There were a number of players expected to go 30's to 40's in today's draft who missed out. Most of these are sure to get picked up in the rookie draft.

Who should we be looking at?

What type of player should we be targeting?

Players that missed:

Patrick McGinnity- All Australia midfielder. a Tagger. We could use him to replace godfrey perhaps?

Kangers, Smouha, Geartner- are sorta similar in that they are athletes before footballers. However if they are taught the game properly, then they could perhaps turn into fantastic key defenders who have the athletic abilities to keep up with even Nick Reiwold.

Gourdis- Highly athletic and highly rated pre-draft. not sure why he slipped, but with his draft camp results could definitely be worth a go.

Bellchambers, Renton and Mulligan- ruckman that missed out. clubs love picking up ruckman in the rookie draft bc they are so risky. bellchambers would be a great rookie pick up.

Sandilands and Arrowsmith also missed out.

In my opinion, we should not pick up Sampi in the psd. we'v picked up Maric now so there's no need at all. He's fat, unfit and has a bad knee.

We should instead go for an 18yr old. Gourdis would be a good pickup to add to our KP stocks.

In the rookie draft we should certainly pick up a ruckman. I'm a big fan of Sandilands I hope we get him.

Yup, agree that drafting Maric effectively rules out Sampi. No doubt we will get one of the overlooked players...hopefully Gourdis, who was widely regarded as top 15. Could be a long term replacement for Neita.

I believe Gaertner is too young to be rookied.

seems kinda of stupid that a kid is old enough to be drafted but not old enough to be a rookie.

Anyway a lot of smokies and bottom aged players for CAC to choose from.

Don't forget Valenti. He's worthy of at least one rookie spot.

there is a reason that Gaertner wasn't selected in the top 75 players today. He isn't worth it in the eyes of recruiters..and here you guys are talking about this guy being a replacement for Godfrey and this guy being a possible replacement for Neitz..If they were an outside chance to replace these players then they would have been picked up!

just because you don't get picked up in the national draft as a 17-18 year old, doesn't mean you won't turn out to be a star of the afl at 22+ yrs old.

just ask dean cox, James Mcdonald, Aaron davey and all the other stars of the afl that have come thru the rookie drafts.

alot of the guyz who will get picked up in the rookie draft are terrific atheletes, but not necessary terrific footballers at this stage. if they develop well, there no reason why Gourdis can't be a great CHF, Mcginnity a great onball/tagger, Kangars a great fullback or Geartner a TomWilliamesk CHB...

Not really. Financially there's a big difference between being senior listed and rookied. I imagine it's to protect bottom age young kids -- who would probably be spending their year 12 year on an AFL list -- from being screwed.

Sampi looks like he will miss the cut.

Why not go after one of two of these overlooked guys (depending on who is available). Rookies are worth the gamble!

That was my reaction as well. Isn't that the whole point of the Rookie List? Pick up guys who could be players but where the clubs are just not convinced enough to put them on a list.

It is something that the AFL is going to have to clear up. I heard CAC interviewed yesterday and he said that the reason for the long delay on our last pick before finally passing was about whether or not there were any 17YOs there who we wanted but could not get in the rookie draft. FFS, they are eligible for the NATIONAL draft, why then are they ineligible for the rookie draft?

We have one spot on our senior list to fill. This can now only be filled in the PSD; my bet is Sampi.

I wouldnt mind grabbing Kangars somewhee along the line. I like the idea of increasing our taller defender stocks. Its not like we'e exactly overflowing in thi sdept !!

I think it will be hard for Valenti to get a gig, given the type of players we have drafted and the current list. Sampi has also now probably missed out. I would imagine a ruckman and four KPP's will be the go in the PSD/Rookie drafts.

I would have thought that had we picked Masten then Valenti would have had less chance.

With Morton coming aboard, another potential Nathan Jones is quite possible.

Sure we have a few of his type but when Jones played at sandy I thought Valenti was as good.

I would like to see him given a go.

I have pushed for Valenti and Martin in the Rookie draft for most of the year, but I am not sure after the draft that is the way we will go.

Just wondering if anyone knows whether they still pick the best player available in the rookie draft or do they go for needs?

My thinking is you would be inclined to look a bit further down the road with rookies and start plugging up holes with those you think might mature and grow into specific positions. If it works...all good.. it fit doesnt you go get some more. It more hit and miss really. Of course you can occasionally strike gold :)

Here's my list of players to watch out for in the rookie draft:

Bellchambers, Bongetti, Bowden, Ellard, Garlett, Gourdis, Grima, Kangars, McGinnity, Salter, L. Sampey, Sandilands. Any of these would be worth a spot on the rookie list for sure. Go to AFLs draft tracker for the lowdown on these boys.

As for the PSD, I guess we're picking up Sampi for the last spot on the senior list. What do people think?

Forget Sampi. We need someone like young Sampey or Gourdis from WA, both key forwards who seem to know where the goals are.

Bellchambers. Tassie players have been great for us - lets add another (even if he is from the turd-hole Launceston)

it depends what richmond and carlton do though

i hear richmond have gourdis and collard coming over to train with them, but are also interested in guy richards...

i dont know what calrton are able to do in terms of $$$ and spots on the list (have they got room for a PSD pick)??? the embley rumours keep bobbing up from calrton too

ashley mcgrath is likely to put himself in the PSD, i have not heard whether ben rutten has signed up yet...

gourdis, kangars, bellcahmbers could all be good choices, we MUST have someone else in mind, or else we would have taken gourdis at pick 76

I want sampi if he proves himself on the track over the next 2 weeks. i think he would be a great investment for little financial sacrifice. We do now have a good stockpile of young raw players, lets add a hard bodied experianced afl player to our list.

Agree.

I think we should use our pick 3 in the PSD with a player that has AFL experience that can slot into the team from round 1 onwards.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
