  3. I had a bit of a chat with Jai at the Demon's family day earlier this year while we were waiting in line for the Scenic Railway at Luna Park. Wasn't really sure who he was until he signed my daughters footy. I was struck by what a nice bloke he was. I had a bit of a Seinfeld moment with him though when I asked if he remembered the Big Dipper. He said he did. I went on to tell him how I rode the Big Dipper quite a few times in my day, what an awesome ride the Big Dipper was, and how nobody mentions the Big Dipper much now since the "accident". He looked at me kind of weird and the conversation kind of finished up. Didn't occur to me until much later he was probably too young to remember the ride but not too young to remember Robert Dipierdomenico.

  4. HIghlights package of pederson looks good - solid body, can mark, can ruck, good thinker, can run and can kick. Good cheap pick up if we get him.

  6. This raises an interesting concern. Players leaving unsuccessful clubs to experience success (perhaps at lower wages) will give their old club (which probably needs all the help it can get) crappy picks, while players leaving successful clubs (usually lured by money) will give their old club (which already is ahead of the pack) even more of a head start.Worrying.

  8. Jamar can ruck. Much better than Martin. So can Spencer. Gawn will probably end up being better than all of them. Martin is a so so ruckman that is rubbish elsewhere. I hope he gets a chance to move clubs because he doesn't have a future at Melbourne.

  9. Lion heart or crazy? I was at Lavington for the pre-season practice when Schwarz was making his 1st or 2nd comeback. He came on for the 2nd qr playing in the 2s and proceeded to throw himself around with reckless abandon. I couldn't believe what I was seeing , he was crashing packs , takin low diving chest marks and taking on defenders. He kicked 3 goals that term but I wanted someone to remind him that, not only he was in the 2nds, but the regular season was still weeks away and he should settle down. Needless to say he came out and popped it again early in the 3rd. Couldn't barking believe it .

  10. no. based on how they did the compos we would have got 49 + 50 instead of 49 therefore effectively 50 for byrnes was ok nothing worth crying over here

  14. Petterd has played a couple of A grade games and had a couple of moments in other games people remember. People then forget that the majority of his remaining 50 odd games have been below AFL standard. He doesn't consistently work hard enough and is not quite good enough to make a position his own.

  19. Footy aside-Andrew Bolt is the most conceited apologist for the rich and corrupt ever. South Africans like him should be working the farms in the hot sun for their black owners. Sticks up for the strong and belittles the weak . There is a massive wart on his face that is probably his brain. May the grim reaper find an easy and speedy path to his door.

  21. Err - it wasn't brought in to benefit the clubs. Scully compo pick 4 and 13 vs Ward compo pick 6 - tell it to the Dogs - next minute you'll be hammering on he AFL door to hand back that pick 4 I imagine. The same people whinging about FA compo were whinging about Scully compo. Port seems to have done well - but Chaplin did get 4 years. Hawthorn seems to have done poorly when Young got 3 years. It's no real surprise that Byrnes contract would be similar to Rivers and Moloney. Two year modest deals. The "handout" mentality here is amazing - Free Agency isn't the lazy man's trade bonanza.

  22. I can handle it because I'm used to it. But when i see my 11 year old son have to rip his Moloney and Jurah posters from his wall, and the likelihood his favourite Ricky Petterd whose number 15 he wears on the back ofhis guernsey will be traded, that hurts.

  23. Quick to point out that they have 3 first round picks when those picks, now 18, 19 & 21, would have been second rounders in the good old days of 16 clubs. His thought patterns are unadulterated rubbish.

  28. Pretty certain Jon Ralph has it right. Compensation is more about the contract that is signed than the previous achievements. Moloney and Rivers didn't move for cash, they moved for opportunity. Same with the Scully compo, 1mil a year got us a great bit of compo. I think Chaplin and Pearce were offered a bigger contract, and therefore got better compo,

  29. He's different to anything we have at Melbourne from what I can see, he seems to have a fair bit of confidence to attack the ball and his decision making looks spot on, so I guess if they club can get him for next to nothing then why not. Pick 27(?) might be a bit too high if we get that for Riv, particularly if North want him out, but I'n sure the club will work that out.

