Maynard grilled by Chairman

Chairman Jeff Gleeson has popped in for a few questions.

He wants more clarity on why Maynard thinks he couldn't have outstretched his arms to lessen the impact, rather than turning his body.

"I think, with all due respect, the same outcome would have happened," Maynard said.

"I feel like when I went to smother, it was a flinch reaction, and like I said, he was in my way."

Gleeson asks again why Maynard couldn't have left his arms wide open.

"I feel the same outcome would have happened because it was a collision. It happened very quickly.

"I didn't see him coming down my line. I saw him to the right of me."

If Maynard opts to be putting his arms out, there is NOT the same outcome.  That’s wrong.

I've been following football for over 60 years, Tony.  I can't ever recall a "smother" where this has happened, can anyone else?  60 seasons, more than 10,000 matches, more than 1 million minutes of football.  It really is a freak accident or something else ...

What would Little Timmy have to say about it @old55?

It wasn't a great effort by the AFL but if you read Gleeson's instructions (before deliberating) carefully, he makes a few pointed references to duty of care and what footballers can expect in the years to come

As well as another reference to a player being concussed and stretched from the ground

And if they understand Gus' movements to kick the ball and Maynard's understanding of Gus' movements then that could go against the Filth, not for them

I'm still holding out hope

It was actually reading Gleeson’s instructions that obliterated any tiny modicum of hope I had left!

He was in my way?! WTF

You went to smother his kick of course he was in your way. What were you trying to smother? Fairy dust?!

And still he doesn’t say I had no time to stretch out my arms. Just I didn’t think it would change the outcome.
He should ask him if he’d do the same thing at training 🙄

so the tribunal thinks about maynard not playing a couple of important games. they do not worry about gus missing those same games and potentially a lot more as well as having a life long impact on his health and well being. They dont care that that dog act cost melbourne 1 of there best players minutes into the first quarter in a game that we just lost by 7 points. They got the collingwood win they wanted, and i guess that is all that matters. i personally think we need a sending off rule for that, if you take someone out like that you should not be able to continue to play especially when you are a man up.

The sending off rule is long overdue. If not, a sin bin. The risk of losing a player for the full game or 15 minutes, would stop a lot of these tactical hits. It is ridiculous that Melbourne could benefit from a Carlton player being rubbed out for something they did last week but the team that was impacted gets no benefit.

I'm reading between the lines and knowing Gleeson and how hard he can go, I doubt that there won't be some sort of penalty

Remembering that 65+ players were suspending for poorly executed tackles or bumps ... many of which were quite innocuous

Edit: Ah well, a sad day for football

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the

GAMEDAY: Rd 15 vs North Melbourne

It's Game Day and it very well could be the last roll of the dice for the Demon's finals aspirations in 2024. A loss to the bottom side would be another embarrassing moment in a cursed year for the Dees whilst a win could be the spark they need to reignite the fire in the belly.

    THE HUNTER by The Oracle

Something struck me as I sat on the couch watching the tragedy of North Melbourne’s attempt to beat Collingwood unfold on Sunday afternoon at the MCG.    It was three quarter time, the scoreboard had the Pies on 12.7.79, a respectable 63.16% in terms of goal kicking ratio. Meanwhile, the Roos’ 18.2.110 was off the charts at 90.00% shooting accuracy. I was thinking at the same time of Melbourne’s final score only six days before, a woeful 6.15.51 or 28.57% against Collingwood’s 14.5.89
