Time to go Goody?

Yep definately time for a NEW coach!

If Mr Kane Cornes points this out, Goody must go!

Tim Lamb should sell Oliver with our first round pick to free up money.

Let’s employ Kane as an advisor, policy maker and inspirational motivation speaker.

I’ll ask a genuine question, did any of those coaches, apart from Longmire, get handed a solid list and a strong culture off the back of a succession plan?

Goodwin was handed the reins to a club that was on the up thanks to Paul Roos and some solid recruiting. All of the above coaches (apart from Longmire) came into clubs that were heading south.

You actually think these coaches haven’t been given strong lists? Melbourne fans are delusional about us having this unbeatable list. Our list has been very good, not the most outstanding list though. Hawthorn of 2012-2015 was miles better

IMO the clear number 1 factor isn't fitness, it's skills. We turn it over far too often across our own half-forward line and get burnt the other way because we're not set up deep defensively. Meanwhile our own poor skills mean that when we take the ball of our opponents we don't generate enough shots and then we don't convert them.

I also think another key factor is our woeful midfield. We concede too much territory from being so poor at stoppage that we're playing too much of the game in our back half and spending too much time and energy defending, leading to more poor kicks out and more turnovers.

The speed and skills are a major issue. For most of the year we've forced a good turnover. Burn all our effort/energy springboarding out in really good shape. Cough it up under minimal pressure and no tickets left to get back. Incredibly energy sapping if getting no reward (and punished) for your rebounding efforts.

That combined with getting smashed at clearance/stoppage gifting so many quick/clean entries to a defence that relies on intercepting has been a recipe for disaster.

Ive resigned myself to 2025 not being much better but 2026 could be ok providing we don't give it all up for Houston.

We must prioritize a better list supported by a better (creative and adaptable) coach, team of coaches/trainers, player attitudes and skills. Already, it is three years too late. Let us not have a fourth year of expectant misery.

No. We are not AFL supported so full wedge is on the hook.

Number one is fitness. It's an incredibly taxing style of play aerobically and I don't think we have ever got fit enough. The pies have struggled on turnover for the same reason.

Not disagreeing, but two of the main reasons why fitness can be down are:

- missed training/pre-season/matches through injury etc

- younger players who have limited pre-seasons and haven't built up the deep stamina you need at AFL level

There's not too many out there who don't fall into one of those two categories.

I’m all down for getting a better list and I definitely think our trades recently have been questionable, but that’s not on the coach.

Our 2016 list had 9 of our eventual 23 premiership players on it.

Ridiculous to suggest Goodwin took over some sort of Rolls Royce.

Yep. Goody I think is a good head coach, but we need to change up our assistant coaches I think. We need the best tactical coach we can find who can communicate from up in the box. Stafford also has to go, we need a genuine forward coach. Chaplin I’m not sure about, but we have been one of the best defensive sides so would be harsh to move him on but fresh eyes may be needed.

Reckon he does have a say (one of a few) but who has the final say?

It would be interesting to know.

Speed and Skills work together

Watch GW$ at The ‘G against us, they were so good at run and spread, which is how we played the Majority of ‘21

2-3 players running, providing coverage for the Ball Carrier

Where has all that gone….?

What these last 3 years have shown we keep playing 21 football and it is showing how bad our skills and run are, when they tried to change it the players were unable to implement because of those deficiencies and now we have gone back to 21 football, big changes are needed to improve moving forward.

I 100% agree

In fact I'd say they are the the two key reasons.

Won't stop Selwyn getting some heat but.

Speed and skills and we are missing one other ingredient football decision making, we have some but not enough they are to quick to dish off and put other players under pressure.

Yes, that is a lack of confidence, that’s exactly why you need the running options for cover

That’s such a ridiculous argument.  I mean by 2013 Hawthorn only had 9 of their 2008 premiership list still playing.  It just happened they were all absolute A-graders which is what premiership teams are built around.

Same with us. It was actually 10 players and included Max, Tracc, Viney, Salem, Brayshaw, and Oliver.  Also Jesse Hogan who turned into May and Sparrow.   That was the core of a premiership list.   Also included Hibberd, Harmes, TMac, and ANB, as well as Joel Smith and Hunt that were injured, and of course Jones.

Goody had a lot of A-graders and top 10 draft (and top 3) picks to build premiership team with.

Perspective - 14 teams cannot go out in straight sets.

There’s also ‘overtraining’ which may not have happened as a result of this year alone, however the cumulative effect of 3-4 years of the most taxing gameplan could certainly do it.

I have been pretty convinced we have been going about things in a fashion that’s far more difficult than it needs to be.

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