  31. I recall the article Denham mentioned above and I also happened to be driving and listening to SEN yesterday when he delivered, not for the first time, his Melbourne Bears diatribe and I just wanted to make a few points. If Denham expected miracles from club which in 2011 was accused of playing "bruise-free" football, which capitulated by 186 points to another club, which had players who were said to be at odds with "two administrators in particular", which had the well-documented off field issues to which he referred in his article on top of a long injury list then he is as delusional as he comes across on radio and in print. Now, he's completely misreading the club's current recruiting strategies. He applauds the Bulldogs for keeping intact their early draft picks, congratulates Collingwood for accumulating picks 17, 18 and 20 and condemns Melbourne for giving away early picks to get the players its been targetting over recent weeks. That's bollocks for two reasons. Firstly, the free agency and trade periods aren't over yet and we all know that the situation with available picks can and will change all the way through to 26 October. Secondly, circumstances have conspired to give Melbourne what are currently pick 4 plus Jack Viney (a genuine 2012 top 5 player) plus an All Australian Under 18 KPP in Jesse Hogan (widely acknowledged as equal to at least a 2013 top) plus Dominic Barry who blitzed in the Draft Combine. Good luck to the Bulldogs with their picks and their $10m debt (compared to our substantial surplus thanks to Jimmy, his board and many loyal Demons who believe their club does stand for something) but will they top that with their three first round selections? And will Collingwood beat that with 17, 18 and 20? "Delusional Denham" might try to work that one out but I suspect his dislike of the club to blind him from coming to a knowledgeable conclusion on such a simple matter. But it's in the area where one would expect a journalist to be at his absolute best that Denham really made a fool of himself yesterday. He went on and on about Dawes not being worth the $500kpa that Melbourne was paying him. Those comments came less than 24 hours after Melbourne list manager Tim Harrington told Trade Week Radio that the figures being quoted on Dawes' contract were completely off the mark. One would expect a decent journalist to be aware of such things and not to cite dodgy figures when making his argument. Mind you, one would not expect that of Denham who is to journalism what the Brisbane Bears were to football.

  32. Why? The big problem is that there is no transparency in the calculations for the average punter. The clubs may well have had a better idea. Fact remains, compensation is largely based on the player's new contracts - $s and years. Rivers and Moloney went for short years and low $s; Byrne probably got a nice deal ($s) from us, but 2 yrs also. There it is. We would have not got better than the cats rd3 pick (59) if Rivers had been traded (their rd2 went on MacIntosh - a bigger target than Rivers); Moloney in all reality would have been delisted. What's the beef? Ed: spelling

  33. The compensation seems a little light on, but reflects the value mfc attributed to both Rivers and Moloney. We can say how good they used to be for us, finished x in the b&f last year etc etc, but going forward, the football club has decided that neither of them were worth above market price to stay at the club, and the compensation we got reflects that, you don't receive value for past performance, otherwise the swans could trade Goodes at the end of next season for pick one in the draft... I would rather have seen rivers stay, but he hasn't, I can't make him come back, so we move on.

  35. It does make you wonder when you look back on his first half of the season, in a rubbish side, what sort of forward Mitch Clark would be today if he'd spent most of his career playing there as one of the main focal points. Also how much damage will he do with a steady, decent supply? He often made the most of every opportunity. My god I hope he fully recovers and plays most of next year.

  36. Was just about to say that!

  37. Ok, I would like the club to have a chat to Andersen about this - if Knights is worth nothing, then so is Byrnes. Which means that surely Moloney should get us a third rounder on his own. I want to know what BS they used to decide this.

  38. I reckon the AFL, after receiving many a complaint for maximum compensation given to us for HWFUA (or whatever it is) defection, would have factored it in to our FA compensation. Sure they say that they are mutually exclusive, but that's a load of BS. Maybe they figured to let off some steam at us, since they found nothing to pin against us for the "tanking" debacle. The heads of the AFL have their own agenda to run, and no process within the AFL will ever be completely independent, given the ego's and power-hungry whores that are in charge of our game.

  39. 6pm apparently. But that won't stop Damian "It's understood" Barrett from saying some nonsense with The List Manager (Wallace) from 3 to 5. It's funny how Wallace gets that moniker when he was apart of the greatest list disaster this side of ours...

  40. The only thing this thread demonstrates is the subjective, farcical nature of the way this process has been thought through and will shortly be implemented. Or as Damien Barratt would say "Rules on the run".

  42. Just a rookie. Would imagine Nicholson, Evans, Magner and Couch would be in front of him in terms of promotion. Imagine only one of them would be promoted,Nicholson for me, probably other three retained on the rookie list. Would have thought Leigh Williams would have gone before him though, being three years older.

In reality I haven't seen these kids enough to say whether I want one over another, but I hope they take a kid who has a heap of passion for the game and can play at a really high intensity
