Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

Anyone know if Foxtel are showing the match simulations (Melbourne V Richmond on 18 Feb) even though they are exclusively KAYO telecasts?

Last year the answer was yes, but not in 2022.

I saw a Foxtel ad last night saying Preseason footy starts on 18th Feb so I assume they will.

I’m currently on $39 for Foxtel Plus and $25 for Sports HD. Big increase.

Will have to balance the cost of living, or the Kayo buffering + a very unhappy partner!!

Not disiminal 😬

Get ready for Hubbl in a couple of weeks (launch date 14 Feb)

Not sure it delivers any benefit but it's the new Foxtel service to deliver Kayo and Binge. In reality it's designed to get you to put all your other subscriptions through it (Netflix, Disney etc). Bundling or "stacking" as it's often called is the new approach to maximising their $$$ returns. Other than one bill a month for all your streaming services it's unclear that it delivers much more. Perhaps a discount but no signs of that.

The streaming industry is clearly in a state of flux with way too many players

After my experience last year DJ I doubt I will be back for more of the spinning arrow of death that accompanied any live game.

Did you watch though the Live Channels OD? I always do and rarely have any buffering issues.

Yes, on replays it was great even better picture quality. But live AFL it was poor. No problem I can live without it. I will miss F1.

Do you have NBN fibre to the premises OD. If you have fibre to the node NBN will now upgrade you for free with a relatively short waiting time (1-2 months).

This combined with making sure you have a good wifi distribution at home will see the ring disappear. The best system of wi fi extension these days is "Mesh".

Those F1 timeslots make following that sport challenging

DJ fibre to the house. Modem is in the room next door. Replays are great it is difficult to watch F1 without a streaming service these days.

do you have a wired (ethernet) or wireless connection to the room next door?

if wireless you could have a problem there despite the fast speed to the house

Do you chromecast to your tv or just use the Smart TV Kayo?

I was chromecasting from a Galaxy S22 all last year and whenever the game was live I would get lags at the worst times but never on replays. Recently I decided to test another streaming method: my laptop and connecting to the tv with an HDMI cable. Watched the whole College Football National Championship (4 hrs) without a single lag or spinning arrow.

It's a real pain but sometimes you just have to try another method, if one is available of course. These services struggle to get functionality right on all devices, should be a lot better.

Download a speed test app (they're free) to whatever you are using to watch (STB or TV) and check the speed. You're looking for a speed of 20 or greater.

I suspect as Daisycutter mentions you are having intermittent short drop outs on your wi fi and thus the buffering. You won't get the buffering on replays or streaming movies etc as they are loading your cache with the show often five minutes in advance. Live sport is about 20 seconds of cache at most so you will notice any drop out.

The good thing is that this is relatively easily fixed with a new router and a mesh satellite near your TV

https://www.jbhifi.com.au/collections/computers-tablets/mesh-routers

I have one of the more expensive Orbi systems which is great but I see JB Hi Fi has a good deal on an Eero system for $480. This includes the router and two satellites.

(Without boring you Mesh involves the router and the satellites continually "talking" to each other whereas extenders are simply the router to the extender. Think spider webs which are much stronger than a single strand)

PS: Layzie makes some good points. I use an Apple TV box and they are great

PayTV in Australia is an unmitigated disaster. Foxtel would be lucky to be worth AUD2B. Between Murdoch and Telstra, at least AUD100B has been flushed down the toilet over 27 odd years. Technically, it's a catastrophic. Former republics of the USSR have significantly superior technology and services than good ol' Australia. What an embarrassment that the AFL sell their soul to this pimple on the backside of the entertainment industry.

assuming od is using wifi from tv to router .....

an alternative would be to use a "powerline" connection. this is ethernet over your houses power points it works well where you can't run an ethernet cable to the router direct. you can get good high speeds now over powerline e.g. 2000 mbs.

if you want to try it you just need 2 powerline units. one plugged near router and one plugged near tv. they are a complete unit the size of your fist which just sit in a power point. then run short ethernet cable to router on one and a short ethernet cable on other to the tv. also the one plugged to the router can support multiple remote powerlines,

best bet would be to buy a second hand pair on marketplace. there are heaps advertised. look for something in range 1000 mps to 2000 mps. i bought a pair recently for about $50. you can also get a satellite one which in addition to having ethernet port(s) has a wifi gateway which might be useful for phone, ipad etc users if the normal wifi is weak at that place in the house.

if od is interested i can help him source a pair

pertinent to some of the discussion herein: https://theathletic.com/5255840/2024/02/06/espn-fox-warner-sports-streaming-service/

what will it mean for us in far flung oztraya? probably nothing with the various streamers tied to networks and our anti-siphoning...

...yet...

Sounds like they're either bundling or wholesaling. It's the next round (Telstra's new product Hubbl is essentially a bundler).

The real game changer if it ever comes will be worldwide rights. Region locking is fragmenting the world of streaming as is the number of would be players

Effectively exists for American sports already - you can get nba, nfl, and mlb as standalone

Sounds like they are trying to launch something to compete with AppleTV/Google TV. I'm assuming it won't effect the existing Kayo/Binge apps.

it's a replacement of telstra tv, i assume - it'll be the same as the sky stream box, a puck device, that aggregates most (but probably not all) the streaming service options

i use a telstra tv and it has foxtel, kayo, netflix, binge, paramount, apple, nba, nfl, etc. etc. as standalone apps that you download and use accordingly

notifications have gone out advising of the price rise and 4k switch - according to a friend of mine at the coalface, afl will be in true 4k as nep improved all cameras (e.g both those used by 7 and fox) last season

however, the espn channels aren't being broadcast on 4k - just fs1-4 (cricket, nrl, whatever is shunted to 3, afl) and presumably any + channels that they run for overlap content

really annoying that the nba in particular is higher quality on illegal streams (e.g. true 4k) than thru the kayo on 4k enabled tvs and add ons that use 4k like apple tv, telstra tv etc

and, as per previous, it's not available on 4k in mobile apps and browsers

an inferior product just keeps going up in price...

Yes.. others have reported that the price of digital memberships to AFL and NRL clubs went up by around $20-30 for the season.

Looking forward to seeing the new product.

Unfortunately the replays may be in the old format with reduced FPS. Hopefully not

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
