For a club that is an absolute rabble on field, they've got this media stuff down pat compared to a team that's finished top 4 three years in a row and with 70k fan base..

Thought I'd do a random stop by and see if other clubs were doing similar to North. First one I checked out was Freo and this is what they had up on their website. Well worth a look @12345_54321

Happy to have other clubs on for something to watch, but i hate dees games on Thursday night - particularly ones in Melbourne (because I'll almost always go). 

Friday night games are so much better.

Still stand alone, the week is done so after a win you can waych the replay.

And you get the benefit of the footy shows on radio on sat morning all discussing the game.

Has anyone emailed the club about our lack of training reports?

 

Incoming rant ..
Our media department has been treating the supporters with contempt for many years. They are hands down the worst and most lazy in the AFL. We get some happy snaps and 1 minute videos with terrible music. It's insulting imo. We have 74k followers on Twitter and 152k followers on Instagram, yet the club does nothing to leverage that support. It's maddening too me. Show us what is happening during preseason, take us inside, tell us positional changes, who is training well, the injury list, interview some players....we have 45 of them.
Do what all other AFL clubs comms are doing.
Goody said on SEN that they are going to open the doors so we can show our "culture".
So far that has proven to be a lie.

IMO, I'm pretty happy with level of media content. I think they did a great comprehensive job post GF. Yes, it's 2024 now, but I'm bit old school and don't use social media so happy with just photos and videos they release on their website and what afl.com.au website spits out, usually posted on both sites anyway. I particularly like the videos of players not just footy focused and any charitable activities they do, that's always refreshing.

Yep, agreed. AFL becoming like USA sports, played almost every day!

Believe AFL been very open about it before that Thursday night football is a hit and here to stay.

I accept that Thursday night football is here to stay, even though I don't like it. I know the AFL claims that it's "a hit", but I wonder about what its definition of "a hit" actually is? The analogy is T20 cricket. Cricket Australia claims that T20 is a hit but is also concerned about the future of test cricket. Has the "hit" which is T20 cricket irretrievably damaged test cricket? Similarly could too many days per week of AFL ultimately damage the long-term health of AFL football?

I'm going back a long time now, but in the 1980s, the then VFL commissioned David Crawford (a well-known consultant) to review all aspects of the competition. This was when most teams were technically insolvent. Out of that review came the professional competition we know today including the independent commission and national expansion, amongst other things. Crawford was adamant in that report that the VFL had to resist US-style professional sport with its private ownership and high-priced tickets. He wanted the VFL to remain the popular and supported at the grass roots level rather than being a product only available to those who could afford high prices. I fear that the administration of the AFL over the last 10 years has lost that understanding and now wants to mimic everything that happens in US sport which will eventually be the code's undoing.

I don't see that as a valid analogy.

It's not as if the AFL is running an abbreviated form of the game (like T20) that is competing for attention. 

They tried AFLX but it was a dismal failure and deservedly so.

Thursday night footy is not a threat to AFL.

Personally, I love it.  Too much footy is never enough!

The reason I see T20 cricket as an analogy is because its growth (in my opinion) has damaged cricket's value. Not because of the format nor because it's meaningless but because it's on TV on so many days. Thursday night AFL means more football on primetime FTA TV which goes against the economic theory of value found in scarcity.

Thursday evening footy has effectively replaced the Saturday afternoon fixture (albeit on delay) which was covered by Ch7 for years 

So we're getting about the same amount of FTA footy

Imagine the defenders these young forwards played on..... would be pretty hard to get an accurate feel for how they will go against a proper AFL side.

t20 has grown cricket's $$ value exponentially

the biggest stars in the game are still the three format players who excel at test level, not the franchise mercenaries

I like thursday night footy... when it's not us. 

 

Living 2 hours away makes it very hard to get to, drive home and then rock up to work at 8am friday.

To be honest as a retired member I don’t mind Thursday night football I travel with two of my daughters one of who is a school teacher and the other has two primary school kids and it can be a pain but if it’s a home game we all make it work!!

I think Howes is mainly in the mix for 3rd defender with Tomlinson and Turner. I think he has a lot of scope and athleticism to be given that role but I would think it depends on the attack.

Two big strong forwards I would think the 3rd defender behind May and Lever would be Tomlinson. For example I think we would have to play Tomo against Carlton where he is suited to holding McKay.

Howes is still light, so he can't be expected to win one on ones against seasoned forwards, but he has so much upside in class to both Turner and Tomlinson that he should be blooded this year with at least 10 games, and as long as the coaching staff take care of him he can offer our defence a really promising option.
