PLayers come and go but our club has been here for 150+yrs.This present bunch of players though is doing their best to kill our club. I am sick of hearing about how hard it is to play for a club like melbourne when we are so bad. Sick of hearing players like Watts say " I wish we had leaders like Joel Selwood". Sick of the media laughing at us like they did on two radio stations I heard today Jack Viney showed the rest of them today how to run and how to attack a contest. A first year player. There were a few others and Nate Jones gives his all every week but I am so over this pathetic bunch of soft pea hearts. Port adelaide have done an amazing job of dragging themselves off the canvas when no-one wanted to coach them, no players wanted to get drafted by them. Same as the Bulldogs. Looked pathetic for a year and a half but now playing with passion and fire. And us? Well frankly our club will be lucky to be here in 3yrs time. Our players have escaped so much scrutiny its a joke. 'Oh we don't like cameron Schwab, oh we don't like Chris Connolly, oh we don't like Mark Neeld. If only we had some leaders, if only this if only that. My kids are done. Melbourne suck. I know of at least 3 other families where the kids have abandoned our club. And why wouldn't they? Where is the hope?Where is the spirit? Where is the passion? I couldn't care less if we dropped 20 players from our list at season end. Just find me some more like Viney who has a go week in week out. Some hard asses who play with passion and hardness. If we don't we will fold.11 points

9 games. Caretaker is a job no-one should take, the way fans expect the undeliverable. He is a proven coach of men and we will have him or Eade or Williams and I am comfortable with that.8 points

I'm totally anti Clark playing as a ruck, however, there is merit to it if you have Clark and Fitzy as your ruck/forward combo with Gawn as your first ruck. BUT, this cannot happen unless Clark spends an entire pre season doing proper training as a ruck, and getting actual coaching, to know how to approach the role in a bigger capacity without his body blowing up. Ruck is the most specialist position on the ground and can lead to serious injuries if done by someone with little experience. It's our duty to ensure we don't throw him into the role without preparing him for it properly. Realisticaly though, Mitch Clark at FF is a 50+ goals a season forward, even with an ordinary midfield. He should be playing FF with Dawes at CHF and Hogan as the third tall for at least the next couple of years to ease Jesse into the role. Hogan will probably need no easing or protection, but lets not screw him up like we did Watts and actually give him support and take the pressure off him to play FF in his first year.7 points

To a large degree I agree with you on Neeld. I've been pleased at the response of the players I've spoken to who are disappointed (that he was appointed) rather than bitter. But I've spoken to others at the club who were worried about him as early as the first few rounds of his first year where he had alienated the senior players and had failed to unite the playing group or engage the younger players. In actual fact he divided the playing group and it's why blokes like Moloney and Rivers wanted out. They'd had enough. I don't know if the reason Moloney left, or at least his initial conversations with Neeld, have been stated here but suffice to say Neeld was not a leader of men and a very poor communicator. Moloney's tweet when Neeld was sacked was immature but totally understandable given that exchange. Neeld lacked the one thing a coach needs - an ability to communicate with players. That's the primary reason he failed and a simple due diligence would have established that. We didn't do it. As for Schwab I think to a large degree you are wrong. You state that he "did a lot of good things" but I can't think of them. If you like the blazers, the bugler and white board Wednesday and list them in your "good things" then you really do accept mediocrity. He took over when Gardner and Harris had found us a home and established links with Casey. He was CEO as the Gutnick inspired Bentleigh Club finalized but that had been nurtured by every CEO and Board since Joe instigated it. They were the meaningful things that happened on his watch but he didn't "do" them. His failures sit in his inability to manage an organization. He didn't act as CEO but invited the Board to participate in all forms of management. He pandered to them as they controlled his position. It led to all forms of trouble including a divided football department culminating in Bailey's departure. Even after Bailey he instigated the most flawed senior coaching appointment process and result I've seen. It's hard to think of a coach that has done more damage to a Club than Neeld and many, me included, questioned the process from the beginning. He appointed or reappointed Bailey, Neeld, Connolly and Prendergast. Sadly not one of them could call their time with us a success. He set up a structure where 4 FD people reported to him as CEO leading to a lack of cohesion and purpose. As Jackson said "it's not a hard fix, it's just not a quick one". I don't disagree that over the years we've never established enduring competent CEO's or Boards. But given his length of tenure, his experience in football and the opportunity he had (which far exceeded any previous CEO) it's hard to come to any other conclusion than he was a compete failure. The same results in the 90's would have seen us gone. You say ". The reality is that it took more than Schwab and Neeld to produce the train wreck....... This is the culmination of a decade or more of poor leadership at the club and can't be sheeted home against one person or one board. ". You're right, you need to include the Board in producing the train wreck. Over 5 years of Stynes/McLardy and 4.5 of Schwab this club is worse now than then, perhaps the worst it's ever been and that is saying something. They had a wonderful opportunity to progress us but instead we ended up in AFL administration. They need to take responsibility for what they did and we need to recognize it and move on.7 points

