He sounds like a good prospect to develop. Can he play down back?

I'd want us to look at the state leagues for a defender. Key position depth has the potential to derail our season. TMac is old, while Disco and Petty get injured regularly.

Tom Campbell has outlasted a hell of a lot of other AFL/VFL rucks, four clubs lots of coaches as previously pointed out. Must be a hell of a bloke and Clubman and a decision to step down to free up a mid season list spot is another great gesture. If this is so Good on you Tom, hope we keep him around the club.👍😇

PS ( we have spots for a tall back, tough mid and spare ruck), anyone else looking to move on.😁

If he is to retire, hopefully the club could find an off-field role for him. Something in the development/mentoring space would be great his experience and humanity is invaluable.

Would be good to see him working with Moose and Kalani and also helping the AFLW team.

You'd imagine McAdam is in the same boat. Hasn't played in two years and is now listed as TBC in the latest injury report.

Both players can probably be retired on a long term injury plan with only some part going into the salary cap (small benefit needing AFL approval) but it should be enough to fund a mid year recruitment

probably see him as more of a forward needs a lot of work on his speed obviously cause he is huge, imo i wouldn’t really get a key defender. all of our talls apart from aj and lever can play either side of the ground and are very versatile. i would bring kento in this week for petty

Clearly we kept Tom on the list for 2026 because he is a quality person and teammate, and someone we thought could have a positive effect on our young players.

He would be extremely silly at his age and with a young family to risk further damage by attempting to play again, so this would be a good decision for all concerned.

I can probably put two and two together here, but inside word or just guesswork?

This started emanating within the past 48 hours, we want to have two list spots open for the mid-season draft. It sounds like there's an acknowledgement now that there are individuals who will realistically not get on the park in final year of contract.

I feel for Tom because the intentions were good getting him over here. Neck injuries are one of those rest of your life considerations though.

All the best with whichever way he chooses.

If he does pull the plug then it wouldn't surprise to see him at Essendon AFLW. His best mate Ben Brown is their head of development. His side of town too.

With all respect to Tom (and another potential retiree) it definitely makes sense from the club’s perspective

The MSD can be such a valuable tool for filling gaps on your list, particular when you look at some of the players who have been taken there in recent years (Disco, Culley and Kentfield for example)

Appreciate the intel!

They should really start a mid season trade period. 2 days.

Blokes like Briggs at GWS wasting away when the Dogs have zero rucks. You'd have to use future picks but it's doable

It all seems like a terrible shame to me. He seems like a top bloke, and the neck injury must have been very serious, so I really feel for him. And if he does retire, it just shows his character even more.

Weird! I wonder if they have bugs installed in my apartment, as my son and I were discussing precisely that, just yesterday evening!

Anyone want their fortune told? Mates’ rates!

Are you familiar the with Soviet joke about the guy talking to the power socket?

Nope, benefits top clubs only, jump ship now play finals,

benefits vic clubs, more players willing to move in a week than head to perth or qld

how about the dogs just have more than 1 senior ruck on their list, just poor planning u cant give them a get out of jail for their own mistakes

some good points

but the dogs have 2 rucks injured and 2 others not quite ready.

I personally think injury/luck plays too big a part in who wins the flags

Players that don’t get a game at big teams can also be traded. eg Sharp and Dersken types to benefit their careers and lower teams

I think it becomes a slippery slope like the sub/interchange expansion. If you can trade then, why not pre finals when a key player loss robs you of a flag chance? Then why not every week?

Also there will eventually be a case that goes the other way. A side trades away a 3rd ruck who is banging an impossible door down then injuries hit the first and second stringers and they get left in the same ruckless boat.

Prob agree with most of what you write DD but very against midseason trade period. The footy "journalists" / media salivate over it but only because it will generate lots of clicks etc

I think it will further diminish club loyalty which ultimately is worse for the game.

This is my feeling, too. Only a fortnight ago he was talking about BBB and how well the Essendon gig is going. He even said he believes BBB will one day get a head coach job and I immediately got the feeling TC would figure in this somehow.

I think the mid season draft is a fantastic opportunity for a free hit at people who missed the draft for whatever reason. Identify our needs, and get a young bloke in for half a season on top training, coaching and games at Casey and see how they develop. I have no issues with Shane McAdam but he is a spot on our list which we can use to develop a player who might actually play some games for us. Tom has been an excellent servant for us, but if he is going to retire, surely now is the time. 2 spots, 2 defenders to find and work on.
