An article by Tracey Holmes has prompted me to start this thread of support for Adam Goodes. http://demonland.com/forums/index.php?app=forums&module=post§ion=post&do=new_post&f=2 Last night I watched the Magarook Football show. I am a fan of Goodes and support his stand but I never fully understood the issue. From the show I learnt: - Until 1967 Indigenous Australians could not vote. - Until 1967 Indigenous Australians came under the 'Fauna and Flora' Act. It pains me to even try and tell you what that means. But it means they were legally considered animals. I hang my head in shame over that. I now fully understand why words like 'ape', 'zoo', 'king kong' are so devastating for them. - Indigenous Australians are still not recognised in our Constitution (this is in the process of being remedied). - They feel racism differently to that of migrants to Australia because Australia is their Homeland and colonisation was forced upon them. (Before you jump on me for supporting this, I am the child of European immigrant parents so I know exactly how racism feels, for as long as I can remember even to this day. Racism is racism but I can now see how it is felt differently by Indigenous Australians.) - Adams Goodes did not call Australia Day, Invasion Day. Check the transcript. - Adam Goodes did not vilify a 13 year old. In fact he did the opposite. Listen to his comments. Nev Jetta was on the show and he said the team had something lined up to show their support but couldn't say as they were discussing it with the AFL. I look forward to my team proudly supporting Adam. I support my team in this and this thread is to support Adam Goodes. If you can't do that you might choose to refrain from posting. The mods may shortly close this thread and I will understand why. In the meantime, I agree with Tracey Holmes' call: Play on, Adam. Play on!28 points

Great move! Melbourne players to wear Aboriginal colours in support of Adam Goodes Good on Nev, Jeff and JKH.13 points

Things are looking up for next year. Prestia Dangerfield Treloar Aish Omeara I reckon with these blokes on board, we might push for 8 wins next year.13 points

There's something seriously wrong with Australia if Adam Goodes is forced out of his job and Bronwyn Bishop gets to keep hers.13 points

Please take this the best way possible is what I would say to all Dees fans who think that this is unnecessary. Nev and co. evidently think it is and at some point - others don't get to say it isn't.12 points

They say that unless you’ve felt racial or religious oppression personally then you don’t know what it really means. That’s why I find much of the discourse we’re having at the moment so distasteful; and some of the excuses given to justify the constant booing of Adam Goodes are so patently pathetic that it beggars belief. I support the players’ stance of wearing Aboriginal colours in support of Adam Goodes who is a great Australian and without doubt a person of quality which I measure far beyond those who boo him. For several years I have also worn a symbol of my support for our Aboriginal people in honour of those members of the community who on 6 December, 1938 led a march down Collins Street to the German consulate where they attempted to present a petition to the German consul-general, D.W. Dreschler in protest against the "cruel persecution" of Jews in Germany in the wake of Kristallnacht -- the night of broken glass – when the Jews were targeted for killings or bashings, and Jewish businesses and homes were smashed. We know where that led and I wear my black bracelet in honour of Reverend William Cooper who organised what I understand was the only protest in the outside world at that time. For more about Reverend Cooper, see here. This entire controversy is bringing shame on the country and the sport and I salute our indigenous people and Adam Goodes for the dignified way in which they have put up with this tragic episode.11 points

Boo him if you want but have a listen as to why your brethren are booing. - They don't like him referring to Invasion Day on Jan 26th. - They don't like that he singled out a 13 year old girl who called him an 'ape' - They don't like that he won AOTY, seemingly, for that action - In a cyclical argument, they don't like that he has 'made a thing' about being booed. Explore the reasons why he gets booed and most are subtly, if not outwardly, about race. He can call 'Australia Day' or 'The Day We Started A First Penal Colony' anything he wants - he is making a point we want to ignore and don't want to talk about. We should change the date. Hopefully a referendum on the republic happens in the summer in we can have it then... The girl that called him an ape was failed by her parents, not Adam, some have an issue with how MCG security dealt with her afterward but that isn't Goodes' fault. Frankly, if you are blaming him for 'making a thing' of being called an ape while at work, maybe you should picture someone coming to your work and calling you an equivalent epithet (if there is one for you). You don't have to like, I didn't have an affinity for the bloke previous to this mess but I am developing a respect and admiration for what he has put up with for the last few years that is manifesting now. Boo him all you like, but justify it with cold reason and a fair mind and abandon the booing if you can't.11 points

