4th Quarter blues

4th Qtr

1 win (v eagles 6 goals to 5 goals against the winless soulless eagles)

8 losses (badly each time)

Someone please post out Season To Date “for and against” in the 4th quarter

It’s now unbearable !!

Lost in a whimper today v hawks

Should have been up at 3/4 time then lost by 6 goals. Simply overrun and looked insipid in the last quarter

Fitness? Seemed too tired to execute skills at all. Too many turnovers in the last quarter.

I feel numb

None of our permanent mids are hard fit, Oliver, Tracc, 2 kids on the wings.

Combine that with a few old boys (May, McDonald, Gawn) and some young talls and there’s no secret why it drops away.

Combine that with such a labour intensive style (not necessarily game plan but such lack of flow in our forward ball movement) and once there’s a little heaviness in the legs it gets very hard.

Fitness looks a very real issue now.

I think it's a big enough sample size now (9 rounds) to suggest that fitness is clearly an issue.

After 9 games, we've kicked a whopping 14 goals in our final quarters this year. 6 of those came last week against the Eagles where we still conceded five goals.

I posted this on the 'Which quarter/s IS it?' thread:

"But what about this in the first 5 rounds?...

Us 1.2, them 3.4

Us 1.2, them 8.1

Us 2.2, them 6.2

Us 0.3, them 4.2

Us 2.2, them 5.1

Yep, the last quarters, outscored by 20 goals.

Little to no media questioning. Little to no acknowledgement."

Since then,

Us 1.6, them 3.3

Us 1.4, them 4.1

Us 6.0, them 5.3

Us 1.1, them 6.5

According to Wheelo's post in the stats file, only four players (Pickett, Gawn, Rivers and May) rated above 4.0 in the final quarter. Tracc only rated 1.8 for the entire second half. Younger players seemed to tire based on these stats and Tracc's influence waned the longer the game went.

I think it's less fitness and more about attitude, but whatever it is it's a major concern. The Hawks would've seen the 3 quarter time score and thought (we've got them), meanwhile we were probably thinking, "oh no our 4th quarters aren't great".

Yep, our last quarter score sheets add up to 14.21 to 44.22. (Fwiw, I think you’ve overestimated our score by 1.1 in the 5th game.) By my calculation that’s a percentage of 29.4% for the collective last quarters over 9 games - a significant body of work.

While it’s shocking enough as a stat in its own rite, the big imbalance in accuracy between us and our opponents disclosed in that stat also indicates that they are having a lot better looks at goal than we are. That suggests they really are running over the top of us and having shots from much better positions/under less pressure.

Does anyone have Adelaide's stats on last q's?

...presumably as an indicator of a Burgess factor?

28.20 to 24.23 over 8 rounds. Won 6.

You can also cannot underestimate mental fatigue particularly as putrid goalkicking does not help the situation.

4th quarters have been dog poo. Massive problems and fitness team and program needs to be reviewed EOY.

Along with skills program it’s been shizen.

This sits purely in goodwins shoulders. His game plan is so inept that rhe players have nothing left in the last quarter.

Maintaining possession and winning the ball back is so labor intensive that the players are exhausted by 3/4 time.

Almost every possession we take is contested. No easy ball. Goodwin is killing us.

I know I'm a broken record about this, but surely moving our main training session one day closer to game day so that it's main training, Captain's run, to game day needs to be seriously questioned. Think we're one of the only teams in the league with this same schedule.

Those 4th quarter stats are horrendous. Selwyn Griffith has some explaining to do.

THIS × 5000

Why would you have your main hit out 48 hours prior to the big game.

I'm glad the media is picking up on this training schedule change too

What on earth is going on with our last quarters?

When you are down on skill you can over come with effort and determination. When the last quarter arrives players begin to tirer and effort and determinat drops a little and the other sides overall superior skill takes over. Hence the drop off in results. We get run over. All comes back too have too many average players on the field and too few higher skilled players.

What’s worse is the positions in games we’ve squandered from three quarter time.

We were ahead vs GWS.

12 points down vs North.

16 points down vs Geelong.

16 points down vs Essendon (and with good momentum)

1 point down vs Hawthorn.

We lost each of these games, bar GWS, by 6+ goals. We could have made a fist of all of them, and should have won vs GWS and Hawthorn. We ended up taking percentage beatings and blowing genuine chances for wins.

I hope we’re actively reviewing our training and fitness programs, because this isn’t good enough.

Great post mate.

I've had genuine concern about Selwyn since 2023.

There were injury concerns in 2023, which may have skewed the data, but we didn't seem anywhere near fit enough last year and this year is even worse. That's despite having more weeks off due to finishing outside the 8, and many of our guys completing pretty much full pre seasons.

It's hard to know externally, but the eye test suggests we're hopeless in defensive transition and @Tim 's stats above are damning.

I reckon it's time for a new fitness team.

Thankfully in the presser Goodwin said that the final qtrs would be a whole club review. To me that indicates that he thinks there's an issue with our high performance team.

I haven't heard the presser yet. That's interesting.

We could well be 5-4 if it weren't for final quarter fade outs.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

It’s late February. Two teams widely predicted to finish near the foot of the AFL table in 2026 face off against each other in sweltering 30-degree heat deep in outer suburbia in a match simulation with fresh new faces and uneven team numbers. There are no nearby sheep stations on offer; the result promises nothing more than bragging rights for the winner. Nevertheless, the loser appears hopelessly adrift, whereas the other seems to have found its footing after a couple of years of struggle – perhaps a hint at bigger things to come?
