With Greg Stafford now departing the Demons, who should we look for?

I definitely think we need a massive shake up of ALL our assistant coaches.

Who is currently available or would we endeavour to try to recruit to the Melbourne Football Club?

Here's a list of a few names that we should look at considering to get to the Demons.

1) Justin Leppitsch - has done some amazing work at both Richmond and Collingwood after his failed stint as Brisbane senior coach

2) Cameron Bruce - the former Demon has been assistant coach at Hawthorn and now Brisbane with quite a bit of success

3) Daniel Giansiracusa - has a impressive assistant coaching record at both the Bulldogs and the Bombers and might be looking for a fresh start

4) Steve Johnson - the former Cat was a very crafty forward and has done assistant coaching before.

5) Dylan Grimes - has recently retired from the Tigers and may be interested in being an assistant coach

6) Adam Simpson - the former Eagles Premiership coach might be interested in returning to Victoria and doing assistant coaching

7) Tom Hawkins - is about to retire after Geelong's finals campaign and may be interested in a new challenge at a new club

8) Nathan Buckley - is probably happy in the media, but it's always worth at least asking the question if he was interested in becoming an assistant coach again

9) Trent Cotchin - the champion Richmond Captain seems to be mainly doing media work, but it's always worthwhile at least inquiring if he wants to do assistant coaching

10) Brendon Bolton - is highly underrated due to being an unsuccessful coach at Carlton, has done great work at both Hawthorn and now at Collingwood behind the scenes

Anyway, these are all merely suggestions. But I am curious to hear what other Demons supporters think we should look at targeting to bolster our coaching group to assist Simon Goodwin once the off-season starts after AFL finals.

The primary focus should be to select high quality football people that will make the Demons a better team for next year.

I believe I read somewhere on the forum that the Dees were interested in Jason Davenport who’s the Development Manager at GWS.

Someone, anyone, with some new ideas and ways to change the game the way MaCrae and Leppitsch did with Collingwood and Hardwick et al did with the Tigers. We need the next one, absolutely have to get this right. We need to adapt but we still need to play to our best players strengths. Throw the big money at this person, they're going to be pivotal if we're going to have success. We can't be playing catch up, we have to jump in front of the Hawks and Dogs who both look set for some success. Time to be brave and bold I think.

I’d love Graham Wright at the club. Smart operator with runs on the board. Maybe he could replace Alan Richardson as part of the shake up.

He’s burnout and left Collingwood to take a cushy job at the afl before possibly getting involved with Tassie.

I significantly doubt we change Pert, Richo or of course Goody.

We have a vacancy at forward coach and I hope we add or change elsewhere in the coaching panel too. And the recruiting department.

I would be putting in a phone call to Adam Simpson, and trying to get Nev Jetta back to the club.

on these...

leppitsh - not leaving, moving into a senior football administration role, will be groomed as a future football ceo

bruce, gia, stevie j - worth a conversation

simpson - will he want to move his family back straight away? how old are the kids etc.?

grimes, hawkins, cotchin - have any expressed any interest in coaching?

bolton - is he leaving the filth?

the one i'm keen to speak to from a back office perspective is simon mathews, who was 2nd choice as tigs' new ceo replacing gale, is incredibly highly regarded, and would seem to be a logical fit within a club such as ours

Hawkins to replace Stafford pls.

If Luke Hodge was out of the media and doing the rounds at club level i think he'd make a superb Assistant Coach or something like head of game day strategy / review etc.

Has a fantastic football brain and would be worth every cent paid imho.  A bit like Choco but would come with a more recent pedigree to boot.  One as long as your arm.  He could've been a great head coach also if had ventured down that path.

Chaplin and McQualter have contracts. Would like to see McQualter shift to forwards and a new voice working with the midfields.

Given we are tactically outcoached week to week, we need to look at the Opposition Strategy and Analysis role currently held by Sam Bradford too.

Someone who is not afraid to challenge the status quo. This season was disappointing for various reasons and really need someone with fresh ideas and not afraid to challenge our current gamestyle. Tom Hawkins could be that guy.

Mc Qualter may be contracted but is on the Eagles job's shortlist. The club wouldn't hold him to that if he gets a senior gig. We may have 2 senior assistants to replace!

So much for Wright having burnout!! Where did you get that idea.? He has signed on as Deputy CEO at the Blues the second biggest Club and to take over iwhen Cook retires at the end of 2025.

Boy if he has burnout as you stated he won’t last long in that furnace up in Royal Parade. They know how to full pressure their Coaches and Administrators.

To be fair he has been away  this year mostly from the Pies and was overseas so burnout could well be gone with some European culture and charm reviving his love for the sport.

That’s what was reported. Turns out he just wanted out of Collingwood.

That said, I expect deputy CEO at Carlton will actually be pretty cruisy for the year. Then it’s game on when he takes the full time job.

What about Ben Brown as forwards coach? Done a great job with the women. Gall and Campbell have come on leaps and bounds.

I love Jonesy but is he really the type of strategic thinker we need as midfield coach? He's been in media since retirement, has he done any other work in coaching?

but the vibe would be immaculate

It would be wise not to appoint any new assistant coaches until the Football Dept review is completed.

Personally I'd prefer it if we didn't appoint former players who Goodwin has coached. We need some new ideas when it comes to gameplan and matchday tactics.

Fully agree , except for ben Brown in some capacity.

I'll be very happy with Teague, Bassett and Chaplin as line coaches, and if necessary, Jonesy as a development coach or cultural mentor.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