I don't want us to 'agree to disagree' and 'get on with it.' I want people to reflect on why they boo this bloke. If it is staging for free kicks then great, you can stop any time now... If it is because of what he did to that poor little racist girl, or the fact that he won AOTY, or for elegantly explaining why Invasion Day is a torrid time for some people in his community - then we have a problem. And I don't want to let these sleeping dogs lie, I want to expose them - let them bark and then get those that stand beside these racially confused people to listen to them and abandon them. Because, I am sorry to say, there are some good people standing beside some horrid people.9 points

Whether racist or not and for whatever reason. Let me take the high moral ground here and be very PC, whatever the f...that is...the booing is simply childish.9 points

We made a massive advance during neelds time and he was very tempted then, despite the losses he and his family are mfc at heart and always have been, he knocked us back becaus were a serious mess off field, now we have a good situation off field and are getting there on field, the talks with dee-on have been going on quite a while now and seemingly progressing well. Seems he's one who takes his footy seriously and perhaps some of his team mates don't, but gcs have been aware of this for a while and i expect this will happen pretty early in trade week, our first round pick imo will be handed over.9 points

I've had enough too. Well done to the Melbourne players for showing their support for Adam Goodes, a great Australian and a champion footballer.6 points

This is a great idea! Lets take the attention away from our pathetic on field performances by turning our players and club tunic into a moving placard supporting a highly controversial and divisive opposition player!6 points

For those upset that they can't boo a player they don't like, remember that it is the racists who took it away from you. What was once your own private booing habit has been taken over by racists and turned into a symbol of racial disdain. It sucks, but make sure you are angry at the right people.6 points

Goodes is the highest profile, most successful indigenous player in the AFL (perhaps in all Aust sports) Loads of players have staged for frees or slid into players within the rules at the time. See previous posts. Are they all booed incessantly? Brad Green was a classic stager. He pointed out a spectator yelling racist remarks to him to security, as he rightly should have. That she was questioned by the police or allegedly "made the face of racism nationally" says more about the police, media and the AFL than Goodes. He accepted her apology and asked that the issue move on at a presser shortly after. He was made AOTY. Big deal, hardly worth booing about. Was his speech divisive? Goodes is outspoken on indigenous issues because he is a high profile Indigenous Australian. Probably more accurate than divisive. The "spear throwing war dance"... He didn't actually throw a spear. If people are threatened or scared by that, they need to get out more. Note that numerous players have done it since, including Lumumba. The Haka is still ok, right? Interesting to read Waleed Ally write on the matter. He said something to the effect of Australians on the whole being very tolerant until minorities speak out and talk of injustice, then they are effectively told to shut up and get back in their place.6 points

If we look past race issues for a second, what we will find is that this, at the least is a major case of bullying. You have a guy who has clearly stated he doesn't appreciate the constant booing and is feeling ostracised because of it, and that should be enough to make people realise that if it is affecting his mental health that much, then maybe people should just fall in line and accept that enough is enough. Just a little bit of humility needs to be exercised I think. That's my take on it anyway.6 points

It truly is astonishing how dysfunctional the modern Left's definition of free speech is. There is not "some form" of free speech. There is either free speech, or there is not. When you restrict it, you cause more harm than could possibly arise if you were to permit it. "Progressive" restrictions on free speech during the Weimar Republic are eerily similar to the ones we have in place in Australia. And our response is to tighten the muzzle even more. Let them speak so we can shout them down! Just as we are in the Goodes situation. This is a movement driven and controlled by the PEOPLE. And the people will win. Free speech is an important pillar in a liberal, accepting society. Without it, we have no way to differentiate between the good and the bad, what's right and what's wrong. The "right" shall speak, and those opposed shall challenged. That's how we evolve and improve. It's ugly atm, but good will come of all of this Goodes situation. We will all be better because of it. A "boo" is harmless when you think about what genuine, literal racism is. He is still driving around in his sports car, earning a million bucks, living in Bondi. Let's get real here. He'll come out of this a better person with a little more perspective about the complexities of race relations and Australia.6 points

For all the skeptics on here, keep skeptical. I on the other hand sway on the side of optimism for this trade to happen. I question as to why this trade is not possible? It can't be because of past trends as fellow demonlanders rarely seem to get early trade opinions right so why not this. It's reported that he is keen to get back to Melbourne (Victoria I should say). Gold Coast (as a club) are under the spotlight and with all due respect, are very ordinary without the messiah and are likely to lose players to the go home factor (there seems to be more light at the end of the tunnel for GWS than GC). He and his family are Red and Blue through. It breathes all the possibilities of something realistic. Now here's to hoping though if this was to occur, lets stop and think for a moment that if Dee-on was traded to Melbourne (for whatever it took, say a Howe or whoever + pick), our midfield would next year basically then see the additions of Dee-on, Trengove and Petracca. Not a bad nett gain to our starting 22 considering our current plight. Fingers crossed6 points

