Bloke at work who knows Jade Rawlings told me some interesting stuff about Simon Goodwin and the Roosy appointment. Rawlings absolutely rates Goodwin and reckons he is up there with one of the best coaches he's ever worked with, saying he's up there with Pagan, Clarkson and that's not a word of lie. Straight from his mouth my workmate said. I quizzed him on it and said surely not but he said Rawlings absolutely said that and has that high of an opinion of Goodwin and his knowledge of the game and the way he works with players. He also said tactically he is brilliant, felt as though the team could have won more games last year if Goodwin's style of coaching was in practice, players absolutely love him and feed off everything he says. Rawlings also said he applied for the coaching position and was disappointed not to get it and felt as though if someone got it who he thought didn't deserve it he would be annoyed but has seen how good Goodwin is and he is the best man to take over from Roosy. Also said Roosy is a very good delegator and man manager. Culture at the club is the best he's seen it in all his time. Thought i'd just post to all demonlanders a little insight22 points

You seem to forget that one of the main objections some had about her at the time was not so much for her reporting of fact but for the way in which she blurred the line between fact and opinion so that her journalism on the so-called "tanking saga" became editorial dressed up as reporting of fact. Hence, for example, an anonymous person's observation that Cameron Schwab appeared "ashen faced" when Melbourne won its second game of the season was somehow conclusive proof of "tanking" or when Chris Connolly stuck his head into a meeting for 30 seconds in the "vault" and joked about it, she dramatised the meeting into something it was not. We now know of course, that her source for the latter was a disgruntled former employee with an axe to grind against her club. Nevertheless, we're still free to draw our own conclusions. In her latest report on the Essendon saga, she's telling a narrative about evidence given by players at the CAS hearing. Whilst I agree there isn't enough context given about the evidence and how it was introduced, it hasn't been contested anywhere that the players gave evidence on the question of their knowledge, that the judges were "troubled" by what they heard or that separate tests on two Bomber players found heightened levels of TB4 (which is in fact old news). Whether that's enough to create comfortable satisfaction as to the player's guilt remains to be seen but it doesn't mean by accepting Wilson's reporting of what she was told about some aspects of the CAS hearing, that people necessarily should accept her methods and the way she conducted her inquisition into what happened at Melbourne.8 points

