I'm a tad unsettled about the lack of love for Mitch Clark atm. Trade? Mitch? The only player who gave us all a glimmer of hope last year? The most feared player on the field? Okay he's injured, but it'll all come good. I, for one, cannot wait for his return.11 points

Let's be clear about a few things. First of all, this whole Shaw and 10 for pick 2 thing is absolute nonsense. It's nothing but a speculative piece of garbage written by Jay Clark, who knows nothing about football. There is no way in hell that any side, from Melbourne to Hawthorn, thinks Heath Shaw is worth that much. Not one. Secondly, this talk of trading Clark to Fremantle is insanity. Clark showed at his peak last year that he can be a totally dominant FF. We can't just put the burden on Hogan to be a star from Round 1, and we need to make sure we have the leadership and direction in the forward line to help Hogan develop. Clark is integral to our push up the ladder. He goes nowhere.10 points

Seriously, anyone who thinks that we are about to trade pick 2 for a 28yo with issues with pick 10 thrown back is on drugs. Where is the benefit of that? Pick 2 is there for us to secure quality. Shaw being 28 with issues is worth a 3rd or 4th round pick, and if we trade for Shaw we will use an appropriate pick. Interesting commentary about GWS. With Buddy, Boyd could well become pick 2. If this is the case we should take Boyd and trade Clark to Freo as previously suggested or keep Clark and trade Boyd to Freo. We should be able to get two A Grade Mids, one young, one old for Boyd.8 points

Was told that he was gone before the last round has spoken to five and six clubs and thinks he still has a lot to offer body is good. Passion is sport and science and wants to stay in that industry. said it would be the perfect scenario Did some practical work with the Western Jets. Wallace said he sets the standard in regards to training and professionalism Wallace also said he would fit a Paul Roos type player. Said he is hungry to play and would go anywhere. Has been training hard already. Wouldn't mind going to a club to help young players out and even win. Wallace also said Cross is one of the best trainer he has ever seen in his time. He is also sets the standard and very team orientated. Wouldn't name the clubs he has spoken to out of respect and said the talks have been positive. Wallace just mentioned after the interview that he would be the perfect fit for Melbourne.5 points

I have no objection to giving pick 2 to the Pies if they want to trade for it. Not for Shaw though. Pendlebury would do the trick I would think. I do like in the Mahony interview he has said that they have identified a few players in the league who they rate as being worth pick 2 and are going to see if anyone bites. Sounds like they have their limits pretty well set and aren't going to jump at the first offer being thrown at them.5 points

Cale Morton entered the AFL with only slightly different build than Nat Fyfe who was top 5 on ground Saturday and is 22. Jack Gunston is only 21 and has a super skinny build but was second best on ground. Can't deal with the no skinny kids attitude5 points

Gee. Not often do people claim watching Melbourne games makes for "an enjoyable afternoon".5 points

Col is a required player. The Ros wants to keep him is because he can build a game plan around Sylvia and and couple of other class players including Watts, Howe and Clark. We have too few of these types to let any of them go. There is no doubt the Col has not maximised his talent but the team is better with him in it. What we dont need is to lose another senior player from the locker room and big body to get in a teenager. Will he get us into a grandfinal, probably not, but between now and then we need to hang on to some older heads and bigger bodies to be competetive.5 points

You can tell the season is over when the "real" journalists to on holidays, and you have clowns like Jay Clark trying to convince us that the dees are offering pick 2 for Heath Shaw. Sure thing Jay. Is that after we secure Jake King with Nathan Jones?5 points

You may think that but you're quite wrong. It was the view of the AFL that we shouldn't get a PP. Vlad has overseen such a powerful and successful competition that the AFL have had a chance to support basket case clubs who in normal circumstances would now be in the hands of the receivers. You can snipe at the little issues all you like but the reality is he's been exceptionally successful in growing the brand and he's saved our club.5 points

So will Caro now retract her scathing critique of Dusty and proclaim him as the reformed prodigal son? Doubt hugely that she'll continue her attack on him now that he's back in the fold. Rarely a harsh word to be said about her beloved Toiges.4 points

Demetriou has done a terrific job as CEO of the AFL and overall has helped the MFC. Negotiated a series of ever-increasing media deals over the years. Has taken the hard long-term decisions introducing GC and GWS into the competition - yes there is pain now in his time for gain over the long term. More fans, more members and a generally more even competition with close exciting finals series and GFs and a variety of premiership winners from all over Australia. He didn't start the tanking investigation but he wrapped up a messy power-play created by Adrian Anderson and where is he now? AD handled the extremely difficult Essendon saga well overall - and that is not a problem of his making. I'm sure the AFL would re-draft the GC and GWS slightly differently if they had the opportunity of hind-sight, e.g a low end age limit on the free agents they could draft and mini-draft picks must be traded for player, but overall the compensation we received for Scully has left us in a better position IMO. So it's down to the state of the Olympic stadium surface over his reign? It is time for AD to move on IMO but he'll do so with a very successful legacy.4 points

