It was apparently mentioned on 'Gettable' today that Charlie Spargo is attracting interest from other clubs.

Out of contract at the end of this season after two injury plagued years.

Do people still see him as a part of our side going forward?

This is my understanding from speaking to a family member of his a month back, but Charlie is currently assessing his options at the end of the year.

I think he wants a fresh start, but I dont know entirely know whether there is interest or not as we didn't discuss opposition club interests.

Add him to list of maligned played that are bagged on here.

Then go well at another club and people wonder why we let him go

He is 100% keep for me

He kicks well to other players but scores too infrequently. Although we desperately need better kicks and someone with his vision, I think the latter part is emblematic of our forward woes.

He's also small and a bit slower after recent injuries. I know his role was forward pressure as per the coach's defence-first mindset but all of this makes him a very frustrating player in my opinion.

I think he's definitely on the list of possible trades and I wouldn't lament him leaving for other opportunities.

I hope whoever coaches us next can recruit or else develop some of our better skilled players to play this role and score more than Spargs.

he's a free agent

he will leave to head to the best offer and opportunity that presents itself

Injuries haven’t helped him but the last time he genuinely contributed to team success was in 2021

Thanks for your help with the flag Spargo but it’s a see ya from me

He was a great role player for a couple of seasons, but I can't imagine any other clubs will have any interest based on form and fitness over the past three years. He's slow and doesn't have a penetrating kick - players that can't do either of those things have a tough time these days.

Other clubs attracting interest?? Like ooodnadatta magoos, seriously, he has been so very fortunate to have actually played 1 game! Nup, let him look elsewhere!

Your dislike for Charlie knows no bounds. So very fortunate to have actually played one game...classic. Do you actually believe what you type?

Spargo need to be the last piece in a good team, he won't make you a good team but will do good work in a good team.

If he goes I won't care. If he stays I hope the next coach can get more out of him.

A bit of an enigma is ol Spargypants. A very hard player to pigeon hole and therefore evaluate.

For mine he's quite a clever footballer but probably hasn't quite the attributes to be devastating to opponents. He's actually quite skilful and his disposals are generally very well considered. If he had another 10-15 m off the boot he'd be even more unique than he currently is.

I think with a change of guard he might find it more of a battle to garner games at the Dees and if another were to throw a lifeline and wish him well.

Not everyone plays in a Premiership 👍

He’s a good user and decision maker in a team lacking those qualities. Obviously it’s his choice to stay or not, but I’d keep him around to see if the new coach can leverage his qualities.

I find it it somewhat difficult to make a call on Spargo, especially not knowing who our coach will be going forward and what our game will look like. I think he's the type of player we need, overall. He's one of our more damaging kicks going inside 50 and can be creative around the ground, particularly with linking play and his run. However, he is also a limited player; he's somewhat undersized, lacks significant penetration on his kicking and doesn't hit the scoreboard often. The scoreboard factor could potentially change if he was utilised differently and we look to change the F50 game, but that's speculative.

Given he is one of our better users and also plays a linking role when fit, I'd be inclined to retain him. His 2021 was very good and it's no surprise his game improved when our side was looking far more dangerous and holistically sound.

I think Charlie has the opportunity to extend his career with a reasonable length contract (longer than he'd get at Melbourne) as part of free agency. With a new coach coming in, and being a fringe player, you'd think he might explore options. Similarly, we might be ok with losing him for a 3rd round compo pick so we have points for Kalani White. I suspect it will be win win whatever agreement is reached.

Charlie is a 4th generation AFL player. His dad Paul, played 90 games for Nth and Brisbane. His grandfather Bob played 80 including a losing grand final for Footscray. His great grandfather, Bob Snr played for 65 games for Footscray and 2 for Melbourne! Add to that his great uncle Ricky also played for Footscray.

With Charlie now having over 100 games under his belt at the Dees, there is a chance there will be another Spargo running around in the future!

A permanent forward who has kicked 1 goal in 10 games this year. Supposedly a wonderful kick inside 50, but he only has 4 goal assists in those 10 games.

I genuinely don't understand what his role is meant to be, but surely he can't be performing it to the level expected.

No doubt he played an important part in 2021 but, like most of his teammates, he has gone significantly backwards since.

The best thing for both player and club would be for him to find a new home at year end, likely as a delisted free agent.

Been a pretty loyal servant Deserves to see if he can get a longer contract than we might offer. Or one with better terms.

In the end we have to change some players

Even parting with loyal or good even great ones. Glad it’s not my call

I was surprised we got rid of Goodwin but interested now in the next bit.

He’s significantly slowed down and dropped in output. I’m ok with him going.

Charlie, Paul and Bob are also all members of the 'first kick, first goal' club. Extremely unique!

He was never quick and some poor injury management has made this issue much more apparent.

I would offer him a 1-2 year deal to see if he can get back to his best. Might be tempted by the new coaching appointment.

We are severely lacking experienced players in the 25-28 age bracket and I don't think we can afford to lose many more.

Sidenote. Achilles injuries are incredibly debilitating. Probably more so than an ACL these days. They destroy your muscle density in your calves and take so long to recover from. Looking at the NBA, many players suffering from achilles tears or ruptures never returned to decent form.

Allegedly this guy coached, the way he critique and comments on players and games makes that very hard to believe, a couple of laps and circle work would have been frequent

Spargo has been a great servant to the club but he's been pushed out of the side. If he has a decent offer elsewhere he should go, not much more than depth for us these days.

A smart footballer. Good overhead for a small and a smart user.

Will be in demand.

Ideally retain and see how he goes under new coach implementing the transition running game plan de jour that Goody didnt seem to be able to do.

  • Thank You Simon Goodwin

As Demon fans, we’ve ridden a rollercoaster of emotions over the decades; the heartbreaks, the near misses, the wooden spoons, and the endless waiting. But through it all, we clung to hope. And then came Simon Goodwin. Before he ever wore red and blue, he was a champion in his own right. A five-time All-Australian, two-time Best and Fairest, and two-time premiership hero and Captain with Adelaide, Simon Goodwin was always destined to lead. When he transitioned from the field to the coach's box, first as an assistant at Essendon, he began shaping a new legacy.