Hi all. Haven't bothered to post on the general board for a year or more, as I got tired of the immovable left wing / right wing arguments on here, that go around in circles. I decided to post something today, for those who wonder about the intentions of people who travel to, and retire in the Philippines. I have a mate who lives in Angeles City, about 1hr north of Manila, heavily involved in the Angeles Branch of the RSL, who recently invited me to lend a hand with the RSL medical mission, which is undertaken once a month here. The city has a population of around 350,000, and is well known as the home of Philippines "Bar Girls", and truth be told, there is not much else here as far as western interest goes, apart from sightseeing on the very closely situated Mt Pinatubo Volcano, and Subic Bay, about 65km away. Philippines has some absolutely amazing places to visit, and they all very cheap to get to, once you are here, but that's a story for another time. Today was mission day. It involved around 30 western volunteers. Mostly retired Australians, and Americans, and surprisingly, less than half of them actual returned servicemen, as most of those guys, even the Vietnam Vets, are now patay (deceased, in Tagalog, the local language). There were also around 50 local "volunteers", although that term is used loosely, as most are pressed into service by the local Mayor (there is a Mayor of each different section of the city - hard to explain), and chiefly for political gain, as the local elections are nearing. 3 Australians, including myself, arrived at 6am, at the local basketball court, which, as per local standard, is fully roofed, as it rains here often. After a 2hr setup period, where we were eventually assisted by a few very enthusiastic, and underpaid locals, we were ready to start taking our first "customers" Only one doctor was in attendance. An Australian expat doctor who was donating his time. The 2 Filipino doctors who promised to attend were unfortunately unable to. I'm told its normally hit and miss for the local doctors to attend when the work is unpaid. Today we had none. The nurses on the other hand, turned up in the promised numbers, and you could set your watch by their punctuality. There was even a delegation from a local Catholic College (university) who were receiving credits on their studies, to do a report on a non government, non national, not for profit agency. It was a pleasure to see them embrace the mission like it was a privilege, not a chore. Delightful young ladies. The process involved us cordoning off several separate areas. A Registration area, where volunteers would take down the details of the people being attended to by medical staff. A waiting area - obvious A "consultation" area, for the doctors and nurses, where drugs would be prescribed. A Distribution area, where the drugs would be gathered, as per prescription. A checking station, where the drugs would be compared with the prescription list. A worming station .....and a goddam loud speaker announcer, who I wished someone would shoot. In Philippines, it is normal for nurses to (loosely) diagnose and prescribe, so the doctor shortage wasn't a game breaker for us. Kudos to the Aussie doctor, who was regularly seen to gently berate the nurses, who tend to over prescribe drugs. He was a gem. The drugs were simple stuff for us, the things we would consider everyday items. Various strengths of antibiotics, Salbutamol anti Asthma medications, Anti Bacterial/Anti Fungal creams, liquid Paracetamol, Multi Vitamins etc. But for the locals, they are sometimes unobtainable, as the prices, while relatively cheap by our standards, are VERY expensive when compared to the local salary, of between 50 - 200 pesos per day. ($1.45 - $5.80 per day AUS). Many of the families in attendance would have zero income, and rely on extended family/friends for charity. Every single child was given at least 2 x 60ml bottles of Multi Vitamins syrup, as the local diet is almost exclusively meat and rice, 2 or 3 times a day. Not good. The smaller, tiny kids were given 3 bottles, as the staff could clearly see that they were stunted. The other medications were prescribed after a very brief chat with the medical staff, in a cluster of maybe 12 tables, with no dividers for privacy. The parents/carers would simply sit down and try to get as many free things as possible. I'm not trying to suggest anything untoward here. The majority of parents simply wanted to get medications that they could not otherwise afford. Other services were offered, at huge cost to the RSL. It was my first time to do this, so you could imagine that I was very excited when an older woman, about my age (late 40's) approached me, and asked if i could remove the cataracts from her eyes. She was struggling to look at me, and explained that she only approached me, because she could tell from my size, and aftershave, that I was not a local guy. I had great delight in taking her to a registration table, where a very happy Aussie guy took her details, and began to arrange a free operation, that would inevitably change her life. The woman took my hand, held it to her forehead, to "bless" me, through her tears. Amazing experience. We had 4 standard wheelchairs ready for donation, although none were needed today, which I'm told was unusual. 2 kids were brought forward with severe disabilities, who required customised chairs. I was feeling bad for them, until the aforementioned happy Aussie guy advised me that the RSL had many chairs ready for customisation, back at the local headquarters, a local hotel owned by an aussie guy, who provides 2 rooms free of charge, for exclusive use of the charity missions. I asked about the process, and was subsequently drafted into the customisation process, which is this coming Tuesday. The kids and carers are picked up for free, and transported to the hotel, where their measurements are taken, and the chair built around them. I was warned that volunteers for this process are hard to find, as the chair usually needs to be built and dismantled several times, until a correct fit can be achieved. I'm currently unemployed, after taking a redundancy back in May, so the time is free, meaning no problems there. Two cleft palate candidates were also presented. Their details were taken, and I am told they would be assessed by the Doctor, for referral to either the local clinic, or, more likely, a fully funded trip to India, where the cleft would be repaired. Although the RSL name is used, I was advised that NONE of the money used is from an Australian branch. It is 100% Philippines sourced, by way of expat group donations, private individual donations, or local fund raising efforts. After todays mission, my Filipina wife and I attended the raffle night, at Angeles Cities "Phillies" bar and restaurant, where a small amount was raised, around $120 AUS, by raffling giveaways from the local girlie bars. Drink vouchers, bus travel vouchers, and other assorted bar giveaways. Small money, but as they say, every bit helps, and the guys involved are very passionate about every single peso that they can raise for local charities. It was a wonderful experience, and one that I will repeat monthly, until I can find work. I found it immensely satisfying on a personal level, and found it to be a eye opener, into the lives of people who would otherwise be viewed in disparaging terms by the unknowing. Overall, after 4hrs of consultations, exactly 930 kids were examined, and prescribed drugs, less than half the number I was told to expect. There were a few negative point to the day also, that I am happy to expend on if asked, but I would prefer the first post to reflect the positive side of the day. Actually, they were some of the more interesting parts of the day, if politics is your thing. I apologise for the long post, and also my spelling, which I have run through Filipino spellcheck in parts, but its American English. After we packed up, itself a 3hr process, we attended the raffles, and had a celebratory drink.....or 4. faulty....... I took some pics, but my pc wont allow me to upload, so if you are interested, I have attached the website of the Angeles RSL, who assure me that the 2 million pics that were taken today, would be uploaded soon. http://rslangelescity.com/new/5 points