I think we should try and keep Dawes out of the ruck as well, as much as possible. Let's learn from Collingwood's mistake.5 points

186 represents a pivotal fork in the road for our club, and one at which we evidently took the wrong path. Cam Schwab should have seen his last day at Melbourne that weekend, but instead the players were ignored and Dean Bailey was axed instead. Would everything have gone swimmingly had we taken the path untraveled? Probably not, but one cannot deny the importance of that day. It was itself a product of a poor decision, and represents the first in a long line of similarly terrible choices whose repercussions can still be felt every time we look at the lopsided scoreboards and half-empty stadiums that take shape every time our disenfranchised players take the field. 148, 108 and 122 are all products of the same awful decision that led to that fateful game at Kardinia Park against Geelong.5 points

No, he went about it in the quickest fashion he could... you have to get rid of the cultural flag bearers first & quickly & thoroughly,,,, or otherwise the young kids will carry that sick torch the same way that they learnt from the original cultural flag bearers. Neelds job was not finished... he would have finished it this year & the new culture would have started to show itself in 2014... this is why some transitional mature players were imported from successful environments. to hold up the cultural vacuum from collapsing back into the old ways.4 points

A good start would be Jackie boy in the room this morning with PJ and New Pres "Hi Jack Come in sit down Thanks for making this so easy for me Jack really apprecciate it We will not be discussing your contract until after the season OK? In that time you will play for Casey We need to be sure that you are a good fit for our team going forward I' m sure you understand that the party is over and only players who demonstrate that they want to play for the Dees will be offered contracts Great thanks for stopping by See you at the end of the season"4 points

Sylvia is one of our most combative and consistent players and really seems to care about improving oyr performance. Yesterday he had 8 clearances and 16 contested possies and worked hard the whole game. People bemoan his poor disposal but he had noone forward of centre to kick to because we had 2 loose men in defence. His 6 inside 50's would have looked much better with a Clark or Dawes up forward.4 points

well said for the life of me I just cannot understand it. I know every bloke reading this would give his right one to run out there for the red and blue, why does 90% of our list not give a damn? Why is it seemingly only us, and why does it perpetuate year after year even with the list/coaches/admin constantly being turned over? Why does a player like Jeremy Howe just go stale? You can talk about the ineptitude of coaches we have had, and the disadvantage of being in a poor financial position, but the main problem is what you identify - the attitude of the players. It's not that they are just no good, half of them were high drafts and they were for a reason, we have seen all of them at times play glimpses of good footy, even sometimes together, such as the second quarter today. WHY why why why can't we have 22 blokes on the field giving 100% every week as is the non-negotiable standard at basically every other club? Does anybody in the rooms at full time give the players a bake, stand Jack Viney up and ask the likes of Watts and Howe to explain to him why they did not try as hard as he did today? Is it considered a no-no to call players out these days, are they so petulant and protected that if you upset them they will leave and go on TV bagging you as a coach or what.. what is the story? Others have mentioned the incident where Hill kicked a goal today after just running past an almost stationary Watts, I could not believe my eyes. Why isn't the video of this shown to the whole group at the next team meeting and the question asked of Watts 'who do you think you are with this rubbish?' that is what would happen if someone at Sydney or Geelong or Hawthorn did that, every player makes sure they don't get caught with those kind of efforts because they will absolutely hear about it from the coach and the leadership group. For us nothing happens, and that creates a situation where others think they can get away with it too. When are we going to have coaches and leaders in place that make these demands and actually enforce them, it is driving me insane.4 points

