Farewell Christian Petracca

Featured Replies

Really happy for him. He wanted and needed a fresh start. So did we. It’s a win win.

We got 3 first round picks and a massive amount of cap space to help us reshape the list in the next 2-3 years

No point worrying about how he plays with the Suns as he was never getting back to that level with us, relationship was too far gone

Not sure I'd say really happy for him, perhaps happy. But otherwise reflects my thoughts exactly.

One thing I will say, i couldn't get kayo working ans so watched Chanel 7.

Good lord the praise for Tracc was way over the too- you'd think wes watched the greatest match played by an individual ever.

And Blimey, also over the top praise for Suns too.

Great first up game by Christian, so clean and efficient. Still carries on like a [censored] and let’s see how he copes when adversity comes at a point.

Such an impact just validates the he did not want to be at MFC and needed a fresh start. For what we need moving forward, 3 first rounders plus cap space plus resetting us as a connected team is good for us.

I haven't been able to do that for 20 years.

Not sure how I feel about Trac. Was sensational for them last night and disposal efficiency that I haven’t seen during his time at Melbourne. Didn’t like the way he left Melbourne, clearly wasn’t happy here but to be honest I wasn’t happy with the club myself. He just seems to make things about himself that rubbed me up the wrong way. Long term I think we will be fine and I am excited about our short and long term future.

Will I boo him in round 4, honestly don’t know yet I am an impulsive guy and it depends how many “cheeky beers” I have had pre game.

Great game for Tracc. He was in 2021 form. However, the opposition were witches hats. Whether it’s that they are missing stars, suffering a grand final hangover, couldn’t handle the humidity??? Either way, they were fairly insipid

The guy plys elsewhere, didn't want to invest in the club, walked out on his mates. Move on, leaks are gone, maybe he will pick up a cheap premiership. Get ready for the next generation.

I’m the ultimate Dees tragic & l hated every minute of Petraccas performance

I still rate loyalty & honouring contracts

Hopefully the Karma bus will run him over

Call him whatever you want, but It’s hard not to view a performance like that as incredibly damning of…whatever the hell was going on at the MFC for the last four years.

Goodwin should have been sacked at the end of 23 debacle, I said so then I'll reiterate it now!

He is a great player with not too many peers when his head and body are right.

With a healthy list they should be favourites to take it out this year.

Bit of a horror show last night for Dees’ fans, with the guy we had and the guy we wanted being the Suns’ best players.

I now turn to the careers of Taylor, Trelly and the kid we take with the Suns’ pick this year. These three will occupy my support and interest in the future.

The way I see it, we got 11 years out of Trac. The last 2 might not have been great, but before that we got 2 BnFs, 4 AAs and a Norm Smith. If thats not good service, I'm not sure what is, and its honestly more than I thought we'd get when we drafted him (I always thought he'd leave after a few years because we weren't Collingwood).

We then got 3 first round draft picks. He didn't hold us to ransom, we got good value for a guy who didn't want to be here anymore. I won't be cheering him, but I'll look more fondly on Trac than I will Jackson, McVee or Oliver. And at least he isn't playing for the Pies or Blues

There was no doubt that if the suns play like they did yesterday Trac was going to get back to his best. It’s if they hit any road blocks along the season if his attitude changes and doesn’t spit the dummy and puts his head down and sooks. 4 games into the season last year he was throwing his mouth guard onto the ground.

I thought Gus should’ve won that Norm Smith anyway.

I would say all three. Geelong won't be a Premiership front runner but they will get better and probably be in the finals and when you are in the September mix you then need a run of quality games at the right time to pull it off.

So apparently he's been working with a kicking coach. Well did we ever implement that & work on that with him?

If Oliver comes out today & starts hitting targets I'm going to be questioning what goody did in the last couple of years

Quite right loyalty and honouring contracts goes both ways. How much did the club show Oliver and May? And while it was a different regime, to Jr Mac? To Watts. To Hogan. People will say different circumstances but folks can't cherry pick examples that suit their biases.

Btw, no matter how disappointed people are the last line is quite distasteful.

With the ego he has I’ll take the fact that he’ll see out his remaining years in a footballing backwater playing in front of 8k every second week (no way was there 19k there last night) as a win for us.

It was easily a top 5 career performance from Petracca and probably the best team performance from the suns ever. Of course they were getting praised.

Not sure if the Petracca trade was a win win for both clubs. Certainly G.C benefited by the trade , MFC unknown at this stage.

Some fact checks:

  • He did not add an extra year to his contract.

  • To say we didn't get his best in the last few years is totally wrong. In 2024 he played 12.5 games and still ended up 20th in the Brownlow and was mfc highest vote scorer. When he was injured we were equal 7th on the ladder. (11th on %). Our 2024 season crashed after he was injured. 2025 wasn't his best but it was still very good.

  • He didn't have the speed with us. At mfc his training was for a power/burst role. Now it looks like GCS have modified his training regime to include speed, making him a more balanced player. Even his body shape looks a bit different.

  • He didn't have the accuracy when he played with us. G Lyon said he has been working with GCS kicking coach. Did we have one? Our team was full of other 'pie floater' players. And GCS fwd of centre is more open whereas our players kicked into congestion.

  • Goal kicking, set shots were poor but shots on the run and snap shots were very good with us.

  • He wants to play for a big club. Clearly that isn't true.

He plays in a different team, to a different game plan with clearly motivated players, advantages he didn't have in recent years at mfc.

So folks, think or do some research before posting myths dressed up as facts.

So what you're saying is that we should have kept the likes of Weideman, Harmes, Oliver, Hogan who were still contracted at the time, not explore a trade last year for Steven May and not bother going after Bailey Humphrey who is contracted until 2028??

Contracts mean nothing now days.

And that is exactly what he wants.

Going to GCS shows the big crowd/big club stuff was a bit of a furphy made up by media and disgruntled fans.

Look, I come here to rage about a traitorous ex player and then you go and write a composed post that I agree with completely.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
