Was trying to have a break from Demonland until the 2024 AFL season started.

This has absolutely gutted me! Very sad news, I wish Angus Brayshaw all the best. He will always be remembered as a Demons Premiership hero who helped end our 57 year Premiership drought.

I will squarely lay the blame of this tragic set of circumstances with that piece of excrement and all-round knuckle dragging troglodyte Brayden "the thug" Maynard! Never forget that he is responsible for all this and Angus Brayshaw being forced to retire! Be sure to BOO him incessantly when we play the scum at Collingwood! 😡😡😡😡

I hope that Angus Brayshaw considers suing the AFL, Collingwood and Brayden Maynard for their lack of duty of care!

Maynard could have been asked one simple question. The fact that he wasn't still doesn't exonerate him nor convict him.

But he will still have to carry it with him..

Make no mistake, that thug decided to take a cheap shot at one of our players. Did he intended to end his career? Murder him? Probably not, but he clearly wanted to look "tough".

We have made great strides in this space, but there is more that needs to be done to safeguard the brains of players not only in the AFL ranks, but from grassroots all the way up. I believe the future of our game will be strongly impacted by how we deal with this element of player safety as more information comes to light. I hope the AFL will be proactive in the future when it comes to the safety of its players as opposed to reactive, so we can continue to enjoy this amazing game and protect the brains of the players. They must be sacrosanct.'

Binners, what do you think the chances are of helmets becoming mandatory?

Nah, they'd be too worried about Maynard getting injured by them.

Stayed off this thread all day enjoying a wonderful day.

I'm going to go back and watch the third QTR of our premiership game.

I firmly believe it was not the "bang bang bang" but Gus Bradshaw's heroics and selfless play leading up to that, that turned the game our way.

He was just immense. He never gives in and I will miss watching him do the hard things that others don't when games are on the line.

Thank you Angus Brayshaw

G A G F AFL for letting it slide and letting Maynard get away with it.

Hard to watch that interview, you can see the raw devestation. In the end it was the only right move for his health going forward. Wish him nothing but the best and thank him for the memories of '21 and an outstanding career in general.

I’ve an Anzac and away jersey I need to add numbers to. Both are 2022 vintage with the gold Premiers logo

I’d planned on having #5 on the Anzac one but I think it only fitting #10 goes on

When wife (pies) asks why, I’ll explain it’s a reminder of Gus, what was taken from him by that animal, and how he went out - with grace, humility and a bona fide legend.

Quick quiz: If Someone created a fairly pointed Brayden Maynard is a <insert a popularly voted invective here > on a tshirt and made him look a bit like a money with some teeth missing, who would want to buy one

srs question

Haven’t been on for ages because I couldn’t deal with the off field drama but I came in response to this news. I’m heartbroken for Gus but absolutely love this photo and it sums up my memory of him for me. Premiership hero and all time great in my mind and my heart. Love you Gus.

Great to hear from you again Nasher, albeit shocking circumstances! Stay well, regards Fence!

I truly hope Maynard wears this as a millstone around his neck for the remainder of his life

He won't, he'll wear the 2023 premiership medal around his neck for the remainder of his life though.

Thought a lot about what to post about this today. I could vent my lingering anger about Collingwood and Maynard..but it’s all very futile.

This bloke will forever be remembered for his Grand Final heroics, his podcasts, his helmet, his guts, his sportsmanship, his head tilt, that [censored] goal! We love him dearly and this is an untimely end, but one we always knew we might have to deal with. You know what though, he climbed the highest mountain. He took us to the promise land. No thug act disguised as an accident, nor a corrupt league can take that away.

I sincerely hope he stays involved at the club and would love to see him as a runner this year, and he should wear the bloody helmet!!

There is no karma in footy.

Angus Brayshaw's career wasn't ended by a dodgy attempt to smother. He was the victim of an assault that in other circumstances could have seen the perpetrator facing criminal charges. Only the AFL and one-eyed Collingwood supporters could disagree.

His moving farewell letter and obvious love for the club speak volumes for the character of a man who will be remembered with admiration and affection from every Demons fan. His willingness to play out of his preferred position in the interests of the team says it all about a player whose retirement will leave an enormous gap in our lineup.

Zero short term (say next 10 -15 years).

In large part because there's little evidence they work (they don't stop the brain whiplashing around inside the skull, which as I understand it is where the real damage is done).

But at some point for sure.

