He would’ve rotated between the forward line and midfield, helping give our starting mids some respite. If that ain’t depth, I don’t know what is.

Disagree.

AMW has played hbf in the senior side.

He may have gone forward, but I don't believe he was ever going to be playing midfield this year.

A terrible injury for him.

Looking at the online "vibe" on his delisting it concentrates mainly on his ACL injury and his slowness. He has the skills but doesn't get the ball enough.

Schwartz gave him a big wrap on his Melbourne training form so perhaps....

Good luck Jai C (only one nickname possible)

Your neck is safe Dof, for our recruiters have most definitely done a superb job 🙂

Apart from his obvious talents on the field he’s yet another hard-working, mature and dedicated player, and a lovely person, to boot.

On a personal note, thank goodness we got him because a couple of weeks ago I got him to sign my jumper 😅 At the time he asked if I was sure I wanted him to do it and I said, “Do you think I’m making a mistake or something?” He smiled and said “Well, I suppose I can just add my number when I get one.”

In stark contrast, after Jai had walked away, Chocco, being the smartarze that he is, said “Is that in permanent marker?” I said yes. He said, “Then you’re screwed.” 😅 Goody said “Don’t listen to him, you’re not screwed.” Turns out Goody was right!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JAI ❤️💙

Always love you positive, human stories ❤️

Love that we've added another leftie.

Hope his left foot kick is as long and as accurate as Hayden Young's long range missiles. That would be great.

I believe I read somewhere that AMW was meant to be covering McVee’s role whilst he was injured

Me too.  I wouldn't have any idea about how to pronounce "Sjai".

The new rule in English (that I created) is that the ‘J’ becomes silent after an ‘S’, so it would be pronounced ‘Sigh’ as in the old Saigon in South Vietnam

Feel bad for AMW  and he was looking good, after a good end to last year.

No for Jai to take his chances.  As for the AFL a sensible decision, but like others if a Carlton player was not injured, would they have made the same decision.  I think it was helped that the SSP closedown on Friday. I read the AFL clubs bought it forward as a request, but maybe there will be an exception for major injuries during the preseason matches to top up.  Would have been helpful for when Gus retired.

I think it helped that it wasn't just one club that was in this position. Honestly if it had just been Carlton it's equally possible that the AFL may have just said "bad luck". I do think that because BOTH Melbourne and Carlton had suffered these LTI there was more of an inclination for common sense to prevail. Now why the AFL chose to make it that day in the first place rather than leaving it to Monday after everyone had played is another question.

Really gutted for AMW, hopefully there can be good that comes from a really horrible injury.

Welcome to the club Culley!

Yes and they both played in the side last year in several games.

Hopefully AMW returns better than before and has a very good AFL career with us.

Funnily enough today is Jai Culley's Birthday on the 24th of February. 🎂

That's a pretty amazing Birthday gift to be put onto an AFL list (albeit due to unfortunate circumstances).

I wish Jai Culley all the best at the Demons! 👹🔴🔵

We have something in common!

So now he's on our list is he purely an inside mid? What's his kicking like? Does he drift forward? Could he force his way past Sparrow as that seems the obvious spot for him? Do we see him being good enough to force his way into the side or is he purely waiting for a few injuries? Is he another talented footballer who's too good for VFL but not quite good enough for AFL? What's his biggest strength besides being built like a bull?

Welcome aboard Jai! I remember watching him play in match sim a few weeks back and he was dominating in some parts of the contest and I was thinking to myself 'why isn't this guy on our list? he can seriously play'. Thankfully, now he is.

I doubt the old MCC members from many years ago could’ve foreseen both a Taj and a Jai playing for the MFC back in the 60s….

Good luck to the young fella!

Welcome aboard Jai, hopefully the start to a great second phase of your career

I feel like I'm missing something here.  Has dominated pre-season, has a number of weapons as a player, apparently is a good person, was well liked by all at West Coast... and yet was delisted by West Coast who are one of the bottom teams.

Why did they get rid of him?  Was it injury?  Off field stuff?

Recruited No.1 in 2022 mid season Draft, won a Rising Star Nomination in R6 2023 then ruptured his ACL in Round 8. Eagles delisted him at the end of 2024, played 12 games and kicked 7 goals for them. He may have taken a bit longer to get over his injury?