Magner - 51 possessions on the weekend. I know it was against the bendigo gold but 51 pos is fantastic no matter the opposition. Most weeks he has above 30 possessions. Often has high numbers of hard ball gets, high number of tackles, clearances. From reports last season, he was first to arrive at the club every morning always doing that extra bit. I have mentioned this before, but if we are after mongrel players, magner has that. On paper, Magner and viney doing a lot of the grunt work, jones, trengove, toump, grimes and the like doing most of the outside run work with jordie tagging actually looks pretty reasonable. Of course i dont think magnet will solve all our problems, but I think magner and viney should be trialled together for a number of weeks. not that theres long left. Thoughts?3 points

Would like to know too. No doubt, we'll delist him at the end of the year only for him to be picked up by a club like the Swans whereupon he'll then become a regular in an elite on-ball brigade.3 points

Jack Watts wasn't a loose man in defense he basically stood next to the Goal umpire and was like a seagull feeding on left overs. I can't believe our coaching staff allowed him to do this, it was the worse bit of coaching I have ever seen. I have no issues playing a loose man in defense with the role to stop goals and contest but Watts wasn't that he was there purely to receive the footy and try and set up attack. Considering the ball went over his head 20 times I don't think it worked. Saying that though every time Watts had an option to compete for the footy he didn't. We need to keep Col Sylvia, the reason behind this is Jack Viney is 19yo, we can't expect him to bash and crash every week he needs support, you have Sylvia, Jones and Viney in that midfield you have options. For Col to leave now we are stripping away someone from what is already a bare cupboard. Watts on the other hand we can cover if he goes, Clark, Dawes, Fitzpatrick, Hogan, Howe, Gawn. The club should pull any offer we had on the table to Jack and tell him we are waiting till the end of the year to see if he has a spot.3 points

I'm another MFC supporter who has stuck up for Jack countless times throughout his career, but given what he has said in the press over the last week, his effort today was thoroughly deplorable. Today he was again laconic and avoided contests all day. He's not a combative player, but has more tantalising attributes than Sylvia of '08-'10. I think he's been dealt with harshly by our club on a number of occasions. Mismanaged is probably a better way of putting it. However, if you're going to demand high standards of the club, you must deliver yourself on gameday. If you don't, you won't get support from me. Talk about 'cheek'.3 points

Quite true, I've followed the club for many years and this would have to be the worst bunch of players we have ever had at the club, they lack basic skills, basic accountability and any semblance of heart. I can't understand why it's happened the way it has, but it's like the perfect storm, where all the conditions have aligned to create the perfect [censored] team. It's as if they are all waiting for someone else (Jack Watts in particular) to get up and show them the way and win some games for them. There are few among them that deserve to put their hand out at the end of the week. I've stuck up for some of them in the past but not any more, players like Tapscott, who my wife sponsors, need to get more of the ball or get a new job. Howe, who I sponsor, also needs to show that he is more than a one trick pony and that he can actually help Melbourne win a flag rather than just winning mark of the year. There are others that sit back and wait for something to happen, and we all know who they are that are never going to be as good as we thought they would be. How must it grate on Magner when he works his backside off, gets possessions galore, but still can't get a game when Rodan and Byrnes and Nicholson and Blease seem to get one without any form at all. I've been saying this all year. People were crying out for Mark Neeld to get sacked and maybe they were right to do so, but that doesn't hide the fact that it is our players who are ultimately responsible for anything good or bad we see on the field. They ARE killing our club, and the worst thing about it is that they don't even know (or care) that they're doing it.3 points

