Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Substitute Rule to Remain Unchanged in 2024

The lack of responses here would indicate a 'who cares' factor.

In the big picture, I get that. But for what it's worth,  I would think a no sub, 5 person interchange is both simpler and inevitable, so why delay it?

The fact that Corn disagrees suggests that I am right. 😏

The sub rule sucks. just have an interchange bench.

Messes with players fitness and match ‘touch’. Guys like Toby Bedford end up not playing in the 2’s or firsts

What a sad sight it is…  the sub running laps in an empty stadium after a loss, especially when it’s raining. 😭

If the AFL changed the rule to a 5 person interchange bench, within one season an AFL coach will complain that it's unfair when a club has a player removed from the game because of concussion. That coach will call for a sixth player to be on the bench as a "medical substitute".

Nothing surer.

Not sure if this warrants a separate thread, but:

Maxy will like this

about time too.  With the bounces going all over the place half the time it is inevitable that there will be perceived blocking and ludicrous free kicks paid.

I am happy with the sub rule as is.

I love how fitness, both in game and as a factor throughout the season is managed as a strategic area.

I also enjoy seeing the games break open in the 2nd half as the fitter teams push harder.

5 man bench will lead to stingier defences and more boring game styles.

The game is more open than it was 5+ years ago and that might have something to do with the limit on rotations and/or the 6-6-6 rule

2013 - Unlimited rotations

2014 - 120 rotations

2016 - 90 rotations

2019 - Introduction of 6-6-6

2021 - 75 rotations

I reckon the sub will become the 5th interchange player sooner or later but they might limit the rotations to 60 eventually.  (or they won't)

The sub legitimately exists so that teams are not severely disadvantaged by an early in-game injury to a player, it makes sense, and as LDVC says - going to 5 on the IC will negate that purpose.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