Awwww happy belated birthday P 💕

I hope it was a good one! It certainly was for Jai 🥳

I share a birthday with Jeffo. I told him this and added that of course there’s a few years between us. A fellow-sausage sizzler (and resident smart-arze) said “yeah, about seven decades.” 😅

You, me, Jai and Jeffo repping Pisces like the legends we are 😎

Big Footy opinions...

Great to see a local peninsula boy make it.   Not many tall midfielders are very quick.  Bontompelli, Petracca and Cripps are not and doesn't look like Langford will be.  I don't see pace as a problem for him as long as he gets the ball.

I hope you all feel sorry for me.

It is my birthday, sort of, at the end of the week, but only for a second at midnight on Friday the 28th, ending before Saturday the 1st of March.

Well that probably was the mid role Judd was  being trained in but  would guess that was not going to happen to AMW.

  • PREVIEW: Richmond

A few years ago, the Melbourne Football Club produced a documentary about the decade in which it rose from its dystopic purgatory of regular thrashings to the euphoria of a premiership victory. That entire period could have been compressed in a fast motion version of the 2025 season to date as the Demons went from embarrassing basket case to glorious winner in an unexpected victory over the Dockers last Saturday. They transformed in a single week from a team that put in a pedestrian effort of predictably kicking the ball long down the line into attack that made a very ordinary Bombers outfit look like worldbeaters into a slick, fast moving side with urgency and a willingness to handball and create play with shorter kicks and by changing angles to generate an element of chaos that yielded six goals in each of the opening quarters against Freo.

  • NON-MFC: Round 07

Round 7 gets underway in iconic fashion with the traditional ANZAC Day blockbuster. The high-flying Magpies will be looking to solidify their spot atop the ladder, while the Bombers are desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top eight. Later that evening, Fremantle will be out to redeem themselves after a disappointing loss to the Demons, facing a hungry Adelaide side with eyes firmly set on breaking into the top four. Saturday serves up a triple-header of footy action. The Lions will be looking to consolidate their Top 2 spot as they head to Marvel Stadium to clash with the Saints. Over in Adelaide, Port Adelaide will be strong favourites at home against a struggling North Melbourne. The day wraps up with a fiery encounter in Canberra, where the Giants and Bulldogs renew their bitter rivalry. Sunday’s schedule kicks off with the Suns aiming to bounce back from their shock defeat to Richmond, taking on the out of form Swans. Then the Blues will be out to claim a major scalp when they battle the Cats at the MCG. The round finishes with a less-than-thrilling affair between Hawthorn and West Coast at Marvel. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Fremantle

For this year’s Easter Saturday game at the MCG, Simon Goodwin and his Demons wound the clock back a few years to wipe out the horrible memories of last season’s twin thrashings at the hands of the Dockers. And it was about time! Melbourne’s indomitable skipper Max Gawn put in a mammoth performance in shutting out his immediate opponent Sean Darcy in the ruck and around the ground and was a colossus at the end when the game was there to be won or lost. It was won by 16.11.107 to 14.13.97. There was the battery-charged Easter Bunny in Kysaiah Pickett running anyone wearing purple ragged, whether at midfield stoppages or around the big sticks. He finish with a five goal haul.

  • CASEY: UWS Giants

The Casey Demons took on an undefeated UWS Giants outfit at their own home ground on a beautiful autumn day but found themselves completely out of their depth going down by 53 points against a well-drilled and fair superior combination. Despite having 15 AFL listed players at their disposal - far more than in their earlier matches this season - the Demons were never really in the game and suffered their second defeat in a row after their bright start to the season when they drew with the Kangaroos, beat the Suns and matched the Cats for most of the day on their own dung heap at Corio Bay. The Giants were a different proposition altogether. They had a very slight wind advantage in the opening quarter but were too quick off the mark for the Demons, tearing the game apart by the half way mark of the term when they kicked the first five goals with clean and direct football.

The Dees are back at the MCG on Thursday for the annual blockbuster ANZAC Eve game against the Tigers. Can the Demons win back to back games for the first time since Rounds 17 & 18 last season? Who comes in and who goes out?