It is a very complex issue and I don't think simplistic explanations will further our understanding of what really is going on. There has to be a racist element to it which is despicable but I can't believe that everyone who has been booing over the past months is motivated by racist intent. I wonder if it has become a protest movement against political correctness and people having the feeling that they are constantly being lectured about what is right and wrong. People feel like they are being treated as idiots. I don't believe it is fair that Goodes is bearing the brunt of this and I condemn those that boo but I think a deeper exploration of the origins of this phenomenon is needed.6 points

Firstly Peter Jackson should come out and say that Bris bane don't deserve pick 2 for Leunberger . Last year Graeme Swann was on record trying to tell the AFL that we shouldn't get pick 3 For Frawley. Secondly did anyone hear what Justin Leppitsch had to say today he was on record on saying that Brisbane deserve 2 priority picks if there going improve soon and that the only way they will get it is if they lose every game from here. Just a minute didn't Chris Connolly get charged for bringing the game into disripute for a joke he said in a private meeting. If Brisbane don't win another game so should Justin Leppitsch. Brisbane should not get a priority pick we only won 2 games in 2013 and the AFL said no so why should they. Did anyone watch 360 last night they showed the win loss record for Brisbane compared to Melbourne. Brisbane 29W 53L. Melbourne 17W 65L. If they give them pririty pick I will lose it.6 points

I really like Prestia as a player. He's a better talent than Nathan Jones. However, along with Jones, Viney, and potentially Stretch and ANB it represents a very short midfield, especially when the grain has been going the other way. That said, he's an exceptional player and I've always held the view, if you're good enough you're tall enough.6 points

Looking forward to all the people saying they are booing JKH "because he was in that annoying transport safety ad". etc. Eventually people will run out of excuses. I'm really glad our club is joining the push back.5 points

Nev is showing a lot of traits of being a future leader of this club. I have marveled at his maturity over the years. Good job boys.5 points

On the run he can clear 60 metres pretty easily, generally hits his short targets, and Prestia has excellent agility in traffic. Not uncommon for him to dance out of trouble and burst out of a pack. He's got very good burst speed. Very strong in the upper body and wins a lot of inside ball, his clearance work is excellent. I can't think of any contemporary comparisons, parts of his game remind me of Daniel Kerr, his burst from congestion is a little reminiscent of what Rodan used to do at his peak.5 points

Well, if we were hopeful that the booing would come to an end, I think this may have cruelled it... PM calls for an end to Goodes booing5 points

Prestia and Viney are on the shorter side, but the way they go about playing footy makes it pretty much irrelevant.. these blokes aren't in footy sides for their contested overhead marking abilities. Brent Harvey at 172 cm goes alright for 400 games, a flag, 5 best and fairests and 4 All-Australian guernsies.5 points

I HOPE THE BOOING OF ADAM STOPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is my hope. Here is my opinion for what it is worth. To simply label everyone who boos at Adam a racist, is disingenuous and blatantly wrong. To hold this view, apparently in the eyes of some, now condemns me to also being labelled a racist. This has gone completely off the rails, because of the views of fanatics, who cannot see any other view than the one they believe in. The Swans' president's statement is nothing short of outrageous, inflammatory and totally unhelpful in the situation. He could have and should have, simply called for an end to the booing as it was hurting Adam and his family, without playing the race card. Booing has always gone on in football. Carl Ditterich was booed his whole career, was that because of anti German feeljng? Dipper was booed, anti Italian? etc etc. All are booed because of how they perform on the ground, or off the ground, if it gets into the public eye. No other indigenous player is being booed. Adam was not booed for his whole career until a few things happened, he started sliding into players and hurting them, he started playing for frees, he made a stupid young girl the face of racism nationally, he became very political off the field, with what some see as divisive comments. Then a spear throwing war dance, aimed at the crowd, for which the AFL praised him. Remember that a raised finger to the crowd by most players is an automatic fine. Why is it not possible that some people now don't like him or disagree with him and show that by booing? It is certainly IMO far more likely, than he is the one player in the AFL, large sections of the crowd now want to single out in racist behaviour. All that said, I hope the booing stops and he continues to play, as that is the best thing for football and I think, for him.5 points

After years of listening to these sorts of debates, one thing is starkly clear to me. Those who are in the mainstream of society just do not understand the feelings of people who are members of a minority group which has been subject to discrimination and worse in previous generations, let alone in current times. I am in such a minority group though it's not obvious to the casual observer. I personally have not had many problems but it takes very little to be said for me to feel extremely uncomfortable and think of past horrors. Sadly it seems you have to live it to know it. Good people rattling on about free speech and that there is too much PC are of no comfort to me because I know who hides behind them. Free speech is fine, but so is the free speech to tell racists where to get off. I wonder if there would be all this booing if Goodes was an outspoken champion of people with disabilities or abused kids, both issues where our society hasn't exactly earned a gold stamp in the past.5 points