I'm really sad to learn this. Although not a poster I do get many a laugh with all the drivle on here and Jazza with the woes of milking and trying to give up his smokes was always cause for BBO to admonish and chide. Very sad indeed. It's funny how you have all become so familiar to me. ?4 points

How dare you question me sir? I'm just itching to try out the ban features of this software.4 points

Redleg, I think we all know that none of the coaches etc are part of the current proceedings. But do you know that if the players are found guilty there will be no further action against the staff? I'm not so sure.3 points

I have always said "Guilty as charged" from day 1. The thing I am annoyed about is the club failing on their due diligence in recruiting any player from a club that is under investigation from WADA. It's bad enough if you go after an elite player and get stung. But to go after a fringe player just amazes me. I thought that the club was changing the culture from top to bottom. This could put us back 3 years, not because of losing a fringe player, but all the good work with sponsors could be undone. They will probably have been spruiking we are the "New Melbourne" only to unravel it by an Old Melbourne decision. How Stupid can you get.3 points

You're an asset to this site, great photos. By the way, vandenBerg has the perfect AFL build and physique.3 points
-
As difficult as it is, i try and view the rebuild as only really starting under Roos, in his 2 years so far we have gone from 2 wins 58% to 7 wins, which should have been more like 10 a really strong core of talent that looks like taking us forward, slowly winning back respect and i think we can play finals next year if everything plays out perfectly injury wise.3 points

Just to counter balance the "negative Nancy's", feeding the doubt about Goodwin, Roos' last handover had the recipient (John Longmire) win a flag within two years, in 2012... Just say'n...2 points
-
The club went through a pretty exhaustive interview process with Goodwin, they must have asked the hard questions re the EFC saga and got the appropriate response. I very much doubt they would have based a decision just on the AFL's say so... 'stuie', I think Goodwin may be clear but I am a bit concerned about his lack of judgement. However, even though the Melksham is not a big player I do think the club did the wrong thing in trading out a 2nd round or any pick for him whilst this case was hanging over him. Even in the event that the players get the all clear, the only possible reason to recruit him would be if he wasn't one of the 34. Nobody, no matter how smart or in the know can give assurances on a case that's being heard before an independent tribunal unless it is a Sir Humphrey tribunal which I very much doubt this is.2 points

Well if 10% of what Caro wrote last week is correct then i believe all Essendon Employees of 2012 are in a lot of trouble With holding information about thyio beta 4 is the crux of the whole matter...The fact the AFL tried to sccot around the edges is of no interest to WADA or CAS2 points

Wherever we finish, at least it won't be below Melbourne. Man that club sucks!2 points

It's not just in drugs-in-sport cases that small-fry take the punishment while the ringleaders walk away scot-free. Unfortunately. FWIW, I think where this has the potential to get nasty for the higher-ups is when banned-players turn on the club and coaches through civil prosecutions.2 points

When CAS finds against the players this will lay the table for a lay down misère against those responsible upstream. It's the transgression that keeps on giving !2 points

You may be right LH but the consequences of the players being found guilty and rubbed out (if they are found guilty and rubbed out) will be far reaching you'd think. Let's just say that the above scenario did happen and the players copped decent bans ... we would then expect those in charge at Essendon (at the time) to then start feeling the heat - so where does it all start and finish and who is immune? In the long run it won't just be the players who take the rap (again, if they are found guilty and rubbed out) Those in positions of responsibility must have known what was going on - we're almost certain that the players went off the premises to the anti-aging clinic to receive these hundreds of injections and the "support staff" could have been more involved than we think ... and if the injections involved PED's then the "naïve" card can't really be played by anyone - who is going to believe them? I'm looking at all this from a practical viewpoint without any bias or favour.2 points

I don't normally read this thread because it bores me stupid But......Please don't tell me that clubs won't deal with Essendon because of the appeal........That's just plain silly. Since when does it become the "Principal". That's like saying "It's the Vibe"2 points
-
You just don't get it, do you, little stuie. It's the principal. It's the stupid decision to touch anything from that toxic club, not about which mediocre player may face bans or not, but the position we put ourselves in to be associated with that rabble.2 points
-
Have I missed something? I thought the CAS case involved a WADA Appeal on the 34 Bomber Players. Where and by who, has Goodwin been charged, putting his position at risk?2 points
-
Agree. Also we outsiders have no idea what assurances the AFL has given clubs as to compensation if a club takes a player who gets rubbed out - we might just get another fringe player who may turn out to be a Vanders. If you want to worry, focus on Goodwin's position.2 points

