  4. It’s universally accepted that Colin hasn’t lived up to his potential, and it’s fair to say probably won’t ever meet those expectations. At some point we have to accept the player he is and forget what we hoped he would be. 157 games is a pretty good sample size. That said, he was still one of our most productive midfield rotation players this year. I’m not sure we’ll easily replace his 19 touches, 4.5 tackles a game. Allied to that is his one of the few players who generates run and carry along with consistent inside 50 numbers. We were horrible in those areas, and have been for two years. If Colin goes, we lose a productive member of the team. The upshot is that we may get something approaching reasonable compensation, free up cap money and it will create opportunity for someone like Rory Taggert to play some AFL footy.

  7. The club made enough exceptions to have LJ at the club. He didn't train the same amount, wasn't measured by the same criteria, didnt have to do a lot of things that regular players had to do or adhere to the same rules that others had to adhere to. I get that LJ had special circumstances about his upbringing, language, culture etc however, (and its not popular to say this) the latitude we gave LJ was thrown back in our faces. And it polarised the playing group. 'why could he get away with things that we are not able to' I don't care what people say, when you allow certain players to do things or treat them differently then it becomes harder to enforce a 'group think' about training loads, expectations on performance, commitment etc. Its human nature. Let alone the fact he threw it back in the faces of those he trained with and those that supported him.. There is no going back. Its a romantic notion because he had sublime skills, But move on. It would be a disaster.

  9. I have never posted a rumour based post as I have no connections to the club or players but I was told of one today that really excited me. Tom Rockliff has agreed to terms with the MFC and will wear the red and blue next season and beyond. I heard he and his girlfriend have become home sick(she is from benalla), and Tom is sick of the off field crap going on up there. My source is my mates sisters best friend is the girlfriend Don't shoot the messenger, but I thought I would put it out there for all demonlanders to know

  11. I almost lost my eldest son to Geelong - because of the brilliance of Ablett - until Jurrah burst on the scene. Hearing my boy yell out "Juuurrraaahhh" every time Jurrah went near the ball was magic for a Dees dad. Every move he made was breath-taking. It would be a very, very long road back to AFL footy. And to be honest I can't see him doing the hard physical yards or coping with the even tougher psychological battles in order to get back. But I would go to every Casey home game just to see him play. If he made it back onto the MCG for a home game (Queen's Birthday v Pies) it would be sweeter than mum's iced vo-vo biscuits.

  13. I like Howe and my preferance would be to keep him. However, I wouldn't hesitate to trade him for a young midfielder like Adams, especially if that meant we kept pick 2.

  14. The statement made was "It's amazing how perceptions of how good a player could be lead to people turning on their own" I'll go one better - Considering the high draft pick Colin was and the immense talent he has shown ( all too rarely) I have a firm perception of how good he SHOULD be and this has led me to forming a strong opinion that he has not made most of the talent he has. You may call it turning on your own - I call it honest appraisal.

  15. Its not a vague concept - in most cases with players, it is a nonsense concept. How many times did I hear over the journey how Beamer "bled red and blue" yet when the going got tough ( and yes we all know the major differences between Neeld and himself) did he dig deep for club that apparently he would bleed for ? I have marked Col harder than any other footballer at Melbourne because in my opinion he is probably the most talented player we have had on our list tfor many years and he has constantly underdelivered. This is not turning on him because if you recall Colin himself said two or three years ago that he has been less than consistent in his output and although he has been more consistent since it is marginal.

  17. It's amazing how perceptions of the vague concept of "bleeding red and blue" clouds people's judgments of players. It's especially sad when it leads them to believe a player has "done his absolute best" when the bloke has shown on numerous occasions through his actions (incidents) that his commitment to preparation is lacking, as is his ambition.

