POSTGAME: Rd 03 vs Port Adelaide

Recommended Posts

Fantastic team performance against a genuinely good opposition at a hostile home ground!

In particular, I’m so happy for Benny Brown, Tom McDonald and Marty Hore.  Three guys who have been completely written off, playing pivotal roles in the team.  All three are thriving and supporting their younger teammates.

Didn’t see them being capable of this level of football!

See, this is the thing. We didn't steal it then. We set ourselves up that way. We were super aggressive from every centre bounce and many around the ground stoppages. The mentality clearly being win a pure clearance either out of the front or unpressured or be prepared to lose the clearance and then dig in at our defensive end.

That has been a noticeable difference in all 4 games we've played this year.

Is rpfc about to have a semantical argument?

We have the way we want to play and we executed it really well. There were two periods totalling 33 mins where we kicked 11 goals to 1 (over the qtr time and 3qtr time breaks). We were beaten in CP, UP, Clearances, and the useless stat of I50s. Which is indicative of the pressure that the backline was under for the other 90 mins…

I think we can say we ‘stole’ this one.

How good was Rick Levers demonstrative spray to the defenders after Rozee was gifted that goal to level the score with 10 mins to go.

Without knowing what was said he was demanding them to stand up and not lose this game from here.

I loved it

My father used to tell me you only have to be in front at the end rpfc. All other stats don’t matter.

Another win, another enjoying Sunday. A pies fan ( I never thought I could hate anything this much) said to me last night you fell in with that one. My answer yep like the ten games you fell in last year including the GF and we didn’t have to end a players career to do it.  [censored]! Enough. I am enjoying this win till at least Wednesday.

I don't know that we stole it. It was a tough game start to finish. They got off to a flier then we dominated from midway through the first to about midway through the 2nd. They wrested momentum back when Gawn and Oliver had a rest in the 2nd. We withheld some heavy attack from them in the 3rd then put the foot down at the start of the last. Esava going off for a period was key but Oliver started dominating around the contest in the last. They were missing Powell-Pepper and Horne-Francis but May was out for us. I think it was just a great 59/50 game and we came out on top as we had the grit for a bit longer. If it went another 5 minutes they may have got over us but thems the breaks.

Yes, and we did it in a way that is MFC in 2024. Absorb and let them flounder with no space in their F50, and then get a turnover and slingshot with kicking to forwards leading at the ball. (Ironically this is how teams beat us the last few years - when you are all about forward half turnover and can’t move the footy from the other arc - you have no space.)

Thats why we have 22+ scoring shots from 45 I50s.

This is actual footy, it’s been missing entirely the last couple of years. So glad it’s back.

We were fortunate to win IMO. Port were generally better across the match but we hung in which is no small thing.

The Fox Footy [censored] were chipping Max about Goody talking about Expected Score in last year's finals - would he mention it last night when we clearly lost it? But there’s a lot of truth in that.

I was as [censored] off as anyone to lose last year when we should have won, I'm going to eat my own dog food here when the boot's on the other foot.

Very happy to win though.

On expected scores we are probably the 2023 premiers. Except we are not.
Port let themselves down in front of goal and didn’t take advantage of their inside 50 dominance.
That’s football. We’ve lost plenty of games we should have won. As Goody said, we were better during crucial moments and took our chances.

A fantastic victory!

Gee Petty loves to be a pest. Would be annoying to play on. Was at Alir all night.

Yes noticed that.

Also noticed Rioli give him a clip in a drive by, when Petty was on the ground trying to get up.

Was down with Covid last night and asleep at 8, so just finished the replay. A couple of things I noticed…

Oliver is back.. was finding his feet the first few rounds, but last night he got stronger as the game went on. Was swooping on loose balls and moving through traffic like AA Clayton.

Howes is a very good footballer. Class and poise, rarely beaten.

Juddy is under the radar.. just does everything well

The Team look connected… tapping to advantage, blocking, selfless running. We had it in 2021, first time I’ve seen it since, and I’ve seen it 3 times already this year.

Now you might say the bounday ump's view may have been obscured at the critical moment, but I recall a field ump was just a few metres away on the boundary on the other side facing the ball.  I can understand umps making mistakes in difficult situations, but amazed they can't get the simple things right. For example, in the Casey match a player kicked a goal after the siren after going 2m off his line.

Therefore a ball that has entirely crossed the goal-line, has also gone past the back of the post.  To hit the post after that point, the ball needs to be blown back by a gale or it needs to be spinning such that a part of the ball goes back to hit the post e.g. a helicopter kick or "one around the corner".

Reminds me of Ricky Jackson’s goal in the 88 prelim.

Sometimes you just have to find a way to win, and the Demons did it!

ANB top game, Langdon back in form, and BBB making a big contribution.

It’s terrific to see BBB and TMac back in form, I thought their injuries had finished them last year, a great bonus for the team to have them in good health!

Biggest positive for me was Lever. Thought he had been poor this year, but he stood up in the absence of May with was pleasant surprise. Best game I've seen him play in a long time.

Other positive was that the game wasn't won by our top 10. Rivers, ANB, Brown, Chandler got it done for us.

Tackle pressure needs to lift though. We lost tackle count despite having less of the ball, and got smashed in the I50 tackle count. No tackles for Pickett.

Great win last night. Very proud of the team and rapt for Vines.

It you want a surreal experience, watch the first 5 minutes of The Round So Far.  Kane Cornes is full of praise for Melbourne, rightfully recognises how good ANB was last night (and has been all season), and also rightfully calls out the Rozee flop that reversed that free kick and gifted them a goal.

I'm not a BBB or Tmac hater in anyway, they are premiership players and will be forever grateful, but did think their best footy was behind them, yes.

Did i think they should have pulled the pin at the end of last year, yes.

I was wrong about them both they have completely prove me and the rest of us wrong.

I apologise BBB and Tmac, i hope the rest of us have the stones to apologise also.

I hope they can keep this going until the business end of the season.

Looking at them on TV last night, I’m frankly shocked they can use a phone. Some absolute inbred [censored] in that crowd.

The ‘steal’ debate is an interesting one. I get the statistical argument but on the eye test it just felt like a classic game of momentum swings. We arrested theirs when we needed to and took full advantage of ours when we had them.

Not to mention coming home with a wet sail which should be praised in any sport.

As Max himself noted we are often on the other end of those types of battles so a refreshing change and a damn good win.

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form

GAMEDAY: Rd 10 vs West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium. A win and a percentage boost will keep the Dees in top four contention whilst a loss will cast doubt on the Dees flag credentials and bring them back to the pack fighting for a spot in the 8 as we fast approach the halfway point of the season.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had
