I know. If i was Head Coach, Goalkicking Practices would be a mandatory requirement for every player on a regular basis.

Similar to the Australian Cricket Team back in the 80’s, all players including bowlers had to bat in the nets.

And guess what, the Tailenders started making valuable contributions to an innings and games were won….

The Lack of care towards goalkicking by ALL Players has cost us Finals and at least one Flag

We are now in the Bottom 4

A big problem as I see it is to do with the tenet of our game. It seems to me the 'method of play' ( and I'll borrow that knowing it's a very loose notion ..method ) is primarily about pressure. What we are not is a SKILLS-BASED team .

We are quite devoid of skills actually ( imo )

We also employ ZERO craft in our forward play ( craft borrowed with method..see above lol )

We just don't seem to go about our footy based upon the mechanical abilities required. We're just British Bulldog at it and that's it.

We're all Zig and NO Zag !!

This stems from mindset and that all comes from....... ?? 😉

You clearly don't remember 2013

People are angry and I totally get it. However the one thing I really didn't expect to see on here was a callout on Max for being detrimental to the side and being carried rather than the carrier. I don't know if it's just a troll feeding exercise but there is literally nothing about Max's performances (especially those of late) that are holding us back, making him bigger than the club or hurting us in any way.

I’m so looking forward to the bye. I cannot take much more and I’m exhausted. And the TV is going to take about 2 weeks to repair.

I’m hating loving this team!

Professional footy players should not be missing those, you would be ropeable if they were park players missing them let alone supposedly elite athletes. Unforgiveable, they should feel horrible about that failure of basic skill execution.

I wonder if they actually care?

Oh well

I remember Brad Scott in his Norf days dropping one of their small forwards because he was missing too many goals...Lindsay someone?

Created a real stir as he was quite a dynamic player

Geez @layzie I don't see that anyone would suggest he's being carried by the team. He has been a bloody gem and is in AA form. He busts his guts for us and I think everyone here acknowledges it.
But, I think he's kicked 2 goals 11 behinds this year (and probably a couple OOF)

The captain (and senior players) have to go back and slot those. I know he said he's been working on his accuracy but all reports from training is that there's no structured approach by the club to try and get us out of the goal kicking yips. None!

Max has to help lead this approach.

It's like we're in complete denial of the problems that are seeing us lose games continually through poor forward entries and poor accuracy.

We've dropped at least 3 games through poor accuracy this year. Win those and we'd be sitting around mid table and keeping our members engaged.

We can't continue like this. It's unsustainable, demoralising and damaging for all parties involved with our club.

It's the definition of insanity right now. If the review stated that players needed more independence, then Max and the leadership team have to take ownership and help drive the change.

Look the goalkicking aspect is another thing and yes that side of his game does hurt. It would be great if he was good for a goal a week, but it annoys me how we're so reliant on Max dobbing chances to keep us in a game as well.

He does have to shoulder some responsibility in that regard but he's certainly not alone.

Posters wanted Gawn to rest in the forward pocket

There was a reason Johnny Schultz changed in the back pocket

Every decent team uses pressure in its execution.

They are also drilled in many other facets

The MFC is just badly Coached by the Football Department, it can be nothing else

It happens weekly

Yes good teams use pressure.. it's A tool . It's about our ONLY tool. And therein lies the problem.

I often wonder WHAT is actually coached at Melbourne

Kicking for goal? Yes, certainly an issue. Lack of separation in the forward line? Yes, woeful. But for me the problem goes deeper than that.

Basic skills are missing. Fumbling, missing targets by both hand and foot and conceding possession time and time again from the opposition's point kick ins. So often, we see the oppo going coast to coast from their backline, without one of our players touching the ball. Yet, when we kick in, it is mostly down the line to a pack and therefore virtually a 50/50 contest. We transition from defence to attack mostly under intense pressure, but don't return the favour going the other way.

Yesterday, to me, Viney was clearly underdone, as a result of his hand injury, Clarrie still doesn't look fit to me and Trac looks unfit, or he either is carrying an injury or he's lost interest. When you have a core group of players who look out of sorts, then it becomes contagious among the younger blokes. May and Lever are not the focussed and reliable backs they were.

Of course if any of this is true, then it begs the question; WHY? What is the root cause? I do not believe we are as bad as some of our results may suggest, but as supporters, we are entitled to question and expect answers, over and above motherhood statements.

First of all great reference, RIP to the great man.

It was very common practice for decades to rest ruckmen in the back pocket. The game has evolved so much obviously and there has never been more versatile and athletic rucks but it was a method that worked well.

You had to rest them somewhere. There was no interchange then.

We're at 20.3% for the season. We're 7th for shots per inside 50, but 18th for goals per inside 50.

We certainly don't look like we get a goal for every 5 entries in our fwd 50.

Whilst the modern game is made for pianists we have all the piano lifters.

Ripping analogy Rab, spot on.

We are all force and no finesse. It worked for a time when clubs didn't value precision kicking and leg speed to the extent they do now.

We win the ball more than enough, get it into our F50 and fight to keep it there long enough to kick 8 goals 15 behinds. Meanwhile the opposition flood back, absorb pressure with numbers until the next time they can scythe the ball end to end with speed and precision.

I remember a commentator saying something similar about the dutch national team in the 2010 World Cup final against Spain. Also @binman on the post game Collingwood podcast, to the effect of us having hammers and mallets whilst Collingwood have scalpels.

From an external viewpoint, it looks like our method involves getting the ball into the f50 under any means, win the contested ball and score goals.

  • This breaks down when:

  • We dont apply any pressure and the ball waltzes from our f50 to theirs.

  • We cant win a clearance in our f50

  • We cannot kick goals.

Bombing it in allows oppositions to set 1 or 2 extra behind the ball to intercept, to spoil, and to begin their turnover into attack. When we allow this as a set-up, it creates the carnage we saw yesterday.

1 in 5 entries end in a score. Unacceptable.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

  • CASEY: Williamstown

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Collingwood

Narrm time isn’t a standard concept—it’s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.

  • AFLW REPORT: St. Kilda

The Dees demolished the Saints in a comprehensive 74-pointshellacking.  We filled our boots with percentage — now a whopping 520.7% — and sit atop the AFLW ladder. Melbourne’s game plan is on fire, and the competition is officially on notice.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
