It was pretty scrappy that quarter but the club would be pleased with the way young blokes like ANB, Oscar McDonald and Mitch White are coming on.13 points

Went along tonight and boy was it cold! Very enjoyable though, a good win for the Scorps considering they only had nine Melbourne players out there in very greasy conditions. Crowd was a bit better then their last few games also, maybe they should try and play a few more night matches? Anyway, here's my brief overview: Max Gawn: Best game I've seen him play for awhile. Had to play mainly ruck after Jamar went off early in the second term, and I think that actually helped Gawn as he's a ruckman who can rest forward, not a forward who can ruck. Took several strong marks in conditions that didn't suit and kicked three goals when drifting forward to create an option. His tap work was pretty good also, putting the ball down Neal-Bullen, Michie & Harmes throats and he had the better of Hampson. Assuming Spencer has a similar game tomorrow to his last two, then Gawn surely has to come in. Jordie McKenzie: Always tries hard and gives it his all, but he did a couple of classic McKenzie turnovers that resulted in goals or shots on goal for Richmond. Gets plenty of the ball at VFL level, but he's not damaging at all. Said it before, but I would be suprised to see him at AFL level again. Viv Michie: Was busy and got plenty of the ball and ran all night. Another poster mentioned earlier that he doesn't hurt the opposition, and that's probably a fair comment. Would like to see him kick more goals from the midfield seeing as his defensive side isn't top notch, you at least want him to be able to score the other way. Haven't given up hope on him, as he can find the footy. Just needs to work out how to bring his game to the next level. Oscar McDonald: Did well tonight I thought Oscar, was tight defensively and he used the ball reasonably well on the few occasions he got it. Is still getting used to the pace of VFL footy, got caught late in the game trying to take an opponent on, but he defended well I thought and also took a few nice marks in the defensive 50. Won't be ready for AFL this year, but there's enought there to work with. Alex Neal-Bullen: Very good first half where he got plenty of it and he covers the ground better then I realised he does. Second half didn't get it as much, but he still linked up well and he can get the ball on the inside and the out. Think he'll play this year. Just a matter of when. Mark Jamar: Injured early in the second term. From where I was it looked like he copped a knock to the head in a tackle, got up very groggy and went off not long after that. He and Gawn were tag teaming from deep forward to ruck, and Russian was struggling to have much of an impact up to that point. Mitch White: Really like the look of this kid. Beautiful left foot, strong over head and runs well also. We could have something on our hands. Not saying he's going to be a gun, but could turn into a very handy half back/wing in the Josh Hunt type mould. He's one to keep an eye on. Got plenty of the ball and kicked what I think was his first goal in VFL footy tonight. James Harmes: This is a kid that excites me. I'd like to see him get the ball a bit more, but he's one of those players that whenever he does get it, something seems to happen. He was very good in the final term, especially early in that term after Richmonf got to within 10 points. Won the ball a few times on the outer wing and was able to get the ball inside 50 showing some real pace. Also nearly took an absolute screamer late in the game on the same wing. He probably only had it 15-20 times, but he's got something about him. Dean Terlich: Started really badly and was caught out defensively a few times, but from about half way through the third term, I thought he lifted. Took a few important intercept marks and didn't have any clangers that I remember from that point onwards which is probably part of the reason why the Scorps were able to run away with it as comfortably as they did. So yes, all things considereed, it was a very good win by Casey and a good night for footy out in Casey and good to see a few more people at the ground. Also good to see so many people from the club there. McCartney, Rawlings, Mahoney & Tom McDonald just to name a few that weren't there as part of the Casey coaching panel, more so just to observe. Anyway hope tonight is a sign of things to come tomorrow.10 points

King can take a contested mark at 19. He has great hands below his knees for a big man and above average skills. Anyone writing Kingy off at this stage of his development obviously hasn't seen him play or has any understanding of how big who are slight progress.10 points

