  1. Everyone is still out on the turps celebrating last Thursdays Intraclub win.

  2. perfect example of the club always being 'damned if they do and damned if they don't' around here nobody ever stops whinging about us being broke and losing games but it's nothing but disapproval when a scheme comes along that is specifically designed to make money and win games

  7. I asked my 2nd wife if she would like to celebrate a very major milestone anniversary by going to the Commencement dinner. %$#&&^%$@*&%$$!^%&. I guess I'm not going. This is going to cost me big big time. Why don't I just shut the F \$$k up.

  8. Who's offended? Some of us simply want to see some effort on a weekly basis. As I posted yesterday mindset is free, as is application and a never say die attitude. That's all some of us are asking. Come years end regardless of wins/losses if I think they've had a real crack I will donate to their cause. I have already donated to Demon Heartland on my membership allowing kids who wouldn't normally be able to attend games for different reasons the chance to do so.

  10. I don't think I've ever read such rot on Demonland. This idea is as old as the hills and was part and parcel of the usual fund raising for years. TBH I didn't realise it had been dropped. It's pretty simple really. The Club is merely offering those that want to a chance to contribute. If you don't like it don't do it. But getting offended by it is dumb. Everyone supports in the way that suits them. There is no obligation, we are not paying taxes, there is no penalty for not participating so if you don't like it just ignore it. But all this rot? Give me a break.

  11. This thread truly amazes me. The club is trying to raise money. We are far behind most clubs in the finance department. It is not compulsory. Put your hand in your pocket or don't as they case may be. End of story IMO.

  12. First time posting in this great domain. I dont like the pledge to win promotion , I think it gets away from the core issue of supporting the club regardless of win or loss and sends the wrong message.

  13. If it wasn't you wouldn't post here. It's to each his own, there are some that will, there are some that won't contribute to this, but as I said earlier no one will think any less of those who don't or more for those that do. This is simply a way for the club to flush out a few bucks from excited supporters and it's no different to what any struggling club would do.

  14. No, that's incorrect. Love for club isn't a monetary thing. It's standing up for your club around the watercooler, participating in radio shows, social media and how much time you spend thinking of the club. The amount of time I spend on this website regularly reminds me I'd be in the top 1% of passion for Melbourne supporters. Live and breathe it, however I don't donate to these things. Anyone who thinks that $ invested is an accurate display of love for the club is so misguided. After all who's sacrificing more, the 100k businessman giving 1,000 bucks a year, or a university student paying 200 a year..

  15. So pick the biggest odd-ball nutcase, who accosts Prime Ministers in the street with no respect, and portray them as mainstream?

  16. This is a pretty shaky platform for playing the old "Who's a real supporter?" game, DOF. "Grandstanding", "Childish and pathetic" - climb down from your dunghill.

  17. I know history recommends caution and even pessimism in making predictions about Melbourne's 2014 chances, but there is something stirring that makes me feel that the Demons will be this year's bolter. So my prediction is we'll win rd 1 and finish the 2014 season in the 8! I think we have the perfect storm of hunger, experience and talented youth, favourable draw, exceptional coach and several stars about to bloom (Watts, Howe, Trengove) and re-bloom (Frawley, Clark, Jones).

  18. Heaps of people would love this kind of scheme, ET. It makes people feel as if they're directly incentivising the club to win, and means the amount they pay is directly proportional to how the club goes. It wouldn't surprise me at all if some members asked for this.If you don't like it, don't pay. Really can't understand why you would take it so personally though.

  19. $20 a win x 5 wins = $100 Looks ok to me! Now If I can just work out the five games I can double up with the bookies and cover my outlay. Dees win and I end square.

  20. I once took an american visitor there (had a friend's two spare memberships - yes I have a friend who's a member of the floreat pica whatever) and took him into their members' stand. A group of kindly looking elderly women told me if I opened my mouth again I'd get a knitting needle in the eye - and so would the 'septic'. And that was during the reserves. True story.

  22. I'm not sure about making the 8, i'd love if at the end of 2014 mfc were no longer considered easy beats, the players no longer considered jokes, even if we don't play finals we could be a team that other teams don't automatically pencil in as a win, and start building towards something.

