It's a thread about our coach. If the gatekeepers don't like the discussion, don't read it 🤷

I am not in the ‘sack Goodwin’ band wagon but if we don’t go 4-3 in the last seven I’ll be pretty disappointed

However …

If we lose to this north line up missing three of their top handful of players I will probably climb aboard

Not sure there's any room left in the boat

Honestly, I'm staggered that there are some amongst us that resent posters bringing up our shortfalls. It's a forum, for discussing our observations and opinions. I get that it may seem repetitive but it is truly representative of what the coach and team has dished up ad nauseam for many seasons.

The irony is that the same posters are willing to turn up and put up with the same deficiencies each game.

Don't like it, don't read it.

Sorry Simon but don't let the door hit you on the way out.

And take all the skills coaches with you.

Ta.

Well done to the coach today. A further extension of his contract would be appropriate.

I agree. Say what you will about some of the potential mistakes and holes in our current situation but I'd honestly given up on ever seeing a premiership.

So I think Goodie will always have my respect even if others also helped.

Like finger nails down a blackboard.

Sitting there today at half time and they’d thoroughly given me the 💩 I had the thought that maybe we all - players, coaches, supporters - were so focused on that one premiership that we got comfortable/complacent.

It was a good result today however I’m depressed at the thought of sitting through 2026 watching exactly what we saw in today’s first half. Which is what happens if Goodwin is there in 2026. However much I appreciate and respect Goodwin for 2021 the moment has passed and he’s not the future.

That’s not what I’m debating.

We were “a chance for a flag” in 22-23 but these days those seasons get cast away as failures by those who succumb to the “we should have won multiple flags” rhetoric.

And at any rate, for all the reinventing and competing they’ve done, my previous post remains true. If Geelong doesn’t win it this year, that’ll be 1 flag in 14 seasons of them being “competitive” under Scott. I’m not criticising them, I’m merely making the point that flags are hard to win.

They were failures, all we had to do was not bomb the ball inside fwd 50 every single time.

Extraordinary. Our trajectory as a football club is atrocious. And still with 15 premiership players. We are on a downhill slide and there is nothing but the same old issues repeating themselves.

Then the happy clappers come out and say 'Oh, it takes time to change a game plan'

A new game style is barely recognisable and senior players have been the worst offenders in terms of poor performance. Fritsch played a great game on the weekend but has been terrible for the better part of 2 years. Anyone that says its not acceptable to call it out is deluded.

Another measure that is terrible is to look at players that have improved (excluding 1st year players). The list is staggeringly small

All these things are on the coaching panel.

Beating the 16th team should see him made coach for life

As always, it goes both ways.

There are plenty who “resent” anyone who thinks Goodwin should coach in 2026. Or who disagree with the argument that we should have won multiple flags.

I argued earlier in this thread that the gap between the top 6 finishes we had in 2022-23 and top 4 finishes isn’t as huge as people on here now argue. For that I got called a “Goody acolyte”. I never said a word about my view on whether Goodwin is going well right now or not.

Why is it that anyone who isn’t flatly negative is taken to “put up with the same deficiencies” just because they turn up each week?

The nuance is gone. It seems you either have to be outright positive about everything, or outright negative about everything. Post anything that isn’t fully negative and you’re a “happy clapper”.

Unfortunately this seems to be the case in all walks of life these days.

The nuance is gone.

I'd rate Goodys tenure as

One great season - 2021

One good season - 2018

Three underperformed seasons - 2017, 2022-23

Four bad seasons - 2019-20, 2024-25

Two seasons out of nine where we went above par is not a good strike rate (especially considering he wasn't coming in at the start of the rebuild like most coaches do).

Forever thankful for the flag but besides the 2021 season I don't think he's got the most out of this list.

I think this is fair. Maybe you could argue 2018 was bordering on great given how young we were and that we lost Hogan on the eve of finals. I'm much less impressed with 2022 and 2023 than most (because I just don't buy the "we were unlucky" in finals line), but think "underperformed" is a decent description.

A flag rightfully gives you latitude as a coach. Especially if you've got the first in 57 years. I don't agree at all with the idea we missed a trick by failing to sack Goodwin after 22 or 23. Or that we fluked or stole a flag in 21 - nobody flukes premierships. I am, however, very open to the idea that the list has underperformed - not because I expected three flags, but because I expected a longer, more successful run of finals appearances when it became clear we had a well above average list.

I guess if you take the more extravagant emotional stuff out of this thread, it's really comes down to how much post-flag latitutde is fair. And is it fair to take the whole coaching tenure into account or just everything since the peak?

I think it's reasonable to look at the full nine years. And one of the reasons I can't see how Goodwin can stay beyond next year is that five finals wins in 200 games isn't a particularly good record.

He has to be reappointed. Then when Tassie joins we can go from the 18th most inaccurate team to the 19th most inaccurate team.

A proud trajectory started in 2022.

A representation of the five levels of Demonland posting. I make no comment as to which posters belong to each category.

I was specifically referring to posters that were complaining about having to read a lot what they see are the same arguments. Maybe my last sentence or two was unnecessary but the point was that these discussions are okay on a discussion board.

Agree to all this but supporters are allowed to enjoy a win every now and again aren’t we?

Who wouldn't have enjoyed yesterday's win ?

I did ..twice. Upon seeing final score and later watching replay as was working through game.

Wins like yesterday are good for the Kids, the new Young Supporters

@dazzledavey36 being a case in point. Good Crowd, lots of colour and motion. He won’t forget it either.

I vividly remember the first Demons game i saw

Round 1 1971 v South Melbourne and we absolutely pumped them, after the Game i got taken into “The Rooms” and actually got to shake hands with players.

Met The Coach Ian Ridley, who wore the long Trench Coat, like Norm Smith. Great Memories for a 7 year old. Kids don’t forget

Tom Sparrow won’t forget it either…

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