C&B, assume you picked this up and listened to the commentary. I am in no way defending Jack Watts as I thought he was below par yesterday, but a couple of points....on the second one, he was running back with the flight and palmed it backwards to Terlich, Terlich probably being afraid of taking the Freo player's legs out or being caught holding the ball did not dive at the ball, Hill reacted quicker and passed off to Ballantyne, so perhaps not wholly Watts' problem As for the first one, HIll had two players tracking him apart form Watts, who both missed him, what would your reaction be if Watts had also gone to Hill and left the man inside who got the ball back, Jordie Mc was supposed to be marking him but got blocked, Matt Jones was coming across and Trengove from the other side so 4 Melb players let Hill score All too easy to sit in the commentary box or behind a keyboard and pass judgement2 points

I'm filthy on the club and Watts' coaches. they've pandered to this prima donna for years. I know he's been dropped occasionally, but nothing has really ever changed. Watts' weak efforts lost me years ago, but why did the club put up with it ? I heard young Mitch Wallis interviewed after the Dogs win. He was asked why he'd been out of the team a month, or two earlier. He stated that he "probably wasn't hard enough". Watts' efforts have infuriated me for 5 years. But he's been allowed to get away with it. I would have left him at Casey for a year if i had to to get him playing the way i demanded. Watts has never been coached properly in my opinion.2 points

I was talking to an employee of Freos footy department last week. I asked about Melbourne. He commented that many in the industry believe Neeld and Misson have put too many endurance miles in their legs in the pre season. Upshot is a list of players who are sluggish over the first 5-10 metres. I mentioned Blease as a refute. He commented that endurance training is good for the really quick players, but if they aren't explosive to start with they'll end up sluggish. Trengove clearly in the latter category. With some high draft picks it feels like blind faith waiting for them to come on. I don't feel that way with Trengove. I think he will be a very, very good player. His awareness is already there, just needs to stop running in the shallows.2 points