  26. They are trying to 'milk it' ? You seem to have forgotten that our club is in danger of extinction and sends out teams every week that have to deal with a heavily underfunded footy department. Also we are getting closer and closer to the salary cap being irrelevant which means if you are a poor club you are totally cooked. We need every cent we can get our miserable hands on. If it's victories you want you better believe the importance of the role of $$$$. PS nobody is forcing you to do anything, it's just a fundraiser aimed at those who give enough of a stuff about the club to cough up some more dough, o an amount of their choosing. Fir dinkum this attitude of 'the club owes me' that some people have is downright absurd. We are supposed to be SUPPORTers.

  27. As far as I'm concerned this is a Cam Schwab sort of scheme. No sooner do we get a whiff of hope around the club than they try to milk it. I've kicked in for memberships for long enough - I'm owed some victories, not this rubbish.

  28. I have an idea, how about we pledge to give 25 or 50 $ per win. And the club pledge to give us 25 or 50$ per loss??

  29. If there was a ladder for late 80's, 90's and up until 2005 we would've been quite good. We had our moments in the 90's where things went wrong but those were the days that if you had some talent on your list and ability to coach things could turn around pretty quickly. The last few years with the introduction of GWS and GC and the monumental increase in footy department spending at a time where a number of clubs including us still aren't financially secure has made it hard to turn things around. I know he left in pretty bad circumstances but Bailey with proper sports science, training, recruiting and coaching budgets very well could've made it as I coach I believe. If he succeeded then there would've been cause for the 'even made it at the dismal dees' line. If Roos turns this club around it will be a huge testament to his ability as a coach. But it will also likely mean Peter Jackson has done a fantastic job as CEO, Todd Viney in list management, Jason Taylor in recruiting and Dave Misson in sports science. The point about Daniher not getting another senior gig is interesting but I would've thought after nearly a decade coaching the Dees he would've been happy with the West Coast job for a time and then probably felt once he settled in to that job there wasn't much point going for another ride on the coaching bandwagon. I do think Roos should be considering Brett Ratten for the senior assistant and successor job. And Voss or Matty Knights could be worth an interview at least if they had strong interest. But Ratten was great as our midfield coach. And took a limited Carlton team from a mess to the 8 by developing young talent. Plus I think the recruiters he had working for him were pretty average besides from getting the number 1 picks somewhat right. If Ratten had a weakness it might have been his tactical knowledge but that would be improved by working under Clarkson and I think Ratten would be receptive to Roos' philosophies on defensive play, stoppages and ball control.

  30. Its no big deal. We went out and won the 1st. Good, but the tigers looked a different outfit yesterday. We need to have a decent outing and not lose by too much, but if the cats are cruising, then go for it. At this point Im looking to St Kilda Round one and hope we play a few cards close to the chest. None the less I will be scaring the dogs barracking.

  31. Dannihers biggest failing at Melbourne was not being able to reload and improve during the "odd years" of 1999-2003. For whatever reason he could not extract consistantcy.

  32. Jamar has in the past had some really high hitout numbers - I have never seen however stats showing how many of these have been (used) to our advantage. I suspect very few have been. Now how much of that has been due to his hitout technique and how much related to a poor or poorly trained and drilled midfield I cannot say. I guess (if Mark actually makes an appearance) our dramatically improved midfield could answer that question. But the other huge disappointment especially since his AA season has been an almost total absence of any contribution around the ground, as a marking option or as a link, or as a resting forward.

  33. so the guilty verdict comes through yesterday. and we wait for sentencing. Eddie everywhere goes on radio saying how much the Collingwood football club is against violence etc. then says said player who is guilty of a very violent act is fine to keep training and that they will support him. what a disgrace.

  35. Our first hit out was reasonable but the Tigers were asleep and we just got passed them. Although the longer the match went the better we seemed to get. I think a lot of that might have been confidence and coming to terms with the fact we were winning and should keep playing well. Today Collingwood are asleep and the Tigers up and firing in terms of intensity and whilst the game got close in the 3rd quarter they kicked away. You could tell Richmond weren't giving much against us because Anthony Miles was there best player. Today Cotchin, Deledio and Martin stood up. Biggest concern for Richmond is key defense. Rance has good days and bad, Grimes is injured, Astbury i'm not convinced on and Chaplin is really a third tall. North. Let's wait and see a little while. Personally I reckon their young talent is good not great and their experienced talent is missing a bit as well. Wells, Petrie, McMahon, Harvey and even Nicky Dal, there's a front runner aspect to that. Scott is empowers young players to go out and play well and have a go. Not sure he's a great tactician though. In trying to change tactics over the preseason for more defense they might end up shooting themselves in the foot.

