Nah, he jumped over them

Just couldn’t hold it

massive hanger and not coming down with the ball reminds me of Kossie. Great to watch though

Kossie finally held onto one last year! I reckon he'll take a few more this season too.

Looks like real gem and has a bit of the Toby Greens or Zac Bailey’s about him.

He, Chandler, Pickett x2 is a nice mix of dynamic small forwards.

Think this guy is the reason Kolt’s being trialled down back. They’ll want to get games into Matthews this year. Chandler, L Pickett and Matthews the smalls.

Agreed. I actually think Kolt could be a really good lockdown defender on smalls/mediums a bit like a Starcevich.

Similar replacement for Spargo with his tenacious tackling, but also looks like he has more tricks as well.

Wouldn't be hard to do!

I love Spargy-pants but I’m glad Tommy has more tricks than him because Charlie didn’t have any!

except being our best kicking inside 50.

Kolt's down back because Bowser is out, CJ and Salem are both ticking time bombs with soft tissue injuries and AMW is still making his way back. And X Taylor has to build his tank and settle in to playing against men. We needed a fit body back there just to get through the intraclub.

It will be great if Matthews can debut, yet alone more than that. He had a serious knee injury and was restricted to lap running in the rehab group until only a few weeks ago. The coaches won't be expecting him to get AFL games until they see consistent performance at Casey.

If he can kick more than 35 metres we're already winning.

True, but if he can hit targets inside 50 as reliably as Spargo did, to the point he was pretty much best in the league at it, then maybe kicking more than 35m isn't so important.

Charlie might have had some limitations, but I'll always regard him as an important part of our rebuild and premiership.

I call that a ‘skill’. Just seemed like a trick to Melbourne supporters based on limited exposure to such a skill

The half back position seems to suit Tholstrup way more.

Only issue was with him was he never did it anywher near enough...that's ontop of the fact thats essentially where his impact started and finished - Matthews appears to have signficantly more to his game (at least the ceiling to do so) than sprago did

It might suit him but he'll be joining the queue at Casey.....Lindsay, Salem, Jiath, Howes, Taylor, AMW, Onley

He'll need to find some sure handedness to get a game in the back half ahead of the first 4 on that list and there are 3 chasing him already.

He really needs to become a midfielder but he ain't got it atm.......needs a solid year.

Agreed

Mostly as he’s not smart nor skilled enough to flourish as a half forward / mid at this stage

His kicking still looked like it left a lot to be desired - under no pressure executing a switch kick he still failed to hit targets

He clearly seems to have a great attitude and positive personality but he is a long way from looking like a first round pick should as they are about to enter a third year on an AFL list

  • PREVIEW: Richmond

Who would have imagined, when the season kicked off early last month, that Melbourne would emerge from the opening six weeks with wins over both Queensland powerhouses? At the time, Gold Coast and Brisbane were the competition’s early pace-setters, the flavours of the month, and the prospect of the Demons toppling both within the course of a fortnight seemed remote. Yet here they are, banking those scalps alongside home victories over two traditional Victorian rivals and building a quietly impressive resume.