No doubt this blanket booers are all racists line makes you feel good.....all warm and politically correct...you are good people....all the rest of us who don't like the footballer Adam Goodes are bad racist people....it's a simplistic view. Ok now over to you.....there will be a prize for the poster who expresses the most hearfelt righteous indignation at my total lack of understanding and cruel racist sentiments.5 points

The ignorance with the topic is shameful and galling. I think you've made an excellent contribution. Any understanding of social psych - and I mean 2nd year uni level - leaves no doubt as to what the booing is and represents. That people justify it as their right, or worse, that being criticised for it suggests some sort of reverse racism are just deluded tools. Get an education and some flippin' humility. It is also sickening that middle class white men sook about being called names. I am ashamed that my country is so backward. It seems that tolerance is a virtue except when you have to exercise it. Hopefully Goodes has played his last game. Football and politics don't go together. It would be fantastic if we could just get back to football. The game has just become a platform for lefties to push out their issues onto the broader public. Gil needs to go, the job should have always been opened up to outsiders. The public have had enough, they just want to get back to basic football. What a deplorable shambles our great game has become, the people are speaking by switching off in droves. And it's pretty sad when issues like the Goodes issue will create a spike in viewers for a short time, then we'll wait for another issue. This is just political football, due to those in charge, the AFL has pushed us in this direction - where football and politics are combined. So now they NEED these issues. What a joke, [censored] off Gil.4 points

Can I just point out that this is the tightrope I have been trying to walk for days - people from both sides want to push you either way - and of course I don't agree that it is entirely race based. Another gross generalisation is that all booing is racially based whish is the asinine argument that I am seeing everywhere as a way of ignoring all of this talk.4 points

They AFL has approved the ideas Jetta referred to last night on the Magarook Footy Show. http://www.theage.com.au/sport/melbourne-players-to-wear-aboriginal-colours-in-support-of-adam-goodes-20150731-gios2n.html Both Casey and seniors will wear arm bands in the Aboriginal flag colours. The team met during the week and Nev, Jeff and Jay had the final say on. The colours will be worn on the forearm. Nev says what a lot on here feel: "As players, and as a club, we want to clearly show our support for Adam Goodes during what has been a really difficult time for him and his family. "We also want to show our support and help drive a message around educating Australian society on Indigenous culture. Proud of my team and club today.4 points

Australia will remain a racist country while people such as Alan Jones and Andrew Bolt are given a voice in mainstream media What both of them have said and written this week makes me ashamed of my country I just wish Adam had taken that 13 yr old girl up to central Australia and educated her. Made it a reconciliation that the average australian could identify with. If that had happened i doubt anybody would be booing at all. I doubt Goodes will play again. That is sad.4 points
-
That Goalkeeper that said that 'Goodes should be deported' had a subsequent tweet about the previous 200 hundred years of pain that a follower brought up: "Australia said sorry, couldn't everybody move on?" ... To me, this is worse than the 'deporting' nonsense. The country apologised for the Stolen Generations - where government acted as judgment over lifestyle and culture and removed people from their families (in their best interests of course...). That apology isn't the end of racism, and the Stolen Generation isn't the sum of the calamities endured by indigenous Australians. And here we are telling them to put that inflammatory card back in their pockets when they have the gall to bring up issues that are important to them in our Democracy. The 'Race Card' is lazy, boiler plate nonsense that just tries to provide cover for racists to pass off criticism as 'whinging' or 'entitlement'... Well, I reckon the country is strong enough to discuss this - my friends haven't, I think it is about time. No, it is not ok to call someone an 'ape' and yes, I think we should change the date of Australia Day, and I applaud people that use their position to speak about things that are important to them.4 points
-
Aboriginal or not the bloke is booed because he isn't a likable football player. Players like Milne, Ballantyne etc. are constantly booed and they take it on the chin. Goodes gets booed and we cry 'racist'. It's a bit rich to be honest.4 points

Sorry to do this to you Praha, but there is no unfettered right to free speech. That's why laws of defamation exist. And to probably misquote some judge somewhere, you can't just yell "fire" in a crowded theatre, either. Nevertheless, if we want to have a society where we can have as much free speech as possible, society has to accept the responsibility that comes with that. I also note with some irony that the physical act of booing is probably the least articulate form of speech ever.4 points

Bottom line is that we had close to our best 22 in last week, it just so happened that they played like poo.
