Mark Riley to Carlton Confirmed

With todays confirmation that Carlton have secured the services of our caretaker coach Mark Riley, we have now lost a SIGNIFICANT amount of player and coaching knowledge (that relates specifically to our team) at the top end. Daniher, Fagan and now Riley have all departed.

Mark Riley had another year of his contract to run. What is the point in having contracts if we do not enforce them. I understand it would have been difficult for Mark to spend 12 more months in an assistant role when he had been a stand in coach but at the end of the day, that is what he was hired to do and would have done if Neale had remained until the season's end.

His knowledge would have been invaluable for Dean Bailey during a one year crossover or transition period.

I am a little angry at the MFC for allowing him to step away from his commitments and unless there are special circumstances we don't know about, I ask the club to "PLEASE EXPLAIN" - HONESTLY and issue a press release or e-mail to members.

It is exceedingly rare for caretaker coaches who have then been passed over to stay with their original club - there are lame duck issues, as well as the obvious disappointment factors. You have to also remember that he is Daniher's man and a new message needs to be taught. I think it is good that he is leaving. Obviously, he has done a good job, but Bailey needs to assemble HIS team. It is worth noting that despite the outflow of our FD staff, the inflow of impressive additions Connolly and Bailey counters that and there are more, no doubt impressive additions, to follow.

There is no real benefit having original people asround anyway, Bailey's player knowledge will be very strong anyway.

Tallstuey , you will be probably in the minority here thinking it would be better if Riley remained. He represents a failed era. Your entitled to your opinion of course, dont expect much in the way of support.

I'll do it for them.

It's called reality, and happens every day in business.

Riley's position was untenable, and good luck to him for getting a new one at Carlton. The less reliance Bailey has on 'history' the better.

He needs a clean sweep to run his own race.

given we were prob gonna sack riley anyway to let bailey have his own team, it is probably good that he jumped ship like this...

it would have been amicable but this way there are no payouts...

Best result for everyone involved IMO. I wish Mark all the best.
I agree it is best that Bomber moves on BUT there are two issues here - one that Riley still has a year to run on his contract and two that Carlton are flush with funds and can buy any football staff they require and they go after the best - Mark Riley. We already had him locked in for another year. How much is this going to cost the club.

It isn't going to cost the club anything. He left on his own accord. If he had been sacked it would involve a payout.

All it is going to cost the club is an assistant coach that will need to be replaced.

Best to flush out anything attached to the Daniher era.

Having said that I'll miss his press conferences and interviews. They were always good listening. ie - "we got the burger with the lot" - after the Dogs win.

I thought the football world has stopped operating due to this whole Judd saga.... it's nice to see that things are still in motion.

Good luck to Riley, and may Carlton suffer at the bottom of the ladder, WITHOUT JUDD, for many more years to come.

All the best to him, this is the start of a new era for the MFC and i think the fact is that it would hurt the relationship between Bails and the players if Reilly remained, just because he's been around for the Danners times and he was passed over for the top job.

Good luck Bomer, though i don't wish your new club any success!

I think Riley did a good job as caretaker coach and wish him the best of luck at The Tankers. I do not know if he had an out clause if Danners was no longer coach, or whether in consultation with Dean Bailey it was thought that he would be better off at The Tankers. I don't care what the reason was really. I think the idea is for Bailey to make up his own mind on the players and not rely on previous staff knowledge too much, and to be able to have assistants that he wants to bring in, like Mahoney if that is true.

Saves the club from paying Bomber out... fantastic!

I have heard that Matthews rated very highly O'Donnell as an assistant.. maybe thought he wasnt tough enough to make the hard decisions as a senior coach (reminds me of an ex demon coach we all know..).

Everything is going to plan

Get rid of everything from the Daniher era, besides Craig Cameron of course

Now hopefully Bohdan is next..

Looks like a good result for all concerned. Impossible for Dean B to have 2 of the other candidates for the main gig in the club and very hard for Bomber R to stay having been the caretaker. Didnt work with Hutchy and didnt do him any good. Far better for him to get a gig with Ratten who he has worked with before. Suspect odd lenghtening for his other preferred option of following ND to Bummers (which is now no certainty) may have influenced him jumping to blues.

Dont think money had anything to do with it but MFC has avoided a pay out.

Tallstuey, the thing to be critical of MFC for is how they had assistant coaches (Bomber R and Paul Williams) contracted for year longer than ND when it was clear 12 months ago that was 50:50 at best that ND would get contract extension at end of 2007.

Does anyone know what status of paul williams is?? Does Dean B have to have him for 2008?

Keeping existing assistant coaches expecially ones who have been caretaker isnt the best option for the club or players.

Coaches i would imagine (like we do) make up their mind about certain players in regards to numerous things like strengths, weaknesses, potential etc etc. And by keeping existing coaches then these opinions/knowledge will remain at the club. These opinions havent gained success thus far... Maybe one Brad Millers confidence has suffered at the hands of previous coach/s and the previous coach/s were wrong with how they dealt with him.

Therefore...

.

Bringing in a fresh coach, brings a fresh approach and new opinions can be forged. The players get another oppotunity to prove there worth, so Miller - (he started brightly and has stagnated in recent seasons) get another crack. A whole new coaching staff may reinvigorate him (we can only hope and pray)...

Riley leaving via another club is better than paying out his contract. I too liked his press conferences and his humor!

Thank you Mark for all your hard work!

thats it get rid of everything to do with ND, it has an 'accept mediocrity' tag to it

Clarkeson brought in his own assistants when he got the job at Haawthorn, and that is not exactly a failure yet. I expect that some ex-bombers from Bailey's era to start arriving at the MFC.....

I say goodriddens. Everything and anything that had anything to do with Daniher should be gone; it's a fresh start and a new coaching team.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
