We only have to pay him for 6 months. New rule from last year.ย

Iโ€™ll ask a genuine question, did any of those coaches, apart from Longmire, get handed a solid list and a strong culture off the back of a succession plan?

Goodwin was handed the reins to a club that was on the up thanks to Paul Roos and some solid recruiting. All of the above coaches (apart from Longmire) came into clubs that were heading south.

You actually think these coaches havenโ€™t been given strong lists? Melbourne fans are delusional about us having this unbeatable list. Our list has been very good, not the most outstanding list though. Hawthorn of 2012-2015 was miles better

IMO the clear number 1 factor isn't fitness, it's skills. We turn it over far too often across our own half-forward line and get burnt the other way because we're not set up deep defensively. Meanwhile our own poor skills mean that when we take the ball of our opponents we don't generate enough shots and then we don't convert them.

I also think another key factor is our woeful midfield. We concede too much territory from being so poor at stoppage that we're playing too much of the game in our back half and spending too much time and energy defending, leading to more poor kicks out and more turnovers.

The speed and skills are a major issue. For most of the year we've forced a good turnover. Burn all our effort/energy springboarding out in really good shape. Cough it up under minimal pressure and no tickets left to get back. Incredibly energy sapping if getting no reward (and punished) for your rebounding efforts.

That combined with getting smashed at clearance/stoppage gifting so many quick/clean entries to a defence that relies on intercepting has been a recipe for disaster.

Ive resigned myself to 2025 not being much better but 2026 could be ok providing we don't give it all up for Houston.

We must prioritize a better list supported by a better (creative and adaptable) coach, team of coaches/trainers, player attitudes and skills. Already, it is three years too late. Let us not have a fourth year of expectant misery.

No. We are not AFL supported so full wedge is on the hook.

Number one is fitness. It's an incredibly taxing style of play aerobically and I don't think we have ever got fit enough. Theย pies have struggled on turnover for the same reason.

Not disagreeing, but two of the main reasons why fitness can be down are:

- missed training/pre-season/matches through injury etc

- younger players who have limited pre-seasons and haven't built up the deep stamina you need at AFL level

There's not too many out there who don't fall into one of those two categories.

Iโ€™m all down for getting a better list and I definitely think our trades recently have been questionable, but thatโ€™s not on the coach.ย

Our 2016 list had 9 of our eventual 23 premiership players on it.

Ridiculous to suggest Goodwin took over some sort of Rolls Royce.

Yep. Goody I think is a good head coach, but we need to change up our assistant coaches I think. We need the best tactical coach we can find who can communicate from up in the box. Stafford also has to go, we need a genuine forward coach. Chaplin Iโ€™m not sure about, but we have been one of the best defensive sides so would be harsh to move him on but fresh eyes may be needed.

Reckon he does have a say (one of a few) but who has the final say?

It would be interesting to know.

Speed and Skills work togetherย

Watch GW$ at The โ€˜G against us, they were so good at run and spread, which is how we played the Majority of โ€˜21

2-3 players running, providing coverage for the Ball Carrierย

Where has all that goneโ€ฆ.?

What these last 3 years have shown we keep playing 21 football and it is showing how bad our skills and run are, when they tried to change it the players were unable to implement because of those deficiencies and now we have gone back to 21 football, big changes are needed to improve moving forward.

I 100% agreeย

In fact I'd say they are the the two key reasons.

Won't stop Selwyn getting some heat but.

Speed and skills and we are missing one other ingredient football decision making, we have some but not enough they are to quick to dish off and put other players under pressure.ย

Yes, that is a lack of confidence, thatโ€™s exactly why you need the running options for cover

Thatโ€™s such a ridiculous argument. ย I mean by 2013 Hawthorn only had 9 of their 2008 premiership list still playing. ย It just happened they were all absolute A-graders which is what premiership teams are built around.ย

Same with us. It was actually 10 players and included Max, Tracc, Viney, Salem, Brayshaw, and Oliver. ย Also Jesse Hogan who turned into May and Sparrow. ย  That was the core of a premiership list. ย  Also included Hibberd, Harmes, TMac, and ANB, as well as Joel Smith and Hunt that were injured, and of course Jones. ย

Goody had a lot of A-graders and top 10 draft (and top 3) picks to build premiership team with. ย

I'm not in the 'sack Goody' camp but going out in straight sets two years in a row compounds the issue. I still believe he can turn it around next year, we just need some pizzaz, if you will.

Thereโ€™s also โ€˜overtrainingโ€™ which may not have happened as a result of this year alone, however the cumulative effect of 3-4 years of the most taxing gameplan could certainly do it.

I have been pretty convinced we have been going about things in a fashion thatโ€™s far more difficult than it needs to be.

And it's all Goody's fault, like, I mean, players have 'chequed out', um, the recruiters are all Orangutans, anti-deluvian, the coaches are all part-time bozos, not to mention so totally incompetents they weren't there at all in 2021, and Viney, Sparrow and Chandler and Oliver are milking the system to build great investment portfolios. Oi Weh, the MFC is mired in duck muck, is all I can say, they are all nincompoopers, and it's got nothing to do wid the luck of the AFL Charlatans, the Draw, or injuries, just plain incompetence. I mean, even noncompoopers win flags, don't they? Like Sheedy and Jeans and even Joyce, and what about Malcolm the Blight...

Sheedy and Blight = footy geniuses.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