I have heard there are some helmets designs pretty well advanced that look promising.

They have some sort of compression material that absorbs some of the impact and reduces the whiplash effect.

And apparently there are smart mouth guards already available that measure impact to track the frequency and severity of head knocks.

But what I can see soon is the bump being banned.

And even leaving the ground to smother such is the risk (as we have just seen)

Goody has said the bump being banned is inevitable and that they train the players not to bump.

This is where the AFL is allowing itself to be exposed legally - and morally.

They should ban the bump NOW.

Or at least phase it in by immediately banning the shepperd/bump where players run past the player with the ball and hit a trailing player.

Proactive

The hit de Goey put on that freo rookie last year is what I'm thinking of there. He flushed his jaw with his shoulder. Broke his jaw and knocked him into next week.

From memory only got two weeks. Football act. If he had not got him in the head he wouldn't have been reported.

But it was a totally unnecessary act. Whichbbroke the jaw of a 20 year old kid in his first or second game. Shepperd with your arms out if you want to shepherd.

But they won't because they are gutless and don't want all the talk back, its not netball whoo ha and bone head ex footballers on their back about changing the game (massive credit to David King on this front - one of the few ex footballers serious about this issue. He has too many friends with cte).

And inevitably someone will get hip and shouldered and have to immediately retire because of the severity of the hit. Get brain damage, just like gus did.

And then they will have to scramble to ban the bump. Too late for a young bloke who's footy career is over in the blink of an eye.

Reactive.

The other factor is a serious legal tsunami is heading the AFL's way. Its surely going to force the AFL to make significant changes to the game.

The NFL has already faced it/is facing it.

The big, big difference is the NFL is a trillion dollar industry.

The AFL is small change in comparison.

Of course the NFL want to reduce risk (eg helmet technology, in game testing, some rule changes etc) but its hard to see them radically reducing the number of helmet to helmet clashes that characterise the game

But the NFL can absorb the payouts, insurance and super schemes and factor it into their business model.

The AFL can't.

Was going to write something similar.

Gutted by the circumstances and ia a massive loss on and off field.

That 3rd quarter just hitting so differently tonight.

A lot of emotions across the spectrum tonight, but the main one (outside of sheer sadness) is the hope that Gussy will remain in excellent health for a long time from here.

I don't blame Maynard.
Brayshaw is a victim of his own courage.
I remember when Hogan and Brayshaw hit the scene together.
All the hype was for Hogan but I was more excited about Brayshaw.
He was a fearless bull with a splash of class in the middle and would often stick his head where it probably shouldn't go.
I also remember he injured his neck (I believe) early on cause he tackled a guy head on head first.

Not one article on afl.com.AU dedicated to Angus. Just a mention in their lame news video. Tells the tale sadly.

Struggled to work after hearing this news.

Gutted that his career is over thanks to an act of thuggery that the AFL and majority of the media said was just an unfortunate act of footy.

Gus, thanks for being such a huge part of the flag that gave us so much joy. Your game was immense.

Your career was superb and you are a quality young man who has ultimately mate the right call for your family.

Go well Gus

Absolutely shameful that he's been relegated to 'Footy Feed: Dees shock call, Thomas sacked, new Swan impresses.'

But I'm not too worried because his legacy will only grow because the love for him is deep.

Angus is a quality human and the fact he did not excuse Maynard or mention him in his letter speaks volumes for me

Im still so angry

I hope we [censored] then up this year. don’t care where we finish

I read Gus's letter and was moved by his eloquent expression of how grateful he is. It moved me. I wish he could keep playing but he has accepted the news that it is too risky to keep playing. He is a heart and soul player of the Melbourne Football Club. A generational talent - not just with his footy skills but his love for the club, and his intellect for the game and life in general. It just hurts to know he won't play again. I feel for you Gus, I wish you all the best for the future mate. Thanks for the best memories. Your diving mark and goal in the 21 GF in Perth to put us back in front is something that I will NEVER forget. Good on you legend.

Helmets don't do anything. It's the brain hitting the inside of the skull from the whiplash that causes the damage.

  • FEATURE: 1925

A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.

  • PREVIEW: West Coast

Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

  • NON-MFC: Round 08

Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

The Demons hit the road in Round 8, heading to Perth to face the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium. With momentum building, the Dees will be aiming for a third straight victory to keep their season revival on course. Who comes in and who goes out?

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
