Thank god he didn't get the opportunity to do so.

Will we have a crack at him?

I have no idea but no doubt the recruiter liked him in his draft year. I’m sure he comes good but we can’t be nursing him to that point just as north can’t. You just know he becomes a star at Geelong, Brisbane or Sydney - sadly.

JT def continues to keep eyes on players he rated at draft. Let’s hope not. He looks like a massive bust.

The interview with Gawn after the game suggests that next year he will need help and some rest through out the season. We can not go a whole season with just Gawn next year.

Max Heath to me is the perfect fit. Can go forward and can ruck.

Campbell is a very solid ruckman, so the help is/was there?

I said for next year.

Campbell may go on for one year or retire this year but I’d rather find our next ruckman.

Never thought I'd say it:

  • Try to get a 2nd for May. Disco is the future

  • Any first we can get for Trac. Clarry more likely to return to the player he was than Trac

  • Don't mind either way with Lever. Petty or JvR is fine

  • Sparrow to Port for chips

You’ll be lucky to get a 3rd rounder for May

Yes, we cant go with JVR again

Any insights into ex-bushy player Phoenix Gothard @dazzledavey36 ? I saw he kicked 4 in the VFL finals loss today. Understand he's had some injuries thus far but seems to hit the scoreboard regularly as a small forward for the Giants.

With Pickett spending more time in the midfield we could certainly use another quality small.

A quick glance at premiership teams will show that they have targeted and acquired contracted (or expensive) players to compliment the talent we did it with May, Lever and Langdon. Theres Daniher, Howes, Cameron, Lynch, Dangerfield, etc

We've been to the draft, it's time to look at players we want regardless of contract status. Unfortunately we can't afford the very top I.e butters (unless creative I.e Petty, 1st round (Trac/Oliver) and future 1st round. It's also easier tho target players from interstate clubs so:

I'd target Touk Miller who is being pushed out of the Suns midfield and will face even greater challenges as the suns academy keeps supplying top end talent. Due to the academy they're is going to be opportunity to grab a starting 22 player there.

Similarly with the Lions, and I mean starting 22 not fringe like Sharp.

But ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, leftfield

I'd chase read from the eagles offering them JVR (to replace Allan) and Petracca ((he wants a big club 😅) maybe a swap of picks to even out. Trac would be captain and provide leadership to their emerging midfield.

Thoughts on Nathan O’driscoll from Fremantle? Not in the side today, always seems to catch the eye when watching Freo games.

Are you serious?

Clark is a star at Dockers couldn’t get a regular game at Cats.

Baker hardly played for us.

Martin is playing far better than at Blues.

Clark was in his first 3 years at Geelong in a team that gives players time. He hasn't all of a sudden improved at Freo out of getting experience, stronger fitter.

Baker hardly has played for the dogs and when he has his output was no different to when at Melb, although he did play well yesterday.

and Martin is still doing the same Martin thing hes done for the last 10 years. Flashes of brilliance with not much in between.

Norf gave up pick 25 for Calab Daniel. Absolutely diabolical. Total coach killer. May on one leg and half rat power is better than any of the three experience blokes Norf bought in in 2024.

Ryan Burton anyone?

Just been delisted by PA, or are his injuries more serious than I’m aware of?

we need to stop recruiting in the 15-30 bracket f=of our list, you arent playing him ahead of bowey, mcvee, salem or rivers so whats the point? take a kid with upside not another 27yo average afl goer

It gets worse though, they then traded their first round pick in 2026 for pick 27 in 2025 draft.

so in a roundabout way (and with hindsight) basically traded pick 2 for him.

A theory; if a delisted player is not good enough for there club, then why would they be good enough for ours!!!

No thanks, constantly injured and peaked early.

What a flop that Wingard/Burton trade ended up being for both clubs.

I think part of the point was we had Campbell there and probably should have used him to give Max a spell at some point but didn't (just for a change).

I know Max is a warrior and of immense spiritual and on feild value to the team, thus in the season we had, it was probably pretty important he played alot of weeks to help hold the ship together, but you do have to wounder if he's his own worst enemy in preserving himself in the interests of maximising his career (pardon the bad pun).

I'd rather keep Max on ice every now and then and make sure he's there for the biggest of games when we hopefully become competitive again.

Also Tom is the same age as Max, so you'd think it would be reasonable for him to go around again if we can't find a younger backup, unless he's no longer willing or his fitness and form doesn't support that.

Reckon he's a decent cheap option to build depth in our midfield. If one of Trac or Clarrys go, is be seeking him out of he was cheap. Trade demand would be low as they're not even playing him and hasn't nailed down a spot in their team for years. Equivalent to Laurie for us, but far more proven and upside IMO.

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
