  2. This is different to any win under Bailey we had for these reasons (and I mentioned this in the game day thread): 1. We won a slog. A hard, contested game. 2. We won against a genuine team in good form. Forget the crap about Essendon, yes they were poor, but they were poor because we were at the footy first, and we positioned ourselves fantastically well at stoppages - and dominated Watson in the clearances. I am not getting carried away by the one win, but I am about the circumstances of the win. Winning is great, but winning a hard fought slog against a good team is effing beautiful.

  5. "1st 10 mins will be tight and by half time Bombers will be well up. A mini comeback in 3rd stanza will see demons stick within 10 goals at 3/4 time break and after a few party tricks in the last it will be Essendon by 84" "There will probably be no sweat on the players after game lol." "There are only two teams we haven't beaten since 2009. One is collingwood, Melbourne is the other. Time to crush them." "Have a feeling we will still be a bit flat...cant help think there are more sore guys then we let on. We will win this week by around 7 goals but the Sydney game next week will be tough." "I hope a few players cash in against this rabble. Stewart Crameri to kick 7 and top the goalkicking by the end of the round." "Melbourne are so [censored] this year its not funny. They would need to play out of our skins and we would have to have an incredibly bad game for it to even be close. I find it almost incredible people think Melbourne are a chance. I think Essendon will hand out the mother of all floggings. Hird will demand an A grade performance on the G to our gameplan. 60-100pt hiding coming up." Ah...so good.

  6. If you had a player with Jacks, skills and smarts and had Hurleys aggression you would have a Wayne Carey.

  7. I'd prefer a quote from David King, Paul Roos, Mike Sheahan, Caroline Wilson or even Tony Shaw.

  8. Calling it definitively. He's already a better player than Hurley and has far more upside. More skill, better awareness and now you can perceptibly see his confidence starting to rise. We got this one right.

  10. “Everyone is dancing around the issues - the whole football world - but I think someone just has to come out and say SEN and FoxFooty have made a massive error as media organisations, appointing failed Richmond Assistant Coach David King as a a footy expert,” Demoniac said on the Demonland forum..

  11. FCS, Hardnut - we played the same way we have played the rest of the season - the boys just happened to trust each other to do what they were supposed to do IN THE GAMEPLAN. They played the contested, long ball footy that they have played all year, and they worked hard to be in right places defensively - which some have said curtails their 'natural instincts.' Well, this game was a sign that their natural instincts are being 'repaired' or 'evolved' into something that helps us do what we never did under Bailey, NEVER: Win a slog of a game of hard, tough footy against a top 4 team (don't laugh they are 8 and 2) in good form. We just did that because the boys are buying into what Neeld is saying and trusting their teammates to do their job.

  12. Special mentions to Greg Denham, Mark McLure, Patrick Smith, Robert Walls, Grant Thomas and Mike Sheehan, but this award was never in doubt. “Everyone is dancing around the issues - the whole football world - but I think someone just has to come out and say Melbourne has made a massive error as a club, appointing Mark Neeld as a senior coach,” King said on Fox Footy’s AFL Insider. http://www.heraldsun...f-1226364175431

  13. What I thought was more interesting was that when we finally crack a win, who does Neeld bring along to the presser? Not the maligned co-captains, not a member of the leadership group, but a player who this year has been dejected, out of form and seemingly odds-on to leave the club at the end of the year. Thought it sent a strong message of unity.

  14. I reckon it was genius of him to coach the last quarter on the bench and I reckon he just would have been encouraging them all the time. I looked down and he actually had to hold the players back so they wouldnt run on the ground before the siren went. I watched the end bit at home and just the emotion of him chucking down the headphones and hugging the 4 interchange players then running to the rooms. I thought he may have actually ran out onto the ground with the players but instead he wanted to share it with his assistant coaches and others. Loved how all the support staff got around him and I reckon he should have been in the middle of the circle but I guess he thought it was the players moment. he has just had a huge weight lifted from his shoulders and he will sleep very well. Also loved how Don McLardy just went up and gave him a huge hug. Hope it can continue.

