I have listened to Simon Goodwin's media conference in full. He did mention Will Verrall is in the mix for selection to replace Max Gawn on Saturday night.

Ess have been playing 4 talls fwds and 2 tall wings. Wouldn't surprise if we bring in Tommo or send Disco back which allows Petty to play fwd. Would mean one of Bowey or AMW misses

2m Peter - 2.03

Langford - 1.92

Stringer - 1.92

caddy - 1.93

Jones - 1.93

Cox - 2.00

It’s a good point.

I would say that May will play on whoever is deepest, which is likely 2m Peter. Lever to take Caddy, Tmac Langford and Tommo could take Stringer.

On another note Would love to see Viney do a hare tagging job on Merrett. Really physical

I agree this is a game where we need to go a little bigger than normal because Essendon are so tall with Cox and sometimes even Jones on a wing.

The loss of Gawn means that Fullarton will need some chop outs.

Hence one of Petty (if fit) or Tomlinson should be brought back in.

Woey goes back to VFL, leaving the choice of sub IMV between Bowey or Melksham (if Petty plays), although Goody will pick the youngster Moniz-Wakefield.

As to tag on Merrett, we need a hard tag and ANB is perfect. Viney would be good too, but we need him going for the ball - we will only win this game if Viney, Rivers and Oliver can win enough clearances.

Maybe they will be too tall for the conditions?  We can beat them if they carry too much height into the game and it ends up being a slippery groundball fest

Deciphering "Goody speak".......I would not be confident if I was Tom Fullerton.

We should play Verrel as Max’s replacement.

l believe we recruited him to be a ruckman , so surely his time has come.

He’s got to play his first game sometime - give the kid a go.

I don't read anything into the press conference re Max's replacement.  We don't want to telegraph the changes before we have to.

Smarty sits behind his computer screen and tries to be funny and takes potties at players, even young ones yet to debut.

Gots me zero time for Smarties, FD.

more across the middle we've got some extra pace to spread and hurt on the counter attack/slingshot than we did earlier in the year

Agreed. Plus, the run of youth, all game. Fiddling will be necessary due to the loss of Big Max, but I'd reckon we can knock Essendrug into a 2025 rebuild.

He said Fullarton was too, just to clear things up for all posters since your comment.

I want to see us belt the hell out of them at the contest

I'd absolutely play Melksham in the starting 22. He is the most effective 'tall' forward we have with his leading and aerial contest work and his kicking in our forward half is sublime. He is also pretty hand at shutting down a rebound defender.

I reckon we will bring in Fullarton to shoulder the majority of ruck work. We probably don't want Roo spending too much time in there considering how well he is playing forward. Gawn was pretty bullish about how hard he has worked since coming into the club with winning alot of internal awards but his hamstring injury had set him back a bit.

You’d assume as much, given he’s one of two of our only ruck options.

Before his knee injury Ben Brown played in the ruck in the VFL and had his best game of the season. Looked the most effective of our rucks Verral, Fullerton and co.

For those suggesting Fullerton plays im genuinely interested have you watched the VFL? While he moves well, gets to contests around the ground and has some nice athletic attributes, he is easily out muscled in the ruck and rarely wins hit outs. He could play but it would be a very different style of play for us.
Whereas Verral looks more like a real ruckman and can be very good up forward also watching every VFL game I think his best far exceeds Fullerton but he is also young so can go missing and can still be bullied by the larger bodied ruckmen at VFL level.
I’m not sure what we go with but I don’t think Verral would be anymore a surprise than Fullerton and my Smokey is BBB to ruck a full game if his injury is fully healed.

Neither will have the body strength for Draper or Darcy so this is about who might offer more of a differing advantage in other ways. Both move well, Verrall does not have a tank to get around a VFL ground at VFL pace yet clearly Fullarton for me. I suggest he is also a better mark to help just behind the ball. For those calling out Verrall forward he has not kicked a goal in his last 12 games (Fullarton 9 from his 10 games this year). I also doubt either of them if played will get much rest forward nor be pushing forward in play. It’s clearly Fullarton for mine to get the first go at it.

It is most likely to be rainy. Tall timbers' effectiveness will be down, considerably. One in from us is enough most likely, the game will be determined by the runners - who can run all day - suggesting mobile smalls to do the fleet-footed stuff and swarm at the ball for opportunities. Just a thought, 'tapping' wins will be less than effective, anyway.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
