Jake has earnt this on top of his feats in 2023. Who knows but our list is evolving and recruits and youngsters should provide enough excitement to join with the list staples champs and role players to mss add Le a serious assault on the 2024 flag.

Gee I've always been a bit of a Melksham fan myself, but the turn around from teachers pet/ list clogger to MFC hero in about 3 games is remarkable.

Even Petty had banked a couple of seasons of defence credits  before he became a FF mega star after his 3 games at the pointy end

Given Melksham's in the twilight of his career, they may be inclined to rush him back a bit quicker than if a kid has done his ACL.

Hopefully he's fit and available by round 16-18 and he can replicate his 2023 season - i.e. - return for the round 16 Alice Game and then make an extremely large contribution from that point onwards.

We missed him dearly in the finals. Even in the round 24 Sydney game before he did his knee, he had 2 goals to his name and was causing havoc to Sydney's defence.

Melksham returning for R16 in Alice Springs? I cant think of a worse place to go for his first game back except the Cattery.

I hope we're not even going there next year. We travel far too much.

We will definitely be going to Alice next year, though it's unknown what round.

I used round 16 as an example of when he could potentially return in 2024.

I may have asked but don't recall an answer.  Did Jake have a 'conventional' ACL repair, or a LARS which was popular especially among senior players back in the 1990s - said to have a much quicker recovery though questions on long term (ie years) endurance?

Some as I recall were in full training within 6 months or so.

Also do we have any idea of the terms of Jake's new contract?  Certainly wouldn't expect it to be near the level he would have been offered without the injury.

Good news.

Now we have 34 senior listed players and on this year's base of 36 that gives us two senior list spots.

Yes, but it also allows flexibility if we want to utilise ND42 or we Brown gets nominated where we can’t rookie him.

F/S nominations close today and I'm not sure Brown has nominated mfc/mfc accepted...

A sensible approach.

Didn't we do this once before with another small forward who did a knee, David Williams, and bloody Tigger's drafted him!

He never played for them but also never come back to the Dee's either.

Does this mean pick 42 is back on the radar? or does it mean we will pick an extra rookie?

Make no mistake, Melksham is not here to just rehab. He wants a spot in a premiership side in 2024. He's hungry for success.

At this stage yes. But all depends whether they want to take the extra senior spot or just use it as a rookie.

I'm no expert on this so we have to bow to @Lucifers Hero and the list and contract status thread:

My reading is that potentially we could use pick 42 now (3 in total), but have one less Rookie pick ( now 1.)

The big advantage of rookie over primary list is that $80K of Melkshams salary is removed from the cap.  That can be used to front load someone elses salary for next year.  But using 42 means longer contract and salary obligations AFAIK.

If we were to use 42, there would have to be a good reason, since the individual will in all likelihood be available ( and cheaper) in the rookie draft.

don't suppose there is any chance using pick 11 + 42 (+ maybe a fp) to get an upgrade on 11?

Meanwhile, we have another ridiculous addition to the recent MFC pile on, this time for "exploiting" the rookie draft..  🙄

I dont even bother reading these [censored] now. Its the off season there's no news stories but this one...but soon it will be replaced but something/ someone else. The media spotlight gets brighter, more dangerous for the individuals involved  and more pathetic each year. I refuse to listen to Barrett and Cornes any more...I'll only put down that ban if we ever win another flag,

You can look at it 2 ways. First, the media hate us and are out to get us line. We know the journos bias for their own teams and their dislike of Melb. At the same time, the club and its players and officials have given them lots of material.  Our attitudes are influenced by our own bias. Second, an alternative view is that despite the “bad press”, we clearly are an important club. We do matter. Our history, recent successes, growing membership, and playing list full of A graders means we can’t be ignored. Don’t forget our glory years of the 50s and 60s brought unparalleled success and unparalleled hatred from other clubs and their supporters. For 100 years Collingwood has drawn great strength from being a hated club. So maybe we should embrace the hatred and like the Pies stand loud and proud.
And ignore the footy media scribes. Perhaps feel sorry for anyone who has to trawl the gutter to maintain their profile, keep a job, be universally disliked and perhaps feel occasional shame in belonging to the footy media. Doesn’t do much for their CV and future career prospects.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
