I mean if you read the full quote Houston never actually lied. They're all carefully crafted statements.

Even from Jacksons manager today it all alludes to him staying, but reading the words he actually stops short of saying that explicitly.

Good lord man! I certainly hope not.

If we haven't put games into young key backs and are relying on Tmac in 3 years time we are in deep trouble

Like May, the guy can barely bend below his knees!

Next year is it for Tmac. Been a wonderful player, premiership player, will be fondly remembered

Taking my comment far too literally there mate, it was meant in tongue in cheek - obviously Bell and Dodoro are scrubs.

Ultimately I’m just hoping for a positive net outcome should the trade eventuate

I can only laugh about how Dennis pagan must be viewing AFL youngsters these days. "Don't p##s down my back and tell me it's raining"!

crazy, tmac carrying us this year we would still be winless without him, i mentioned before not sure on what thread we should put lever and may on ice for the rest of the year since they are cooked, get them ready for next year and put them in the coaches box and learn a thing or two for when they retire, then we can look at adam’s and maybe kento although i don’t think he has the fitness after -3 weeks of preseason

I think you’re being a little over optimistic where Max is concerned, Lever 2 years?? That’s crazy talk!! He’s 29… and probably has a good 4 years left in him (injuries permitting), and I’ll be very surprised if TMac goes beyond next year.

But that’s just my opinion… it’d be pretty boring if we all agreed about everything.

Todd Goldstein is playing for Essendon. Not bad for an old fella.

Yes, I think he’s the exception to the rule, besides which, he’s now the second string ruck who’s only been brought into the team to fill the vacancy left by Draper.

I’d much prefer to see Max go out on top, rather than being relegated to being someone who sits at Casey waiting for an opportunity to get a run in the AFL.

I’m not a religious fella, but I’m praying that he’ll somehow manage to get another All Australian guernsey, so he can leave no doubt in anyone’s minds (not that there should be) as to who was the GOAT!!

Slight diversion: Which other players have left us and subsequently returned after playing with another AFL (or VFL) club? Carl Ditterich is one I can think of. I recall Gary Hardeman left and then returned, but I don't think he was at another VFL team in between. Anyone else?

If we're talking about other clubs, Jack Gunston. Only lasted one miserable season with Brisbane.

If we end up carrying this list of players for as long as you suggest, we are in a bad way.

I agree, but if he was traded to the Eagles, like Hunt, I think he would be just about a regular best 22 atm.

He therefore is worth something at least, which can be part of a trade involving several moving parts.

What did we get for Hunt? Taj is clearly not in our plans and has not really shown much when opportunity has arisen. I did not mind how he looked as a small back but he lacks the quality of disposal now required coming out of D50. He will surely be delisted at end of year and I doubt would be picked up by other clubs unless he showed significant impact at VFL level this year or at a state level post delisting and then was re-recruited.

From the Codesports article re Pickett:

Safe to say the Dockers are relatively confident given the links to their club – Shai Bolton, Isaiah Dudley, Quinton Narkle, whose partner Taylah Cubillo is the sister of Pickett’s partner Ardu Cubillo.

Basing any life decision on Quinton Narkle remaining at a club for longer than a couple of seasons seems fraught with danger.

Ok, Hunt went for 52 a third rounder and I thought about same for Woey, but agree we may get nothing.

I think if we brought in Jackson we could hope to get 2/3 years out of Max if he doesn’t sustain a major injury. He’s still running other rucks into the ground and covers and amazing amount of ground. He’s work rate is off the charts.

LJ would allow us to greatly reduce Max’s work load and I could see him being around for a while yet.

Those who think rucks don’t matter have you not been watching Max Gawn play for us? Seriously we’d be lucky to have won a game this year without him. As far as Luke Jackson goes he’s like Max, in that he’s more than a ruck. Max is a one man down the line marking machine. Jackson is a ruck rover. He actively helps the mids clear the ball, he can also play reasonably well as a tall forward. Whilst I’d hate to lose Koz it feels inevitable. To get Jackson would make it palatable to me. I think Jackson has a fair amount of upside and if you seriously think that as a ruckman he doesn’t make us better when Max retires, you don’t understand football.

28 minutes ago, whatwhat say what said:

there's no reason to think that gawn won't play for as long as goldstein

they're both aerobic beasts, which is part of the reason that they're so, so good in their dotage

Gawn loves keeping fit cycling, running etc. if the Jacko trade works out for us there is no reason he can't play till he's 38.

  • PREVIEW: Brisbane

And just like that, we’re Narrm again. Even though the annual AFL Sir Doug Nicholls Round which commemorates the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture to our game has been a welcome addition to our calendar for ten years, more lately it has been a portent of tough times ahead for we beleaguered Narrm supporters. Ever since the club broke through for its historic 2021 premiership, this has become a troubling time of the year for the club. For example, it all began when Melbourne rebranded itself as Narrm across the two rounds of the Sir Doug Nicholls Round to become the first club to adopt an Indigenous club name especially for the occasion. It won its first outing under the brand against lowly North Melbourne to go to 10 wins and no losses but not without a struggle or a major injury to  star winger Ed Langdon who broke his ribs and missed several weeks. In the following week, still as Narrm, the team’s 17 game winning streak came to an end at the hands of the Dockers. That came along with more injuries, a plague that remained with them for the remainder of the season until, beset by injuries, the Dees were eliminated from the finals in straight sets. It was even worse last year, when Narrm inexplicably lowered its colours in Perth to the Waalit Marawar Eagles. Oh, the shame of it all! At least this year, if there is a corner to turn around, it has to be in the direction of something better. To that end, I produced a special pre-game chant in the local Narrm language - “nam mi:wi winnamun katjil prolin ambi ngamar thamelin amb” which roughly translated is “every heart beats true for the red and the blue.” >y belief is that if all of the Narrm faithful recite it long enough, then it might prove to be the only way to beat the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba on Sunday. The Lions are coming off a disappointing draw at Marvel Stadium against a North Melbourne team that lacks the ability and know how to win games (except when playing Melbourne). Brisbane are, however, a different kettle of fish at home and have very few positional weaknesses. They are a midfield powerhouse, strong in defence and have plenty of forward options, particularly their small and medium sized players, to kick a winning score this week after the sting of last week’s below par performance.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeat  gallantly.

  • CASEY: Footscray

At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscray’s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last week’s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.

The Demons head back out on the road in Round 10 when they travel to Queensland to take on the reigning Premiers and the top of the table Lions who look very formidable. Can the Dees cause a massive upset? Who comes in and who goes out?

Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.