  16. Can't describe how this feels as a supporter who has been there at every game through the dark days of the last 4 years (inc 186). Somehow one great win can make up for many shattering losses. Was so proud of the way we played tonight- our tackling and pressure was ferocious and it was the first time in quite a while that we really played for each other. Absolutely stoked for neeldy he well and truly deserves this. Hope that we can all go out and enjoy the rest of the weekend and celebrate a great win for our club that will hopefully be the turning point for our club! GO DEES!!

  17. Can't be overemphasised. We were in front at half time, but then they came out with more intent. We soaked it up, but were still 8 points down at the last change. There was a time that would have been game-over, but to get up from there, to slog our way back and win was something that we've (almost) never been able to do. More importantly, it's the mark of a good side.

  20. Firstly for Jim, he would of been proud Secondly for Neeld, how anyone has deserved this its him, did his job, celebrated the win, and ran to the box to thank his coaches while letting the players have their moment It really was the first 22 man 4 quarter effort weve had in a very long time. Every single player stood up and was accounted for. Watts put old demons to bed with Hurley, his contest at the end with Jobe won us the game, Jobe was getting Essendon into the game and he beat him one on one Jamar Moloney Sylvia really were different players out there Then there were the usuals... Jones Clark Howe etc Nicholson ran them ragged, Tom Mcdonald gets better each week and Rivers put in one of the best defensive shifts this club has seen in ages, was remarkable! Look at those final images and tell me Neeld has lost the players, that was winning for the coach and fans if ever ive seen one!

  21. this was never in doubt. Hurleys good, but Watts is just that much skillful. Taking on Jobe one on one at the end won us the game, won a contest no other player has won this year yet

  25. I could not care whether Watts ends up better than Nik Nat or Hurley. I also could not care whether he ends up a 100 goal full forward. I just want the kid to do the most with his god given attributes in the position that best suits him. I think we're starting to see where that could be. A very Goddard-esque game last night.

  28. I didn't cry at the end, but when Garland came charging out of the goal square and took that mark (I think it may have been the kick he shanked?), my hands were shaking and I nearly cried then because my brain did not know how to cope with the surge of emotion coming. Fuck, what a great feeling. I'm still high 11 hours later (after possibly the worst sleep I've ever had). I love footy.

  29. Just loved some of watts' smart taps to a teammate's advantage from either the air or on the deck. Just an amazing awareness and always seems to be thinking one step ahead.

  30. A huge bonus to this win is the fact it was on prime time free to air TV for everyone to see. The first step in earning back the respect of the AFL community. Obviously a long way to go, but its a start.

  32. He looks like a totally different player down back. He looks faster, harder, plays with more urgency, reads It so much better playing behind the ball. It's amazing what happens when you have to be accountable for someone, all of a sudden you cant just cruise around at half pace. Keep him there for the year or as long as it takes or until all of those assets I mentioned are considered the norm. Well played Killer!

  34. Mark Stevens on TripleMMM was saying before the game how Melbourne supporters should be on the verge of microwaving their memberships, and that we didn't have a chance against GWS. It's only one win, but it was against the odds and against quality opposition - stick that in your pipe Stevo, you sensationalist tabloid [censored].

  36. Being able to defend a slender lead for over 10 minutes has nothing to do with "free flowing football" or "natural footy instincts".

  39. Not much between them, really. What Watts has in poise and awareness, Hurley has in physical presence. The difference at the moment is that Watts is helping a side win and Hurley is being beaten. Also, I reckon the commentators were wrong tonight. Watts was not the spare man in defence. He tackled, spoilt, punched the ball, peeled of his man, and a couple of times went third man up. His game was much better than a cheap loose man in defence game.

  40. Boys said afterwards the 2 key words before this game were Intent and Courage. That and the key moves of Grimes in the middle and Garland up forward. My 11 year old son said i nearly cried i was so happy dad.......stick with em son!

  41. Michael Hurley has a competetive nature about him that Jack Watts gets criticised for not having, but I can count about four or five times tonight when Jack gathered the team's wits at crucial moments, reminding them to calm down and think for a second. That's Jack Watts' strength. His contemplative nature.
