PaulRB - I have been waiting to see the MQualter influence mentioned as I have not observed him in previous years and don't quite know what he offers as a point of difference. Can you please elaborate for my education. Many thanks 1 Quote

Cranky Franky 2,270 Posted July 13, 2024 Posted July 13, 2024 We won despite the idiotic decision to ruck Petty. Petty did mostly SFA apart from falling over a lot & we had to move JVR onto the ball to get some drive. This left the fwd line short & allowed McKay to dominate. We got away with it due to the wet conditions. 9 3 Quote
middleagedemon 325 Posted July 13, 2024 Posted July 13, 2024 (edited) Obviously a tongue in cheek thread title. I think it was a risk that paid off, which is sometimes all coaching selections are. I mean, it most certainly wasn't his selection that won us the game. And the decision to ruck Petty was clearly the wrong one and even bringing him back was a questionable call given his output. All I can say is they must have absolutely no faith in Fullerton in the wet. I can't imagine what he must have thought after being brought across to cover for Max and the potential of playing with him at times. Van Rooyen's physicality and desire to just halve contest was monumental and is the sole reason Draper didn't continue on his rampage. But like others, I'm not sure it was a risk worth taking given how valuable he is to us atm up forward. And they're the kind of games ruckmen get banged up and injured. The win came from our sheer desire to win contest and pressure all night. Which was huge. Edited July 13, 2024 by middleagedemon 1 Quote

Yeah even Goodwin admitted they had to play JVR in the ruck more then they initially had planned which explains they knew fair early that Petty wasn't cutting it in the ruck. The other point was McKay was able to get off the leash purely because JVR wasn't able to spend the time up forward in being able to not only contain him, but also engage in the contest when it came down. As much as JVR turned the game for us in the ruck, it also leaves us vulnerable down forward at the same time. Kudos for Turner, Melky, Kozzie and Fritra for standing up. 8 Quote

But let's enjoy the moment till freo. Nothing but pride for this club. Huge and I mean huge hug from Chandler with Kate at the race as the team left the field. Wonderful. 1 2 Quote
beelzebub 23,392 Posted July 13, 2024 Posted July 13, 2024 As posted otherwise... yes that was a good win Goodwin. He made some clever calls and lucked out with some, and the weather. But kudos, that was most likely the outcome if the gods came to the party. Credit where due. Genius ? .. i wince. Geater credit to those out there on a rubbish night. 1 Quote
Swooper1987 3,322 Posted July 13, 2024 Posted July 13, 2024 He's a premiership coach - the only Melbourne premiership coach in my lifetime and he deserves to be respected as such. I think his footy acumen is desperately underrated. Last night was an interesting one. I watched from mu usual spot on the second tier right on the members wing. Petty was uncompetitive in the ruck as I expected and Draper did as he liked. 9 disposals, three clearances, 3 marks and 9 hitouts v Petty 1 handball and 3 hitouts. It looked an Essendon game. But JVR stood up in the second and absolutely turned it around. 5 disposals, 3 marks and 4 hitouts v Draper 4 disposals, no marks and 7 hitouts effectively neutralised what was the biggest advantage Essendon had. Our gut runners went to work - Langdon, Windsor and ANB. Oliver, after a horrid first quarter showed glimpses of the 3 time AA, 4 time B&F Clayton and Melksham led the front half magnificently. So overall, Simon had a good night. Petty is not a centre bounce ruck and he has proven that a few times. But as Draper tired her became more competitive in short bursts later in the game. Goody's faith in Petty was misplaced but as a good coach does, he righted the ship. Kudos to him. 13 1 Quote

Deecisive 1,709 Posted July 13, 2024 Posted July 13, 2024 the team won even goodies brainless idea of using petty in the ruck. for someone on the ball so much and supposedly a leading target for kickins etc he did stuff all, that is because it is not his position. the rest of the team stood up and need to be commended for a great team effort. if we had someone taller who could wrestle and event punch the ball away for the taller essendon rucks who were marking everything when it was dry then we may have done even better. goodie has done well because of the quality of the players and team he has. petty has been played in the ruck multiple times and to me has failed everytime. may as well throw woey in the middle at least he could immediately tackle the opposition ruckman when they take the ball straight out of the ruck instead of going for the hitout. The disrespect you show our premiership coach is unbelievable. Did you actually notice last night how “tall forward lines” weren’t effective. No-one picked us ..the odds were against us and yet we won . Maybe just enjoy the win & leave the sniping out of it … 3 Quote

"Only"? I prefer "first". 😉 The wider genius question comes down to what we learn from this game. Sacrificing numbers forward in order to scrap and congest close to the ball worked brilliantly in the wet against uncontessendon. Now that we know we can do it, it might neutralise our previously significant weaknesses in the wet. It may also prove to be the moment we come to terms with not having an elite inside mid group this season. Our losses this season have all featured a long tail of players making very limited contributions, but as Windsor, Tholstrupp, AMW and others are getting more involved, confident and effective we may yet overcome that as well. 1 Quote