  18. Fell in love with him as a player when he did a role on Buddy a couple years ago, was great. Also on QB against Cloke this year was great. The efforts he showed and passion was inspiring, especially when he cracked them at a team mate then dumped Cloke on the ground in frustration. Was fantastic. Keep working hard Col, your a gem

  20. Probably because he got 30 touches almost every week for Casey and played more games than Gawn and Hogan and still didn't win the B+F. Magner's games looked good on paper but the Liston and even more tellingly now this B+F indicates to me he just wasn't making anywhere enough impact. I suspect even at VFL he'd be looking like the Matt Priddis of the team where as he needs to look like Sam Mitchell when he's in the VFL if he wants to be any chance of AFL.

  24. So on the way out of Perth airport I said "enjoy your break mate, I look forward to seeing you kick a few more again next year", I believe his mother had come to pick him up who was with him, he replied in a very nice manner with a "thanks mate".

  26. Frankly, to trade these first round draft picks (Bleese, tapscott, Strauss) now for little or no value makes no sense to me when they have be appallingly managed and coached by us. These guys ARE elite athletes, otherwise they would not be first rounders . It is simply not possible to go so early in the draft given the very extensive and sophisticated sports science testing they need to go through to even just be considered. Given the hand picked and advanced coaching panel we are now assembling under Roos, I'd be very certain that they will create a very big upside with these guys, and get the best out of their natural abilities. I would also throw in Howe ( clearly a great talent but under performing and inconsistent; Colin Sylvia - ditto; Max Gawn - an emerging young talent who will get better with age and great coaching; Fitzy- an out and out star as a school boy, but sadly cruelled by injury and serious illnesses since he was about 18, and now that at the age of 21 is now starting to show his schoolboy form. All these guys will flower under great coaching and great leadership. To trade any of them now would be throwing away a really big upside when their trade value would be mediocre at best. I would have also put Gysberts, Bennel, and yes, Moton in these categories too. If you look at the trade values of three quarters of the PA list this time last year (if you don't believe me read their supporter sites from August/September last year as I have done) you will find that many of those playing finals footy this year were vilified and written off on those sites; many advocated "trade them - but we won't get very much for them" sound familiar? I say keep our high picks and show them how to play. We will get far better value out of them that way.

  28. I think Howe is a must keep. He's an X factor player and they can come up big in finals (when we hopefully one day make it). We definitely need to find some genuine mids but X factor players are just as important. I do hope he can become more consistent as he matures a bit like Stevey J did. He started out as very much a forward who could do the mecurial but often went missing, to being a very consistent forward/mid.

  29. There was a lot of blocking going on, a lot illegal. I think Roos will teach Howe the best way to deal with this.

  30. Limitations notwithstanding, some damn continuity would help. He seems to suffer at least one serious contact injury a year. The most number of games he has played in a row is seven. His sequence goes 2, 5, 4, 7, 3, 1, 2, for 24 games over 4 seasons. At the rate he's going he's going to be completely wrecked by 25, if he makes it that far. He got a very hard time for his "education" early on, but he's taken more than his share of physical punishment for a borderline player I think.

  39. People that cry about this all these years later are so full of shite, everyone was on the Jurrah bandwagon when we took him. He was a fantastic get for the club at the time and progressed a lot quicker than most in his first 3 years at the club. Jurrah had a far higher ceiling than Rockliff. Rookie picks are for speculative players.

  40. The leading votegetters for the Gardner-Clark Medal:- 1. Jesse Hogan (82 votes) 2. Evan Panozza (73) 3. Max Gawn (69) 4. James Magner (67) 5. Tom Couch (57) 6. Cam Pedersen (53) 7. Mitch Gent (48) 8. Luke Tynan (43) 9. Neville Jetta (37) Other awards:- Jarryd Drew - Rising Star Mitch Gent - most improved Jake Best - coach's award Luke Hill - captain's award Tim Smith - respect earner Aiden Lindsay - best & fairest (development league) A fine effort from both Hogan and Gawn who could easily be two of the MFC's most important players for the next decade. Mitch Gent enhances his prospects for this year's draft. And I don't know why James Magner doesn't get more opportunities at AFL level.
