of the usual skills sessions. Highlights for me were: 1) Ben Newton looked sharp and must be close to a game with Casey; 2) Dawes participated fully and can't be far away; 3) Trengove showed no signs of any lingering impact from the hit out at Casey; 4) Petracca very enthusiastic and hit up Weed and others on a number of occasions with what's quickly becoming a trade-mark ie low, hard & accurate passes.....not quite Flash like but elements to be sure.; 5) a great camaraderie across the group with a high level of self assuredness ahead of what looms as a massive game against a backs to the wall Pies unit. The other interesting facet was a couple of media outlets being present, including Stevo who stayed for the whole session. So presumably a selection story brewing?19 points

I actually disagree, Thomas spoils the ball and is watching it in flight. The problem with that play is Buggs poorly executed kick, look how much space he could have kicked into for Stretch to run into and take an uncontested chest mark. Inst ead he tries to drop it on his head, why? Stretch had metres of separation from any opponent and a veritable paddock to run into. It boggles the mind really how bad that kick of Bugg's was. Edit: By the way just wanted to give some kudos to Anthony Hudson, who has become my favourite commentator by far (even better than D. Commetti). Doesn't engage in the ridiculous hyperbole that Hamish McGlochlan, BT, Derwayne and the rest of the numpties use as stock in trade these days. Don't mind G. Healy on the special comments either, he's definitely on the Dees bandwagon as others have said on this forum.5 points

I believe one of the commentators on a recent Collingwood game mentioned Pendlebury appeared to be carrying some sort of rib injury/soreness and hence was used only sparingly in the midfield heat of battle. Considering what they did during Jack Watts first game, I would hope we make sure the ribs get a good workout. Perhaps Kent can hit them a few times, he's a solid boy.5 points

Sorry, I couldn't do it last week - I just couldn't do it... CL I50 UPs CPs Score QW Rd 1: GWS -6 6 1 -4 2 2 Rd 2: Ess 5 -15 -134 -4 -13 0 Rd 3: NM 17 12 15 32 -5 2 The obvious outlier (and hopefuly it remains an outlier) was the Ess game. This young team beat NM in every major stat except for the most important one... That CP stat is startling but shows what this team can do in the contest. Stretch is one of our youngest & lightest players with a handful of games. By refusing to duck or dive or in any other way to stage for a free, he put himself far ahead of Harvey, Waite, del Santo, McMillan, Ziebell, Cunnington, Thomas and the rest of Norf - not to mention their perpetually whinging coach - in the character stakes.4 points

Hi all - First time post for me - inspired by the 70s retro conversation. I was a young teenager in the early 70s and I remember John Hartman well. Always felt "safe" knowing John, the Animal and his other mates were pitched behind the goals at the away grounds. The other name I remember was Steve Hartung (I think). A great spoken memory of Steve was at Collingwood in the last round of 1976, when he came up to me during the last quarter and said 'if we win this and get into the finals, we'll arrange for tickets at the end of the game' - alas not to be. Great memories, great times!4 points

Can someone explain to me the hate on Matt this year? I know he has been a problem in the past but his run and spread has been fantastic this year. Hell i overheard crossy and misso at the airport after the game saying that he topped the K's run for the day. His gut running has been so good and he trys so hard to provide an option. I think he has earnt a bit of a run at it the next few weeks. I agree once CP5, brayshaw, ANB and such are all consistant AFL players then Matt will probably go out but right now i think he should be in. I know he turns it over occasionally but no more than Tmac and tyson. After rewatching the game last night i agree Bugg is on thin ice but he was ok and wagner i think deserves another run he showed a bit, his chase down tackle was fantastic. Pedersen, Frost swap seems so obvious but i have a feeling it wont happen....4 points

Great to hear from you Hocko. I have had the pleasure of speaking to you many times at games. You are a real icon of the MFC and lead the best cheersquad we have ever had. I still can remember the way you lead the 'Melbourne..clap clap clap' chant..,always alternating arms in the air. I wish you had of kept that Ricky Jackson jumper though..iconic that was.4 points

Ignorant comment. If Frankston had a VFL team back in the day they would have had the likes of Leigh Matthews, Kel Moore, Peter Knights, Brereton and plenty of others from around the powerhouse Mornington Peninsula. It has a great football pedigree.4 points

Australia (Chinese: 香港; literally: "Fragrant Harbour"), officially Australia Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, is an autonomous territory on the southern coast of China at the Pearl River Estuary and the South China Sea.[11] Australia is known for its skyline and deep natural harbour.[12] Australia is one of the world's most densely populated metropolises . . . Biggest problem with that is that by him saying this it may actually make the Dons ruling look even more likely to be right as he then has form of supplying banned drugs without proper approval. Not sure he is cleaver enough to work that out.3 points

