Only Max or Tmac should entertain the idea of knocking him out since they qualify for the good guy defence.

that puts things into some perspective. I wonder , aside from feeding the collingwood hype train with the inflow of dollars that comes with that etc, why would the AFL feel so adamant that he not get suspended?ย

Yet i am sure the AFL get very angry when some people suggest that they may be a corrupt boysโ€™ club.ย

2023 is the first time in my memory (a baby boomer who remembers the glory days) that I have not watched (since the time all have been televised) or attended any PF or GF. ย ย
I usually attend a few neutral games at the G, but havenโ€™t even watched one on TV.

Occasionally look at parts of replays especially when Geelong, or either CFC get done in a close or controversial finish.ย

They, through their smug promotion and protection of their favourites, have lost me.ย

ย I fully agree that this is true. Moreover, I believe from the moment he decided to flatten Gus the AFL knew heโ€™d get off.ย But they had to look as though they were doing something about the zeitgeist, the head is sacrosanct, remember? So they made a case against him, except it was a flimsy half-baked attempt which they knew was destined to fail. It was patently obvious they didnโ€™t want the outcome we all wanted, ie. the right and fair outcome. They made a mockery of the tribunal/appeals system in the process.ย

Iโ€™ve been accused of blind devotion to our Club but this is one instance where I believe the MFC failed. We took it lying down, so to speak. But thatโ€™s probably because any attempt to effect justice would have been futile and the Club knows this. Why waste time/money/resources on something thatโ€™s doomed before it even begins?

I donโ€™t see any Demon doing anything to Maynard.

We wonโ€™t want suspensions and nothing less than a suspensionย worthy act is worth doing anyway.

Pushing and shoving is meaningless and just wastes energy and is distracting from the game.

The best thing we can do is win by a landslide and then a marking attempt which accidentally knocks Maynard out is the best quinella.

Goodwin went hard straight after the game in the press conference

and then got slaughtered by the press for it. The media united around the collingwood/ Maynard causeโ€ฆ it still makes me sick.ย

Revenge is like throwing sand at your enemy upwind, it comes back to hurt you. Winning the game is all that counts.

So if true, the AFL decided before the Tribunal hearing that he would get off.

So much for integrity.

Again, if true, reaffirms why this is not a sport but a business.

ย

Anyone who believes in the integrity of the AFL may as well believe in the tooth fairy! Look at the way they manipulate outcomes and punish teams who don't toe the line. I'm not a fan of theirs but the way the AFL handed down a punitive trade ban on Sydney because they signed Buddy from under the nose of GWS was an absolute disgrace. Never mind the million other examples you could come up with of them manufacturing a desired outcome.

ย Not to mention that we were still in the premiership race and had a game to focus on. Our season wasnโ€™t done. We couldnโ€™t let this distract us, but ultimately it absolutely did.ย
I believe that other injuries aside, Gus getting knocked out is why we didnโ€™t win the 2023 flag.ย

More likely that the tooth fairy exists than the AFL having a scrap of integrity, these days...!

They didnโ€™t want him suspended because they didnโ€™t want anything to jeopardise Collingwoodโ€™s journey to a premiership. This meant, among other things, having every player available for the remainder of the finals.ย

And the umpires not paying frees against for HTB late in games, so they could run the clock down when leading.

25 minute interview with Brayden Maynard's mum on AFL website's vacuous "Mum's with mics" segment.

The shaping of the narrative has started early. Talking about the 'media coverage' and how upsetting it was.

I've watched it an extracted most of what was said about the incident, so nobody else needs to wade through the rest of the tedium.

ย

"It's pretty hurtful stuff. It's pretty hurtful stuff. Because [shrugs and smiles] it's a footy act. It's a footy act."

"No one - no one intentionally goes out to do anything like that... and if they did, they shouldn't be playing footy. But it is - it is a contact sport. Like, it is, it is, and, sadly stuff does happen."

"I think the fact that a career ended... to be pinpointed on my son, that just breaks my heart because that just - that just is not the case. It's not. No."

ย

No, they did not mentioned Angus Brayshaw by name at any point, nor express any condolences or sympathy for him or, for that matter, his mum. For example as you can see in the quotes here, it was 'a career ended'.

Time for your periodic reminded that Brayden Maynard has hospitalised an opponent with a head injury every season since Craig McRae became Collingwood coach.

My anger towards Maynard is enormous and the only time I have really wanted to see a player get hurt.

However this anger pales into insignificance against the anger felt towards the AFL, McGuire and the toady media for their sycophantic coverage and predetermined, manufactured outcome.

I truly hope the Frawley family and others pursue law suits against the AFL and the Gus incident is highlighted as an example of dereliction of a duty of care with individuals named.

Pies media management really is second to none ๐Ÿคฎย

No one should be expecting on field violence, itโ€™s not going to happen and if it did what good would it really do? One of our players getting 6 weeks for knocking out a bog-standard back pocket player? Pointless.

Nothing we can do except beat them on the scoreboard and win another flag.ย

Edited by Fromgotowoewodin

If i was to offer advice to Goody and the MFC about how to approach this it would be simple, - the best way to honor Gus even against a fake tough guy like this is to beat the Pies on the kings birthday stage with class and integrity, don't get distracted by Maynard or anything they say to May, just beat them, bank the win and move on towards another premiership tilt.ย

there is nothing we can say or do that's going to undo what happened to Gus, or really matter to Maynard/Collingwood

given their injuries, the only real chance they have of beating us is if we get distracted and worry about things other than the game.ย

  • REPORT: Port Adelaide

Of course, itโ€™s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. Itโ€™s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologistย  Itโ€™s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now letโ€™s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmedย the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).ย

  • CASEY: Essendon

Caseyโ€™s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckmanโ€™s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demonsโ€™ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