Just had this emailed to me. A good chuckle if you've not already read it. My Essendon Lie By James Hird (To the tune of American Pie) [intro] A long, long time ago I can still remember how Shane Charters used to make me smile And I knew if I had my chance That I could make my players dance And maybe they'd be stronger for a while But 2013 made me shiver With every paper that was delivered Barrett on my doorstep I couldn't take one more step I can't remember if I cried When I read about how they proved I lied But something touched me deep inside The day my fiction, died [Chorus] So bye-bye, to my Essendon Lie Took my Bombers to the top, and built up our pride And my good old boys injectin another peptide Singin' "No-one will ever know that we lied No-one will ever know that we lied" [Verse 1] Did you write the book of push & shove And do you have faith in Demetriou above If the AFL tells you so? Now do you believe in 9604, And how drugs save your football soul And can you teach me how to inject real slow? Well, you know that I was in love with Dank Since I saw him injectin out the back We both beefed up our tans To show off to all our fans I was a lonely rookie coachin' buck With a Brownlow medal and a million bucks But I knew I was out of luck The day they found I lied [Chorus] I started singin' bye-bye, to my Essendon Lie Took my Bombers to the top, but then our hamstrings died And my good old boys injectin another peptide Singin' "Hope they never find out we lied Hope they never find out we lied" [Verse 2] Now for ten games we've been out on our own With hidden texts on my mobile phone But that's not how it used to be When the rumours came that we werent clean When in truth we were as high as James Dean But the drugs came from Dank, not me And while me, the king, was counting cash ASADA found my hidden stash The courtroom was adjourned Until the ASADA verdict was returned And while Sam Newman read a book from FARC The media stakeout in the park And we injected in the dark The day our dreams died [Chorus] We were singin' bye-bye, to my Essendon Lie Took my Bombers to the top, but no-one knew why And my good old boys injectin another peptide Singin' "Do you think that the media has spied? Do you think that the media has spied?" [Verse 3] Helter skelter in a winter swelter The wheels fell off in another belter Eighth place now and falling fast Another player lying on the grass A hamstring sprung trying a short pass Another player on the sidelines in a cast Now the premiership air is sweet perfume While Meatloaf sings an awful tune Wed all love the September dance Oh, but well never get the chance 'Cause if the players try to take the field Will ASADA refuse to yield? Will we ever really know what was revealed The day my dream died? [Chorus] We were singin' bye-bye, to my Essendon Lie Took my Bombers to the top, but then David Evans cried And my good old boys injectin another peptide Singin' "ASADAs looking and Id better go hide ASADAs looking and Id better go hide." [Verse 4] Oh, and there we were all in one place An entire season lost in space With no chance left to start again So come on, Jobe be nimble, Jobe be quick Watson sat On the Couch real quick ('Cause Roosy is the Demons only friend) Oh, and as I watched him on the stage My hands were clenched in fists of rage No angel born in Hell Could break that Roosy spell And as the ratings climbed high into the night To light the sacrificial rite I saw Roosy laughing with delight Thats when, they knew, I lied He was singin' bye-bye, to my Essendon Lie Took my Bombers to the top, but our success was a lie And my good old boys injectin another peptide Singin' "Now our premiership dreams are fried Now our premiership dreams are fried " [Verse 5] I asked my girl who hates the Blues And I asked her for some happy news But she just smiled and turned away I went down to the AFL store Where they all loved me years before But the man there said that finals, we wouldn't play And in Bay 13, the Bombers screamed The Magpies cried and the Hawks all dreamed But not a word was spoken The servers all were broken And the three men I admire most The Demetriou, The Dank and the Charters Ghost They caught the last train for the coast The day theyd found Id lied And they were singin' bye-bye, to my Essendon Lie Took my Bombers to the top, but then our hamstrings died And my good old boys injectin another peptide Singin' "I cant believe they found out we lied About ever having seen a peptide [Chorus] They were singin' bye-bye, to my Essendon Lie Took my Bombers to the top, but then our hamstrings died And my good old boys injectin another peptide Singin' "I cant believe they found out we lied2 points

I know that ... the old perennial is Richmond's choice of Tambling at #4 over Franklin at #5. (The Rules of this thread also forbid me from suggesting Martin or Rohan over $omeone else!) I can weather failed recruiting of a few picks. But not 75% of our list over the last 8 years. Clearly, some of the players on your list and mine might be an OK bottom-end of a team in the 8. But they're not top-end or even middle of a team aspiring to be in the 8. I also wonder about 'spine theory' versus 'engine-room theory'. It seems to have started from as long ago as Daniher. We seem to have a put lot of resources (and subsequent misses) into building a premiership winning 'goal-to-goal line' or 'spine', and not much into the midfield engine room. That our total good midfield after 8 years of a multitude of first-round draft picks is Nathan Jones (plus Jack Viney now) is a disgrace. I'm getting tired of the continual requirement to move on up to a dozen NQR players every year. The recruiting has just got to start getting better and more strongly emphasise a hard midfield.2 points

FFS Jones, Frawley, Garland, Trengove, Howe, Dunn all played that day. Howe has currency, Dunn whilst not being great serves a purpose, Garland has stood up all year, Frawley was playing well again under Craig till he got injured, Trengove wasting my time telling you about his worth, Jones gives his all for the club 1989 I believe it was Meth Coast kicked 1 goal in an absolute belting to the Bombers, the following year they played in a prelim, the year after they played in a GF before winning two of the next 3 flags WYL you need to think about things before you post don't throw the baby out with the bathwater, 10 or 11 of their Premiership sides played in that defeat by Methcoast2 points