If Spencer is still on our list after all this time, then King deserves at least 20 years to prove himself.8 points

Combine his shutdown on Barrett over twitter combined with: “From day one I knew I wanted to re-sign, I love the club,” Petracca said. WELL I BLOODY LOVE YOU CHRISTIAN!!!6 points

Yep. If the AFL walk away from WADA i will know longer be a financial contributor to the game on any level.6 points

Over the last few years the federal government has injected upwards of 2 billion dollars into major stadiums in all states. This has benefited not only AFL but also other sports. They have done so on the basis that any teams using these facilities are WADA compliant. If the AFL were to withdraw from WADA then they would also lose the ability to play on all the stadiums they presently play in. If they do take the decision to withdraw from WADA then the other 3 football codes will outstrip them within 5 years and football will become a quaint, backwater, suburban game. Blame Hird.......... or Watts, he gets blamed for most things.5 points

I'm amazed that any Melbourne supporter could have the slightest bit of sympathy for Carlton. They snatched Barras and Wellsy and spent 40 years buying premierships by raping poor clubs (us, St. Kilda) and putting thugs onto the field (Rys-Jones, Williams, Fitzpatrick, Walls, Big Nic, Vin Waite, Buckley, I could go on . . . ). They are arrogant and delusional (1990's attempting to buy Norff, 2012 - "they know we're coming") egomaniacs (Harris and Elliot) and proven draft and salary caps cheats. As far as I'm concerned they can rot on the bottom of the ladder for ever more.4 points

I care because the AFL have handed them a free ride at the expense of the old clubs which were unfortunate enough to be near the bottom in recent years and which may within a few years eliminate the club I barrack for as well as a couple of others I have sympathy for. Couple that with the sycophantic commentary they get on TV (in the NSW region free TV doesn't miss a GWS game) and the absolutely annoying spruiker at their home games who blasts your ears geeing up GWS in a nauseating fashion - I hate them with a passion. Almost as much as I hate the AFL's corrupt admin.4 points

Would love for the Saints to knock off the Weagles. Biggest down-hill skiers in the comp at the moment, with the biggest flat-track bully in the league in Kennedy. Both have good games against weak opposition, yet go missing when they play decent teams.4 points
-
Thats the problem. Theres no framework for tenure; no real accountability. There are essentially no rules for the rulers. In true AFL fashion its all made up on the fly and ratified by sycophantic yes men or those with 'other' agendas. Its the biggest boys club in town. It evades much corporate policing because its effectively a private company. The perfect environment for self serving corruption. They would have been right at home in ancient Rome.4 points

I don't think Gil is motivated by protecting Hird. I think he is acting to protect the league and the brand. The problem is that he is guided, or more accurately misguided, by the AFL boys club. The same bays club that were surprised by the appeal and have little to no time for WADA as they risk the lively hoods of some of their own. Gil seems to have cometely misread the feeling from the general population of AFL supporters who aren't essendon supporters. In essence he is acting with the right intention, but has taken the wrong route. I wonder if it worth getting as many as possible to clearly state to the MFC that we will walk if there is no WADA. Would this make Jackson get on the phone to Gil and tell him not to think about that course of action.4 points

An acquaintance of mine knows Colin very well. He has told me over a number of years, that he is a lovely bloke, considerate and respectful of others. This is consistent with other comments about meeting him at off field events. He has decided to retire which is probably a sensible decision. His career at Freo did not work out. In this case, the irony is that he went from a very poor football club to a very good one. He may not have worked hard enough, however, he was up against it when you look at Freo's list. At Melbourne we seem to have turned the corner and we are seeing some guys who were getting games who are now struggling because of the improved list. However, for many years Col was a loyal Melbourne man during the desperate years of failure of the club on and off the field. He like many others over the years failed to live up to his potential. Perhaps as others say he was a lazy footballer or to put it more kindly, did not work hard enough. However, he is not on his Pat Malone. There were many others in that stable of underachievement. However, does that make if okay to pass snide or contemptuous comments about him. He has already achieved more than most on the sporting field. He has failings like anyone. What satisfaction is there in pointing these out. I don't get it. Would some of the posters on this site make these criticisms to his face. I suspect not. We should congratulate him on his footy career and wish him well.4 points