Why should she? A 2 year deal is a limp endorsement of an alleged star.....all be it with a mountain of baggage.FWIW, I am not sure what the Tigers have done wrong with Martin other than re sign him for less than the original offer. Martin and his associates have shot themselves in the foot with their handling of this whole episode. His manager should be deregistered.3 points

A big thank you to all those who contributed to Demonland during the past season and also to everyone who posts here and even to those who visit but don't post. We value your contributions and ongoing support - especially to Nasher who keeps us going on the technichal side, our moderators whose task is often thankless - especially so when we go through a season such as the last few we've experienced. Particular thanks to our regular contributors, Whispering Jack, George on The Outer, The Oracle, JVM and KC from Casey. With the exception of KC they've often had to report on games and subjects that have been difficult to write about in 2013 but I reckon the coming ones will be more uplifting and exciting stories than those gone by in recent times. As always, we're hoping for a bigger and better season in 2014 and are always looking out for new contributors who have something to say about the mighty Demons. If you want to contribute an article feel free to contact me via PM. Cheers & thanks again.3 points

If we give pick 2 to Collingwood for Heath Shaw I will legit lose my mind. Even getting pick 10 from them aswell is not worth it. He was prone to snapping at a successful club playing for Melbourne might kill him.3 points

I think it's clear that it is more about application, competitiveness and hardness at the contest rather than build. Look at Josh Hunt, 100KG and soft as butter.3 points

Okay....one more point on the 'skinny' debate and I'm done. Gunston's build and Fyfe's build is no way like Gysbert's or Morton's - look at the size of their thighs, that allows them strength in the hips. Secondly, Fyfe and Gunston are elite runners and extremely, extremely fit! Thirdly, their attitude is one where they work hard to establish space and rarely get caught. Morton and Gysberts? Pffft! Gimme a break!!3 points

Stop overrating him. He's good at ground level for a behemoth, but still has a heap of work to do there. He's not as good as Sandilands is at ground level. He uses the ball well by hand. His foot skills are ok for what you expect from a guy of 208cm but he needs to work on his goal kicking a lot. His marking is promising but not outstanding. He has to make sure that his current European holiday that he's on doesn't take away from him making big fitness and strength gains before next year. And he needs to stay healthy. He could be the next Sandilands or he could be the next Robbie Warnock.3 points

If we trade, pick 2 for Heath Shaw and pick 10 that's just about it for me. Having said that, not even we are that stupid.3 points

Shaw is not worth a top ten pick. Pies are keen to offload him, frees up cap space and removes what they consider to be a distraction. Clubs should play hardball with them. If pick 2 goes to the pies it's only because Beams is coming to us.3 points

IMO gold coast suns will get very heavily involved in the race for Shaw and more than likely land him, Bluey McKenna has past connections to Shaw and Collingwood, they have stated publicly they will be in the market for an experienced hard running half back who has played serious finals before. Heath Shaw fits the bill perfectly and they have plenty of trade options to get the deal done.3 points

I have skipped a bit on this thread. But an acquaintance of mine friend a dyed in the wool pies man. Told me that the problem with Shaw is he suffers from ADHD. The medication required to stabilise his condition is a banned substance. Any clues. When was coke banned?3 points

Jay Clark has made that up. We have enquired about Shaw and we have pick 2. That's enough information to make his article plausible.in his eyes anyway.3 points

Jay Clark thinks we could give up pick 2 for Heath Shaw & Collingwood's pick 10. I don't like the idea of giving up pick 2 for a 28 year old who doesn't actually play as a midfielder.3 points

There is no way known GWS would not pick up Boyd with pick one or trade that pick unless Dustin left some of the good stuff for them.2 points

AFL Draft, Trade, Free Agency, List and General News Options for this story Tom Petrono has also said that Col Sylvia has just gotten back from his holiday, and will meet with new coach Paul Roos this week and hopeful come to a new agreement to stay at Melbourne.Sylvia, a free agent - has attracted interest from several clubs, including Brisbane, Carlton, North Melbourne and Essendon.2 points

I'd happily do this if it was Jay Clark we were trading to Freo. I'd also take a bag of feces in exchange, we'd be getting the better end of that deal.2 points

Is there a way for clubs to research what band of comp pick a player would be worth. Surely as a club you would approach the decision makers and try to get an indication. I would suggest that anything around the 20 mark would reduce our efforts to retain Sylvia.2 points