  37. Those myki's are pretty solid and sharp. Wetting it wont do much but if it had a sharp edge you might be able to cut someone with it. Sounds like fighting stupid with stupid but the other problem is the cultural shift. If you whacked someone out the front of the local pub years ago someone would've whacked you back and half the chance the coppers would've whacked the whole lot of you for the troubles. These aren't fights anymore with men squaring off toe to toe. It's just an assault usually on the innocent who can't fight back. Don't get me wrong I don't want a return to brawling but at least you knew what was coming. You don't hear the phrase do you want to take this outside anymore, you just hear a punch in the back of the head. This might upset people and we do live in a nanny state in a lot of ways but I'm with the government's ban on MMA due to it's nature as cage fighting. I don't see the need for it and the need to produce more trained and physical young men.

  39. To show real improvement we need to consistently win against lesser sides (Suns, Giants, Lions, Saints, bulldogs), win at least half our games against medium teams (North, Essendon, WC, Adelaide, Port, Tigers, Magpies, Carlton) and get beaten by no more than five goals by the elite (Geelong, Hawks, Swans, Fremantle) and maybe sneak one or two wins from them. That would be an excellent year and put us in the middle of the eight. There will be ups and downs of course and we will not achieve that level of consistency, but I have high hopes of bottom half of the eight. We do after all have a very favorable draw, and medium levels of improvement will show up in wins and better percentage quite quickly IMHO.

  40. Rivers was drafted in 2002 and played 150 games for the Melbourne Footy club....He was a mainstay in our back line for most of that time and filled in forward when needed.....I don't know why posters bag and degrade servants of this club when they leave......I guess it's a lot easier watching at the ground or in front of a TV......It must just make these posters feel a lot better about themselves......

  41. They won 10 or 8 more than us. Did you watch him tear Geelong new one in the final term of their big come back. Or smash us. There's a difference between a limited footballer and a crap one. Daniel Cross is a limited footballer. He'll turn the ball over or chip is so slowly at times this year that you'll tear your hair out. When you have 1 legitimate senior midfielder in Nathan Jones then you work with your limited player in Moloney to get the best out of him instead of losing him for nothing. I also agree with you that Rivers will struggle to get a game at Geelong. I think if they are winning they'll keep him in the team but the heat will be on him if they lose games. But the main point is we had a percentage of 54% last year. Two state league players finished 3rd and 4th in our B+F. It's a joke how bad our list was and how devoid of players capable of making some impact at AFL level regardless of the limit their talents had. Col Garland played games on a sore ankle late last year. He's now out after having a clean up a few weeks ago. Jack Viney battled like a beast in games right in the guts. He's behind the 8 ball this year after starting in rehab to not over do him. James Frawley missed games last year and we were forced to play Cam Pedestal at full back who had Kosi kick 3 goals on him. My point is there are plenty of negatives for losing experienced half decent players if you don't replace them. It's why I was pretty excited when I saw the direct correlation between Vince and Sylvia.

  42. Spencer for this year and the Ruckman for five years time I doubt is at the Club at present. Current alternatives will be, over the Hill by 2019, Injury prone or I doubt will make it as a leading Ruckman. IMO That leaves King and the kid has been there five minutes so who knows with him.

  43. Would be handy having them, however, I maintain that it's far more important having a fit and firing midfield. And by that, I mean about 15 or 16 potential mids fighting nail and tooth for limited spots in our best 22. Hogan/Dawes and Frawley/Dunn/McDonald are fine for now. Garland will be back hopefully round 2 and Clark can wait for now. We're not playing for finals just yet..

  44. Loved it when the commentators were making excuses for Richmond because the likes of Jack Riewoldt, Reece Conca, Ivan Maric and Daniel Jackson were all missing - as if we had a full side. Cracked up when they were scratching for more missing players and finally came up with Ricky Petterd.

  45. On account of the fact that we know how valuable and consistent Cross and Vince are, a truly exciting thing about tonight was that Dom Tyson and Viv Michie showed why there are big wraps on them. The MOST excitingly unexpected recruits for me though were JKH (obviously), and Georgiou.....looked like a 100 gamer, and cool as a cucumber. A BRILLIANT pickup for peanuts. And for all those berating the likes of Spencer, Strauss, Nicholson et al, WAKE UP TO YOURSELVES!!!!!