To coin your phrase "Yeh nah." and "Yeh nah." You on the happy pills Debbie Downer. Ah hem! Sorry what's the position he plays again. Oh that's right RUCKMAN. 63 to 38 hit outs against the top ruckman in the league. 25 to 9 hit outs to advantage. And you say people saying he killed Gawny is saying "...such ridiculous things...." You've got this the wrong way around. Goldstein plays the highest game time of any ruckman in the league. He would have rested less than Gawn which means a reasonable amount of his hit outs were against ah hem, Frost. Whereas they would have rested Gawn when Goldy was resting. Plus 3 of Goldsteins goals were from howling umpiring mistakes. Gawny got 18 possessions v 19 against the best mobile ruckman in the comp. When Cox started getting 18 possessions in a game it was regarded as a revolution and all the experts were calling him the greatest ruckman of all time getting unprecedented possessions. Cheer up, there's something positive going on at the moment. Come on you can do it. BE POSITIVE! Try it, you might like it.3 points

This is about a 7% increase on last week. If they keep increasing by this amount he'll be thereabouts with typical midfielders in another two weeks. Brayshaw looks fit enough now but Petracca looks 2-3 away judging by the Casey game. A lot of jogging not a lot of sprinting. I'm guessing gut running defensively is a bit beyond his fitness just yet. Shame about Trengove's concussion. Will set him back 2-3 weeks. His fitness looked ahead of CP5's. It's very exciting to see that it looks like he's made a full recovery from his foot. He will be a valuable in. The way the games going, players with elite endurance over speed are becoming very valuable. Plus our list doesn't have enough players with elite skills. And he will bring that. Can't wait to see all of them out there. Looks like in about 4 weeks time we could have CP5, Brayshaw, Trengove. Plus I hate to say it but on the strength of the first 3 rounds you'd have to have Dawes ahead of Pedersen and Frost for CHF. That'll make a big difference structurally to at least Watts who seems to be playing as the 2nd forward instead of 3rd. Should also help JH.3 points

Your argument is based around Wagner's kicking ability but I'd make two points. Wagner's DE was less than 40% in his two games that were "outdoor" - PA and WB. Grimes was > 75% on both those days with conditions against the Dogs very similar to Tassi. For kicking to be an issue you've got to get it. Wagner did 3 times on Sunday going at 62.5% DE. Let's assume that all his kicks were good. That's three good kicks in a match. I can't imagine you're happy with that. And to suggest "can you imagine what Grimes would have done in those conditions - yes I can - exactly what he did against the Dogs in the NAB Cup, 75% disposal efficiency. I'd seen it a few weeks before. As I've said stats are not definitive but they are indicative. I'd suggest that Grimes offered significantly more AFL IP than Wagner. He'd understand the tricks of Harvey better, he's proven to be a very good third man up. If we'd lost by 2 or 3 goals I wouldn't have been so concerned but we lost by one kick. I think it's far from silly to suggest Grimes would make us a one goal better team when 21 goals were kicked against us compared to a rookie who has never proven himself in any serious footy. MFC were one and one going into the game. It was a pivotal game. Wagner was a big gamble that didn't come off, Grimes the value bet that could well have got us across the line. Like Brayshaw against Essendon it was a baffling selection. It's two fails for the selection committee and it might have a profound effect on our season.3 points

Firstly - the pace and intensity of VFL is not the same as AFL. Secondly - he is having his time monitored so he is not playing "Full games" for Casey Thirdly - it is not so much injury risk - the risk of playing at AFL is around his fitness level - it will hamper the team if he can't run out a game.3 points

Imagine what Oliver will do once he gets up to 85-90% game time! This kid is a freak. Unfortunately though you can't have more than one player who can't run out a game. They may still be effective but it limits what other players are able to do due to having to compensate for their time on the bench. It will make it harder for the team to run out games. Won't be too long though until we see them ripping games apart. I'm looking forward to the second half of the season with hopefully a fit and firing Oliver, Brayshaw and Petracca joining Viney and Max Gawn in the middle.3 points

Watched the replay twice now, Bugg and VDB keep their spots. Wagner is touch and go but my gut says stay, likewise Stretch who will be better for the run in the firsts. IN Garlett (Brayshaw if unfit) OUT Vince VDB to the midfield to get his hands on the pill a bit more rotating with BenKen who will want to put on a show against the old mob. Wagner might be the perfect match up for Howe not having any relationship with him and has the legs to burn the lazy bugger off the other way3 points