That's true we can't but we have to get rid of the payers that will never change, the ones who we've been waiting to mature/come good; players like Dunn who will never be any more than ordinary, Watts who will never be any more than a tease. The players on our list that have no talent or skill and no amount of development or training will ever improve them. Blease can run that's about it, Nicholson can get the ball but mainly turns it over, same with Terlich, he needs to learn that this is AFL not Country League. Rodan was finished well before he came to Melbourne Byrnes is spending his time on Superannuation. I've talked about some of the others and there are some I haven't mentioned but they are simply not up to AFL standard and they can't break in to the worst side in the Comp. Great question, many claim he's cooked but he was still more effective and creative with the footy than most of his team mates today. I think we can read from Bartletts speech that our senior players are going to get far better treatment than has been shown recently and rightly so. So like it or not I'd say the new era begins with Davey being offered a 1 year contract, the decision will be his to go again or retire.2 points

Creating a winning culture that doesn't give up on their mates is what it's all about. He should have a week off and if his knee is structurally fine, then he should play VFL finals. We want hardened guys and we have a rare chance of winning the VFL comp against Geelong and Hawthorn (Box Hill). Yes it is only VFL, but have a look what losing each week is doing to the mentality of our senior players.2 points

Why did Viney stand out so much from his teammates today? Because he ran at 100% for 100% of the game. Either to get to a contest or provide an option. It was actually embarrassing how much harder he was running than any of his teammates. That was an atrocious game. We allowed them to go from end to end like it's a training drill at times. At best, we stalled them by getting some numbers back but then we simply allow them to stroll around kicking and handballing to each other under no pressure whatsoever. We were lucky it was windy so they missed some targets and allowed us to get our hands on the ball. We miss tackles because we aren't running hard enough and are usually flat footed trying to tackle opponents going at 100%. We don't create spaces and options for our teammates because we don't run hard enough. Our opponents get 10 metre spacing on us pretty much every time they lead for the ball because we don't run hard enough. There is an opponent loose every time the other team comes out of defense because we don't run hard enough. We contest our one on ones meekly because we are not running hard enough. We can't break away from stoppages when we actually do get our hands on the ball because no-one is prepared to run hard enough to provide the option. For those who can see positives with this club I have great admiration. I will keep going but I've pretty much given up (reckon I lasted 5 or so years longer than the players who have represented the club). Our problem is not the talent as much as the fact they simply refuse to give the minimum levels of effort required. I am embarrassed to be affiliated with a group of people that seem to care so little about something that has provided so many of them with such a special opportunity.2 points

I know I harp on this, but seriously annoys the s#%t out of me every week. MANNING UP IS NOT STANDING 10 METERS FROM YOUR MAN!!! Being there to stand the mark when your opponent takes an uncontested mark is not helping. Deprive the ball holder of available go to options, and we may actually start to force a team to make "unforced" errors. Since the Neil Daniher days we have been a shocking defensive unit. Better still, while we seem to do nothing about opposition uncontested possession, we can't/won't run to give options for our own players when we do have the ball. Is it a lack of of motivation and desire to work together as a team? Surely it can't be fitness, unless Dave Misson has lost whatever mojo he had working with Sydney?! Don't get how, from one coach to the next to the next to the next, not one of them is pushing hard running and defensive pressure? Or is it just a super soft playing group who are happy to accept the losses at the expense of truely running their guts out and leaving everything on the park?. Or are they just not smart enough to get the message? Sorry for the rant, just get so an annoyed watching the same lack of competitiveness week in week out.2 points
-
I'm really annoyed about this negative game style Craig is employing. Flooding the backline, refusing to play Watts up forward, always with just one or two or no forwards. Who cares if we lose by 88 or 130 points? I'd rather play to be competitive when we finally get the ball. We had some good ball movement today that resulted in nothing because there was nobody to kick to. It saps the confidence from the players and is completely pointless. Craig is doing himself no favors with this rubbish.2 points
-
I really think that analyising Craig's coaching performance in 2013 is pretty limited and silly. I guess the best way to explain my point is - would Roos, Eade or Choco gotten better performances out of this list this year with the unavailability of players and poor form??? Craig shouldn't be judged solely on his 2013 Win loss record - he offers just as much as the other 3 IMO2 points
