It's not going to be that...

unfortunately it's now about simply getting a mega contract off our books. The picks will be middling to reasonable without being high

your feelings or your info DJ?

Well unless we are trying to offload his contract to make space for another mega star player, this will absolutely not fly with supporters.

Would you be happy with trading Clarry for unders, watch him help Geelong contend YET AGAIN, and all we get out of it is salary cap relief which we don't need?

The members of this club have spoken loudly this year. We lost 10,000 members, and attendance dropped off. Trade Clarry for unders and watch the bottom fall out.

IF we trade Clarry, it has to result in someone very good coming back in return. Not more mid tier draft picks.

Unfortunately the club will realise that if he stays we have a depreciating asset. The window is shut and it's time to think beyond the next two years.

Reading between the train tracks there is a mega undercurent of discontent in the upper echelons of the playing group.

Wish it wasn't so but it is becoming damningly obvious

just my feelings in the sense that we have three mega contracts on our books in the form of Brayshaw, Oliver and Petracca.

With the benefit of hindsight (form and injury) they were all two years too long.

Time now to look to the future

In the case of Brayshaw the AFL unfortunately want to get rid of long contracts (over 5 years) and we will be used as the scapegoat

So Tom Morris says this:

But then Jon Ralph’s article says this:

“Despite rival clubs continuing to ask about his availability the Demons will not trade the 27-year-old and had believed Oliver was content to remain at the club.

The club and Oliver were in contact again on Monday, and a player contracted for six more years had told them he was happy to stay at Melbourne.

While Oliver is a high-maintenance player who will always need care from the club the Demons are not interested in trading him.“

They don’t appear to me to be capable of both being true.

Edit: Ralph also says:

“Oliver had considered whether to go overseas on a training camp but has spent time with family in Echuca and continued training.

He has had to have his hand monitored by medicos to assess its progress after surgery for an injury that impacted his season along with rib and knee injuries.

Melbourne’s Lachie Hunter retired last week so the Demons are even more aware of their need to boost their midfield stocks.“

A future that may start to look a bit too much like our past I fear.

Still doesn’t change the fact that unless you are replacing him with another asset then its all for nothing unless you only care about playing a million under the cap next year to make the balance sheet look better. As to discontent unless we have players saying it’s Oliver or me and those players are higher on the totem poll than Oliver then it makes even less sense

To whit do you trade in a Ferrari for a new VW golf because it broke down and is a deprecating asset

First rounder and Jhye Clarke

Do we really think he will be the player he once was? If not, then why not let him leave?

He simply did not step up once Trac went down

Would you have rather lost them to free agency? Because that was the alternative.

clark hasn't shown much at this stage

i'll take sdk and future 1st and 2nd, which we then on trade to get higher up in to this year's first round

i'm personally not too concerned if oliver stays or goes at this point

it would be very sad, but clearly something needs to change in our playing ranks

I would love someone to ask Kane point blank why exactly we should move heaven and earth to get him off our books. There have been a lot of implications made but right now at this point I want to hear his case. The people he is chatting with on these shows just take those implications and run with the narrative.

My case right now is that I don't want to die wondering and give him the full pre season he deserves. There will be plenty of other years for the media to have a crack at this again, they're not gonna sell any less papers, subscriptions or clicks this year I promise.

My source has reiterated that Geelong have or will offer considerable elements beyond football life. Dont shoot the messenger, but if he goes, then plenty on here will also go including ME!

There’s plenty of evidence as to his fitness/injuries to explain why he didn’t step up this year.

Surely we wait to see if a proper pre-season makes a difference rather than shipping off for unders.

Out of courtesy, I think Oliver/his team should have provided a heads up

paging @Dannyz @Chook in Perth @goodwindees and the other recent Mailman (see what I did there Soundgarden fans) for the goss

Clarry told his management he would like to see how this move could look/work

Happy to stay but assessing his options. Geelong surely wouldn't have $1M in cap sapce to pay him with Smith coming across.

Looks like you were right.

However after a lifetime supporting this club, given what I have invested emotionally,  I will never give up on them, even if Clarry, my favourite player leaves and anyone else for that matter.

I have made my bed with the Dees and I will lie in it forever.

No pre-season and being injured might have something to do with that.

Shannon Neale is devloping into a handy forward ruck. would be happy to see him included in any deal if possible

“Make no mistake, the Dees are happy for him to have a look (around)."

@tommorris32 💩💩💩💩💩provides the latest info surrounding Clayton Oliver and a potential move to Geelong.

It's Game Day and the Demons have a chance to notch up their third consecutive win — something they haven’t done since Round 5, 2024. But to do it, they’ll need to exorcise the Demons of last year’s disastrous trip out West. Can the Dees continue their momentum, right the wrongs of that fateful clash, and take another step up the ladder on the road to redemption?

  • FEATURE: 1925

A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.

  • PREVIEW: West Coast

Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

  • NON-MFC: Round 08

Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.