I have a lot of time for Goldie; he's much better than either Sandi or Nic Nat. But Max absolutely smashed Goldstein in one-on-one contests between them. Goldstein was certainly effective (arguably even BOG in terms of influencing the result), but only when he was able to get away from Max for one reason or another. Goldstein holds the game records for total-hitouts and hitouts-to-advantage, but IIRC this was against a team that had no ruckman for most of the game. Maxy almost took both those records off him playing against him. Another 3 of both and Goldie could have had the distinction of being BOG in a game where his opponent broke these records in one of the best displays of ruck work of all time.3 points

Bit of love for Greg Stafford then? He rarely gets a mention around these parts, but I think Spencer also improved last year under Stafford's direction.3 points

We lost to Collingwood on QB last year because Roos made the mistake of putting McDonald on Cloke and he kicked 4 in the first quarter. Frost hasn't spent a second in defence at Melbourne, so now's not the time to try it. Dunn really has two perfect match ups in today's game - Hawkins and Cloke. Big lumps that Dunn has the body to wrestle with. He should not leave Cloke's side all day.3 points

Because he wants to discredit ASADA and the overall Dons ruling. What a c, he is willing to throw anyone under the bus he feels like but not yet help the Dons players who he believes he can clear.2 points

One of many things I love about Max's game is when he gets the hit out, often to advantage, he then doesn't stop, instead offering the shepherd or if not a clean possession to his 'rover' then goes in and gets it himself. I can't recall seeing that in any MFC (and indeed in very few others) ruckman since Jimmy.2 points

Beat me to it AF. Haven't been able to find the to-advantage stats anywhere but I suspected he must have been nudging the record. There almost needs to be a further division in the stats. As it is - to advantage where a tap leads directly to a possession. And then some super to-advantage where a tap leads to an uncontested chain. Big max has always shown flashes of creativity with the latter when he's had position and space. The pleasing thing is he's developing the more subtle former and mixing it up with both. We need to get him up for the duel against Grundy. He should have an absolute field day in the tap-work but we just need to be careful Grundy and the Pies' mids don't concede the tap on a shark-hunt.2 points

With less rotations, having players who can only play 65% or less is carrying them. We need to get cp or Oliver game time higher to fit both imo.2 points

Melbournre: Lost at selection. The selection of Wagner, and I hold nothing against him, lost us the game in my opinion. Grimes would have been a far better selection. We were told at the beginning of the year that players wouldn't be gifted games and that consistent performances would be the only thing that would get you selected. Wagner is a rookie. He joined preseason training late because of the timing of the rookie draft and he played in all three of the NAB Cup game, as did Grimes. In the first two games he played 32% and 39% game time compared to Grimes 77% and 75%. He had 10 disposals combined in those games compared to Grimes 29. In the game against Saints Wagner played 68% for 14 disposals at 50% disposal efficiency. Grimes played 59% for 13 disposals at 92%. The stats are not definitive but they are indicative. Wagner hardly banged the door down and at best knocked very quietly. Grimes is fitter, bigger, stronger and much more AFL ready than Wagner and he performed better in preseason. The only attribute that Wagner is better than Grimes at the moment is his kicking skills but if you don't get it that doesn't matter. Wagner kicked it 3 times on Sunday. Grimes is not without his faults and I know many here use him as a whipping boy but whichever way you cut it he's a better player at the moment. If Grimes had been selected and played the game Wagner did on Sunday this site would be in meltdown over his performance. I like Wagner, he's tough but he's not AFL ready. On Saturday he came up against a forward line of Waite, Petrie, Brown, Thomas and Harvey. He didn't have the tools to play that game, he doesn't have the experience and for all he may end up being a good player he is not there yet. Wagner had 8 possessions on Sunday, 62% efficiency. He "did some nice things" but was far from AFL ready. It was a terrible selection. Grimes papers may be marked, he may not have a future but he is at this stage a significant upgrade on Wagner. Where is the "earning games" ethos? This kid hadn't earned them. The FD said one thing and did another. Just dumb. After all this time we should not be gifting players game to develop them, we should be putting our best team on the field to win the game. We didn't do that on Sunday and it's bitterly disappointing.2 points
-
The fact the North player didn't even hold his throat, or rub it, or look in any discomfort says to me he was barely touched. You are right in saying that if it was a favourite son of the AFL then he wouldn't have even been fined. Insufficient force would have been the reason.2 points
-
He is almost no. 1 as fan favourite I reckon. Everybody is on Jesse but it's sort of expected, the respect for Jonesy is huge, and everyone is excited about Oliver. But big Max! There's something about him that everyone wants to get around. He's got the beard, he's a bit crazy, he's hard at the ball, and he's had his run of bad luck with injuries over the years (hopefully done and dusted). If I could get my number on my Dee's top changed it would definitely become 11. Jimmy would be proud.2 points