Current Demonland panic level = offseason. Amazing how many here with no idea at all about the inner workings of the club apparently know better than one of the most revered coaches of all time and one of the best CEO's the club has ever had because they've read a couple of articles. FMD.2 points

Wow. This really is a free for all. A few random comments: Andy Maher. He actually lives round the corner from me (Clifton Hill). I saw him today. I noticed that he had a Hawthorn sticker on his car, which I thought was odd for a Carlton supporter. Perhaps it was his wife's car? I can't usefully add anything to previous comments other than to say his use of the word "bunch" is pretty annoying. Dr Turf. Jonathan Rothfield? He is a VERY wealthy man. He clearly does the radio gig because he enjoys it; certainly doesn't need the money. (I can't imagine he'd be paid much anyway.) I had a chat to him at the footy once. Nice bloke. I find him very amusing. Definite keeper!! Steven J. Peake. I'm a lawyer myself. I once attended a mediation where he was representing another party. Here's the tip!! His on air persona is no act!!! Francis Leach. Happy with his return. Tim Watson. He is quite witty. I think he's more suited to radio than TV so his audience isn't subjected to his simpering grin. Mark Fine. He's a classic. He used to dish out vitriolic abuse to callers. My son likened him to Mo from the 3 Stooges. This is quite ironic because most of Mo's abuse (verbal and physical) was directed to Larry & Curly. (They were brothers, whose surname was Fine!!). Further, has Finey softened? A month or 2 Finey purported to quote Voltaire "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it". Given his verbal attacks on callers, perhaps an attempt at humour? Point of order. It wasn't actually Voltaire who said that. However, in fairness to Finey, it is a fairly common misconception. Rex Hunt. He does the occasional interview with old sports stars which are played at sparrow's fart. "This Sporting Life"? Or something similar. I recall that when on 3AW he used to bag ABC radio commentators, calling them the Tobin Brothers. The sponsor of these interviews? Yep, Tobin Brothers. Hello, is anyone still reading this?2 points

Cheers KC! I've been a long time follower of this forum, decided I had to join! A mate of mine actually helps manage this Jaffer-Williams kid, and when I heard there was some potential in Casey going for him I jumped straight on the bandwagon. I'm very excited about the possibilities, we've got a Kennedy-Harris, a Neal-Bullen... would make for a fitting hyphen brigade with Jaffer-Williams on board haha. But in all seriousness my mate thinks this kid is good enough to crack a rookie list, and it's his kicking that will ultimately decide whether he makes it or not. From what I heard they're looking to start him in the development league but he will get his opportunities. I've tried to get as much info as I can, but it's very hard to get a word out of him. It's an exciting though, I love an underdog story and it's fantastic seeing us take a punt on the underdog. Apparently he's lightning quick, very agile and chases and tackles like his life depended on it. From what I've been told they are going to seriously work on his kicking and if he can get it right he'll become a very handy player for us. Promising that he can run distance too, very aerobically sound for an indigenous prospect. Btw, he plays as a small forward and gets used through the wings at times. I haven't actually seen him play live myself but that's the feedback I've gotten about him. Hopefully I'll get to a few games to watch him.1 point

When Milkshake is banned. If Goody proves a baddy, well the club can just deal with it. If they've been stupid enough to bring this upon themselves/ourselves then they can bloody well fix it. I think in some ways the club has fallen into footy groupthink about this. The AFL is about to be taught a long overdue lesson. Can't wait for the chorus of indignation to rise from their bleeding hearts. I can hear however the warbling of the Fat Lady warming up. It's curtains for Essendon...and their numnut players. More fool us. The excuses should prove entertaining at least1 point

Let's just pretend Melksham did his ACL this week if he doesn't play for 18 months we will survive. What James Hird allowed at Essendrug is much bigger trading Melksham was always stupid in my opinion. But it was done.1 point

With every new bit of info that i read, I really cant see this going any other way than a full 2 year ban, less time served. Its an absolute joke to think that there would be any discounts, when CAS have just uncovered evidence of secrets, and half truths. Dots joined. Guilty as hell.1 point
