Funny trade looking back at it.

We sent out Pick 10, 2018 First Round and 2018 Fourth Round and in return we got Jake Lever, Pick 35 and 2018 Third Round Pick.

With Pick 35 we chose Harrison Petty.

IIRC Adelaide used those picks for Bryce Gibbs  which didn't exactly work wonders for them, whereas Petty/Lever helped us win a flag and now they're going to need to offer us some decent picks if they want to get Petty.

Trading for Bryce Gibbs was always a big gamble 😉

they really didn't

You can't look at what lever has done for us since the trade. You have to look at it at the time the trade was made.

They absolutely made us pay up which is all I'm saying we should do should petty want to leave

No Melbourne nice guy like grundy

two first round picks is what a 21 year old tall defender who has made an all oztrayan squad should be worth and that we got some 'change' out of it - and with jt picking the eyes out of the draft in selecting petty - was a bonus

similarly, by this logic, we made flagmantle 'pay up' for dog jackson; never had a team given as much for a player as they did to get him in

getting rid of grundy - who didn't want to be there and was contracted to us for ~650k for the next handful of years - for a pick 46 last year and sydney's future second-round pick (which is actually more than it cost us to get him in i think? pick 27 or so?) was good business

Adelaide screwed us to the wall for Lever

IF he goes it would be nice to return the favour.

Wasn't it two pick in the teens for Lever? That's a steal

If Adelaide gave us their '24 and '25 first for Petty we'd be well on top. They are bottom 6 rubbish

But I'd much rather he stayed and signed on again. His value to us as a team is huge

Petty is just now coming into his prime as a footballer so the compensation will mean we have to recruit a replacement of the same quality and age.

We should make an offer he cannot refuse.

Would love to keep Petty I hope he stays, can't wait for Jeffo to get up to speed after seeing him on the weekend.  Marking awesome...kicking not so much but just needs to practice.  Looked very competitive and hungry, not sure if that is out of the ordinary for him because I don't watch much VFL but Jeffo looked pretty good and exciting.

Interesting this makes me think @WheeloRatings who else seems to have an outside influence on when they are playing or not playing, in recent history, would do it myself but am clueless.

Recent social media posts indicate we are 7-0 when Woey Jr has been named. Given that goes back to his debut mid last year I'd imagine we're about even on win/loss when he hasn't been named.

Thought I heard from a reporter during the game likely to stay than go, but think he was offering his opinion more than reporting it as a source. Petty was niggling lots with Crows players, didn't look like he would want to play for them the way he going 😂

why pick out round 10 last year as the starting point?

and has anyone checked if this is correct. I thought he played in losses after Rd 10

Jefferson was just ok and nothing more - I made the effort to actually watch that game on replay as I’d read the comments in the match day thread about him performing well

His direct opponent was a very raw defender who frankly looks like he might struggle to make it

Jefferson’s kicking for goal was bordering on embarrassing and he constantly kept running too close to the man on the mark (such a basic and fundamental mistake). I saw little from him in terms of intensity and physicality to give me any more than a glimmer of hope. For me he still sits in the category of talented junior that performed well at times against kids but may never transition to an AFL player

We have seen this type of player before - Weed and Schache two recent examples on our list - hopefully I’m wrong but I do have serious doubts that he has what it takes

HE’S IN NO HARRY

Adelaide will launch a full-on assault to lure Harrison Petty back to South Australia once more, but don’t be surprised if he stays at Melbourne to chase a second premiership.

It has been reported in Adelaide that the Crows expect him to be in their colours next season after offering him a five-year $4 million deal that was heavily front-ended.

Petty was keen to go home when he saw that he could be part of the Shane McAdam trade.

Adelaide will hope Petty’s status as an unrestricted free agent in 2025 means the Demons might trade him as a pre-agent this year rather than accept a mid-teens free agency compensation pick next year.

So expect them to throw a considerable trade package at the Demons to turn their heads, with Demons great Garry Lyon suggesting on Friday only a Riley Thilthorpe swap would be acceptable.

But even six months on much has changed for Petty, who has made clear he is totally committed to the Demons and intent on focusing on their flag campaign.

When the Demons aborted that trade it was a very different climate at Melbourne as Clayton Oliver’s health battles continued.

The Demons got around Petty through captain Max Gawn and coach Simon Goodwin, who have both remained in constant touch with their swingman.

Expect Port Adelaide to have some interest in Petty’s future given Charlie Dixon is getting towards the end.

So while Petty is in no mood to consider a contract extension just yet, he is a long way from out the door at year’s end.

Of course he hasn't signed, why would he when clubs will up their offers by year end and Port can enter the market. We will have gus off the books and tmac or BBB off the books or on very small contacts in my view ... money won't be an issue ... we will offer a long term deal on a bit less and he will stay

Yeh I wonder if they mean when he plays forward?

He’s clearly played more than 7 games since R10 2023.

I hope I’m wrong too but the club has also shown faith in players before that just haven’t made it. Its not an easy competition to break into and be successful and the position he has been recruited for is not an easy one

Let’s all hope he continues to improve and evolves more in the JUH style than those the other guys I’ve mentioned. JUH can mark the ball and is learning to compete physically - his kicking is still a bit hit and miss but he clearly has a lot of upside. He is the type of player that I think the club believes Jefferson could be - fingers crossed 🤞

That is the worst kicking for goal I have seen from him, he is usually a pretty good kick for goal.

I think he will be in our team next year.

The above covers my thoughts Sydee. He would need to make big gains to be an AFL level talent.

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
