they've got the $$ to spend and the need for a small forward

Wouldn't be surprised to see Carlton have a crack at him, salary cap probably an issue though.

Sorry but I wouldn’t touch him. Don’t care how good he has been recently, someone who is openly selling his soul to the highest bidder (if I’m not mistaken) cannot be good for our club, particularly our “culture”. I mean, the cats made him, he played in a premiership, and yet he wants to leave? Doesn’t sound like a teammate I could rely on to me. Some parallels to us and LJ, but LJ was just a babe, Stengel is 3 years older and knows what he is doing. It’s a big pass for me.

Not sure if previously mentioned but Cadman had been dropped by GWS.

will cost a lot, from both a trade and contract perspective

i like the looks of max gruzewski, who has replaced cadman this week

they have so many tall forwards to pick from

wretched franchise

This bit most definitely...   but I don't think it has to be a house hold established big name.  Just someone who CAN

Will Phillips?

No, but seriously, actually slightly interested in others opinions here - is there anything to salvage?

I think he’s worth a look for a late pick trade. Seems his development and confidence was really stunted by the poor North management whrn he was first drafted. He’s also best mates with Bailey Laurie, whether that makes a difference who knows.

I think we could easily sell him the dream of midfield opportunities in the near future, but is he worth it & would North let him go for anything less than a 2nd-rounder? Surely they can’t take a hit that size this soon.

Players like Phillips go cheap when out of contract, even though originally a high pick. 3rd rounder probably, or late 2nd. I think it would be worth a go.

I missed the whole ‘North taking him with pick 3’ fiasco so I have no idea how good he was meant to be or where he otherwise would have been taken

But surely anyone taken at that pick must have something to work with? Especially if he’s in the right environment and has the right mentality

Players the style of Phillips are not what we need

I think we need a range of players. Inside mid depth is definitely something that could help. We are playing Nibbler and Kozzy through the middle and our forward pressure has dropped off a cliff. A key forward is also a must. Back up ruck or competent ruck forward. Plus more players with leg speed.

This off season will be key to whether we can get back to competing for a flag or not.

I reckon 1 in 3 people I talk to seem to think we need to throw the kitchen sink at a Mckay or Ben King type and nothing else. We don't.

We need someone physical who can compete physically and crash packs, get the ball to ground and bring smaller guys into play. If they can take a decent contested mark and kick reasonably straight that would help as well but with JVR coming through, Jefferson waiting on his chance and now Kentfield on the list we just need someone competent enough to head this group up while we also put resources into midfield depth and outside class.

Someone equal to a fit Tom McDonald early 2021 would be a dream.

Any interest ?

Good lord no..

Absolutely horrific by foot and constantly butchers it.

His career average disposal for a midfielder is 11 which is rated as below average.

No thanks.

I think this whole discussion ultimately depends on where the club thinks we are in our premiership pursuit, it's not clear to me if we're going to be able to just bounce back and win it all in 2025 without some pretty big changes.

I'm all for loading up and going again while we have Max and May, but we will need in my opinion 3-4 best 22 recruits and one of them needs to be a key forward, if that's not going to be possible then i think we just keep adding to our young core, try to get an extra first rounder in this draft as it's midfield heavy and re-build our midfield depth.

I think we'd be crazy not to try and lure McDonald and Stengle, we're going to have money to spend, picks to trade and we need a forward line that can score goals.

McDonald, Van Rooyen and maybe Petty  with Stengle, Kozzie and Fritsch looks dangerous on paper, if we can sprinkle in some forward craft that'd be wonderful

Loading up is the shorest way for us to end up cellar dwellars for years to come. I say keep drafting top end talent and go after a 25-26 year old key forward or outside mid. (very hard to land I realise) Personally I think we can have our cake and eat it as well. Sydney and Geelong have shown the best model. With Tassie coming in and next year looking even more even we have to be patient and clever. Let us supporters run around arms flailing while internally cooler heads prevail. Here's hoping.

as long as gawn, may. viney are there we are 100% in the premiership window and should be chasing adding the best talent that we can to the list to maximise our chances

that said...there ain't much available at the end of this year

I'd be building around Trac, Lever, Clarry - not May and Max. We need to get an experienced body to partner with JVR. Is that Taylor Walker? Probably not, so who?

And we need to rebuild our midfield. LDU, Callaghan, who else?

I also think Bowey and McVee should be part of the midfield rotation next year. Which means we need to see if someone like AMW can play half back to release one of them through there.

I'd be up for Moyle too, but I reckon until Max has retired, we won't be able to attract someone like this.

Elijah Tsatas keeps getting dropped by the Bombers. Wonder whether he gets frustrated and looks around soon.

If you ask Bomber fans, he would look around but then miss the target with his disposal.

He's kicking at afl level reminds me of my golfing ability. Generally goes in the right direction but spends more time on the ground than the air.

I am 100% in agreement with the first part.

We are not building anything around Max, May and probably Viney. They have been integral to our side and may still have a role in our future success however, they are not the nucleus of it.

Our midfield needs a proper rethink, in strategy and bodies.

I’d be building around Rivers, Pickett, McVee, Van Rooyan, potentially Petty if he wants to stay, Turner. We have some really good youth. I’d be looking to double down on that, as Max, May and Viney are only aging. I wouldn’t be hitching my wagon to aging warriors. They got their flag. We are no longer in the window and already have Petracca and Oliver signed to long term deals. Some rocket scientist also signed Brayshaw to a long term deal prior to that.

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 2 Jacob van Rooyen

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
