  1. Typical Roos - target players for specific roles and don't get too hung up about numbers. Makes sense to me.

  3. I don't understand how some posters think that St Kilda was playing poker and we blinked. What did St Kilda have to gain from that? Their position is not improved by forcing us to trade for Frost. The only thing St Kilda could have gained was from us NOT picking up Frost. As for Frost, I'll show the analysis a bit later when I get some time, but there is a lot of information showing that gorilla taming key defenders usually only present themselves in their early 20s. A number of successful ones were not drafted until then, since it is a position that requires a great deal of physical maturity to become successful, and it's only then that this ability shows itself. Frost is in the perfect window, where they have shown they can be successful in that role but don't yet have the runs on the board to command huge amounts of attention. I think he's a smart choice.

  4. Mahoney just said there was some interest in Frost from St Kilda. Said the trade allows him to come in straight away and start day one of pre-season rather than waiting the extra month. Said that is crucial for a developing player. Also mentioned that Stretch could have gone mid-20's so it is all about the 'net effect' and we've brought in the players we want to bring in.

  9. The MFC were into Sam Frost for sometime. Acknowledging that previous MFC football administrations got drafting and trades terribly wrong in the past, this regime is different and switched on. They have identified talent and I for one have faith that this time around the footy department has hit the mark. Let's not get morose over this, even if history tells us we should.

  11. Let's be realistic, Melbourne are probably just having trouble coordinating flights so that both Kennedy and Dangerfield arrive in Melbourne at the same time for their grand unveiling. This would explain why things have been so quiet lately.

  12. I could have put this in the Robbie Flower thread, but i didn't want it to get "lost" in the trade arguments etc. A work colleague's brother use to play high school/junior footy with Robbie Flower (Bob). She brought in this photo he had of the team, with them all in it. She said the boys (those still alive) from this team, or some of them are catching up for a beer and a yarn in honour of the great man in the coming weeks. His nickname back then was "Jelly", for obvious arms and legs reasons. Said he was an absolute gun back then, with a body like his that went against all normal VFL conventions. Anyways thought you guys might be interested in seeing it and hearing of his relatively unheard of school nickname of 'Jelly.' Feel free to share it with any other Robbie Flower admirers:

  14. Two years ago we tried to be smart and thought we would let Hanath slip through to the PSD. We were then outsmarted by Freo who snapped him up ahead of us. Probably not a good idea to let the same thing happen again, if we REALLY wanted him.

  15. So much sooking from so many who have no idea what might have been really happening! Have some faith - maybe St.Kilda had a trade on the table for Frost that GWS was tempted by. The problem is we had 23 and they had 40 and 53 and that's all the currency there was. If Frost turns out to be a starting 22 KPD replacement for Frawley, we're laughing.

  16. who is our best forward ? The bloke who played 15 games in 3 years ? who is our best defender ? The bloke who played forward the majority of the year ?

  17. Pfft, what does Roos know? Unless he has at least 100 posts on Demonland, his list management credentials mean SQUAT!

  18. By God there are some morons on here this time of year. We wanted him, we paid what we needed to. We obviously rate him. Could be one of the best athletes on the list straight away. Has a body ready to go. Getting a KPD through the draft requires a 3 year wait till they are ready to match it with the big boys. We lost an established KPD and got ND3 we paid ND23 for a young KPD and got 40 and 53 back. The deal has real potential. 2 years already invested and his value is still low. We saw Frost > players at ND23. Were there any better KPDs on the market?

  19. So he played 16 secret games this year ? What difference does it make where a player was drafted ? That is a single point time and bear no reflection to their actual output - Fyfe was pick 20 and is arguably one of the best footballers in the league - Scully went no 1 and ewwwwwwww...

  20. Just cant believe how lucky MFC is with all the draft experts we have here who would have done a so much better job than Roos, Viney, Taylor, Mahoney and Lamb.

  25. Shut up shop now. 2&3 for Brayshaw and Lever and I'm happy. Garlett and Lamumba improvements on what we have, Stretch on the cheap, yes we didn't bring in any experienced mids but we had a crack at it and no one bit, no point crying over it. It's all about incremental improvement. We need a couple more wins next year which will hopefully come and maybe there will be a tipping point where we are a desire able destination- bring in a gun FA next year and the best mid available with whatever pick we have next draft, trade or delist the remainder of the "scarred" players and were a new team.

  26. Amazing posts...club is damn if they do & damn if they don't! Club picked up a defender with games under his belt who can be further developed to be a 10 yr Kpp to replace frawley! The same posters would be sinking their boots into the club if we let him go & picked up a spud @ 23... Stop looking @ the glass 1/2 empty!

  32. You could sum it up like this: we got Frost, 53 and Billy for 23 plus Frost can now begin training with us and we can target the first live pick in the PSD. Alternative was 300 pages on DL, over whether Saints go for Membrey or Frost in the PSD and no chance of enticing a good player to go into the PSD.

  33. Mahoney telling us to be patient. Seriously? How much patience is required following this club. Watts staying, big deal. I'm normally an optimistic person but this lack of action during this trade period has set me off.

  34. I'm normally a very optimistic Melbourne supporter.. But unfortunately I just can't see any big improvements next year on the back of this trade period so far.. Looking at this years ladder.. GWS finished with 2 more wins above us.. they have added Griffen, Patfull and have a handful of picks in the top 10 to go with their current list of guns. Then above them? Brisbane.. who arguably now has one of the top 3 midfields in the comp. The gap between them and us IMO will grow and we will be lucky to hold off Saints for 17th spot end of next year. The thing that worries me most, is keeping current players in the red and blue & making it an attractive destination for free agents.. We need to start winning and climbing up the ladder.. I just can't see it happening.

  38. This was written in Angus Brayshaws AIS diary in Europe. ''My thigh was still a little painful so I sat out this morning's training session, which was at a local soccer field about 15 minutes from our headquarters''. ''Because of that I trained with the rehabilitation group, which today was run by Jake Lever, who continues his comeback from a knee reconstruction at the end of last year. Jake led the way with some core work and boxing, which was pretty tough - even tougher considering Jake almost represented Australia in boxing at the 2012 Olympics''.

  41. Essendon have sent pick 62 to GWS for Giles. Why on earth do we spend 5 years developing Spencer when you can bring in a much better, mature ruckman with a pick in the 60s? Talk about clogging a list.

  45. Whilst this is neither here nor there, I thought I'd say it. Why all the love for McCartin? I find him extremely underwhelming as a modern day forward. He has limited attributes, his goal kicking is questionable and looks to be extremely one-dimensional. I'll be absolutely stunned if we picked him with either pick. Don't know why there's all this love for him.