Some good footballers have played VFL 2's. The club are doing the right thing by Casey by not loading up the forward line with Gawn, King, Jamar etc. King constantly comes last in our running. He's a very very raw athlete. But he's also right up there with the best kicks I've ever seen for a 200cm + guy and can take a grab. No point being too excited about his Development League form but no reason to be negative either. There's no hurry with him. We can afford 1 rookie spot on a project player. I think he's worth keeping for next year and that will be the year where he has to play VFL seniors and perform.3 points

I did some money on that game but FMD, I don't mind too much as it was terrific to watch. Can only (wet) dream about Melbourne playing like either of those teams. Sadly it shows we are nowhere near that standard. Not sure we ever will be.3 points

Good news is Kent was back on the track, doing laps, impressive scar and beard. JKH and Salem didn't do much, Dawes was in hands of rehab guys. Oscar Mc and Hunt also seemed to do short session, so did Tyson and Garland, means nothing these days. Jetta and Viney did whole session and then worked with fitness guys on running, Nev said both were being hammered by fitness staff so they could step straight back in. Most of the drills today were about ball movement again, Roos and Goodwin were very very very vocal today. They actually thought Fitzy had broken his neck at the weekend, did have a bit of tingling in limbs, was impressed by the duty of care shown by everybody, had scans, everything is fine, did whole session. Stood right next to Watts and Bail who were having a goal kicking comp for the prize of a coffee, Watts said nearest the middle of the goal and then proceeded to drill it through the middle from 50, Bail put his through as well but slightly to the left. Any questions feel free, have put a few pics on Twitter Demonpk.3 points

I'm neither making this information up, nor relying on any mates for information. My source is first hand. I have a family member (via marriage) who had to leave our holiday home in the early hours of the 3rd Jan to meet up with Dangerfield and his management. (As both parties wanted the discussions kept out of the media). Suffice to say, my family connection with the matter doesn't get any closer! (More than happy for you to doubt my information. I simply thought I'd share the details obtained at a family dinner on the 2nd Jan.)3 points

round 5. Max King: He kicked four goals in the Development League. He took 10 marks and he played the best game of his life. He probably kicked one of the goals of the year and took one of the marks of the year. Maxy’s heading in the right direction and we’re really happy with his past month. He’s going to put himself into senior VFL selection this week, which is exciting. round 4 Max King: Max continues to improve. He kicked three goals and had another strong game from a marking point of view. We rate Kingy and we’re grading him a little bit harder, because he’s playing against more developing bodies in this league. His past two or three weeks have shown really good improvement. I don’t think an opportunity is too far around the corner for senior VFL selection.3 points

Agree JRU wait we will still be bottom 4 when Carlton passes us. We have been the worst in the Comp for just about 9 years and have seen GWS, Power and the Dogs pass us on their way up. No other team knows how to be cap like us and we continue to be experts at it. Carlton will pass us just like the other teams. I find it very hard to get any enjoyment out of our club. They make being a support such a hard thing to do.2 points

To me , even if forced by injuries, the selectors are at least mixing it up and having a look. The list is still embryonic. Some wont be on it come eos. Now is their time to show a why, or why not.We aren't playing finals this year. Some experimentation is warranted, even if maybe to the likes of Roos inconvenient. On the surface youd expect Fitzy going back frees up Howe to go fwd. Id love to see us deploy a 3rd man up. Beats me that we dont. Still, much about our style confounds me.Our ruck only needs to deny them an ability to win easy hits to their position. If we can make the contests actual contests then mids if any good can shark whatever results. Its about getting the ball. Footy really isnt that complicated. We just make it look so.2 points
