NON-MFC: Round 01

Can’t believe the Tigers are paying $10 to win against Carlton.

They should be $30

Freo and Kangas are my smokies this week.

Who are you tipping this week in the real Round 1?

GcT4Ga6bkAM3nQL?format=jpg&name=large

  • baggers
  • dingley?
  • puddy tatts?
  • bears?
  • filth?
  • footscray?
  • crom?
  • them?
  • gc17?

these are probably all the 'favourites' and there's bound to be an upset or three

Can’t stand how the media are froffing over Hawthorn after 1 game and treating 21, 22, 23 year olds as naive children, when in fact they are grown men.

The Nick Watson coddling and love fest in spite of the quiet game is nauseating.

Hopefully Essendon do us all a solid.

If it’s all the same to you, how about we let the Hawks win this week and let Carlton do us all a solid next week coz Essendon 🤮

My vote is for an all-in brawl between Hawthorn and Essendon after three spiteful scoreless quarters that makes the "Line in the sand" game look like a summer picnic.

Outside of that, it could be a tough first couple of weeks for Dean Cox if the Lions get a hold of Sydney in their GF rematch.

Hardest tip is between the two wannabe but wont be’s - Pies vs Port.  Who is going to find the worst way to roll over in this one??

Preferring Carlton over Essendon?

That's like having to choose whether to have your sh*t sandwich cut into squares or triangles.

For me it’s like having to choose between a sh*t sandwich (cut any way) and a roast dinner. Again, coz Essendon.

Besides, one can’t simply masquerade as a Carlton supporter for 20 years without having a lingering soft spot for them, now can one?

I propose a compromise.

Hawthorn beat Essendon, but only after things get very ugly and a few serious incidents reduce Essendon's bench. Two or three key Hawks get suspended (Sicily, obviously) and it is just the 'exciting''up and coming' 'carefree' kids who come up against Carlton the next week. The mature Carlton side with it's immensely strong key position stocks put on a clinic and Hawthorn miraculously drop out of the 8 despite having played an extra game. Patrick Cripps punches Ginnivan and is given a two week suspension, ruling him out of the Brownlow.

In this scenario neither Essendon or Carlton are happy, but the Hawks really, really suffer. Best outcome.

Wow, this round of football is packed with games of the least possible interest to me. Adelaide St Kilda? Bulldogs North? Gold Coast v West Coast? Even Essendon and Hawthorn I wouldn't worry about watching so much as just wanting to know the injuries and suspensions pile up.

The Richmond backline is absurdly tall, what are they thinking

Apparently 80,000 tickets have been sold for Carlton’s open training session tomorrow night at the MCG.

I think that is 80,000 for the game vs Richmond.

Probably much lower than prior years Round 1.

  • PREVIEW: Fremantle

The dominant storyline coming out of Round One for Saturday Night’s clash at Optus Stadium centres on the influence of the big men. The spotlight naturally falls on two elite ruckmen who, five years ago, shared the stage in Melbourne’s memorable premiership triumph.

  • NON-MFC: Round 02

The compromised AFL fixture will get another test this week with the first lot of teams getting a bye after only two matches. Despite this Round 2 starts off with two cracking games as the Hawks host the Swans at the G on Thursday Night and then on Friday Night the Crows host the Bulldogs at Adelaide Oval. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • THE STATS FILES: St. Kilda

As part of the effort to trim the runtime of the regular podcast, we’ve been looking at which segments could be reshaped without losing what makes them valuable. One segment that naturally came into focus was Binman’s Stats Files. Not because it isn’t important; quite the opposite. It’s become such a substantial and much-loved part of the show that it deserves a little room to breathe.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.

Never in doubt!!! In Steven King’s first game at the helm of the Melbourne Football Club, the Dees outlasted Saints in a wild, momentum-swinging thriller at the MCG, running out 13-point winners.
